13 NUMECA experience with EU projects NUMECA has been involved in many projects in FP4; FP5; FP6, FP7 NUMECA has initiated and coordinated several projects In FP5: TROPHY on hydroplaning simulation In FP5: QNET-CFD as a Network of Excellence In FP6: NODESIM-CFD on Non-deterministic simulations (started in November 2006) In FP6: ADCOMB-CFD project MARIE-CURIE Transfer of Knowledge (ToK) ( ) In FP7: COMBINA is a Marie-Curie IAPP project on combustion Aerodays Session 4H: SMEs: Key Actors for Innovation--- Madrid, March

14 ADCOMB-CFD Marie-Curie ToK project Excellent mechanism to increase the technological level of an SME NUMECA needed to extend its software to the simulation of combustion phenomena, but had no in-house expertise Three university groups were contacted with top level expertise TUDelft University Heidelberg University Darmstadt Post-docs from these groups spend 1 to 2 years at NUMECA in Brussels, introducing the latest models in the NUMECA software This program continues under FP7 as IAPP (Industry-Academia Partnership) --- COMBINA Aerodays Session 4H: SMEs: Key Actors for Innovation--- Madrid, March

15 History of TROPHY project NUMECA had contacts with MICHELIN, who had shown interest for our software systems The objectives of MICHELIN for hydroplaning prediction were beyond the current capabilities of the software as it required many new functionalities, such as Fluid-structure coupling for the deformation of the tire Free surface flow of the water film The interaction between these effects Complexity of the material and geometrical structure of a tire NUMECA proposed to launch an EU project with these objectives, as they represented high level technological and innovative challenges Aerodays Session 4H: SMEs: Key Actors for Innovation--- Madrid, March

16 History of TROPHY project Once the consortium is established the proposal has to be written EU proposals are very heavy to write and require, in addition to the technical content, attention to general issues such as Socio-economic impact of the project Its European dimension: why does the project require European partnership How will it contribute to the global objectives of the European program as set out in the Call A key element of the evaluation is the management of the project: deliverables, deadlines, milestones and all the actions needed to followup and guide the project Evaluation of risks and steps to be taken in case of problems Budget and level of involvement of all partners Aerodays Session 4H: SMEs: Key Actors for Innovation--- Madrid, March
