5 SECTION 1 GENERAL 1 Introduction 1.1 Objective The objective of this class programme (CP) is to give a description for type approval (TA) of couplings used for torque transmission in propulsion or auxiliary plants for ships and mobile offshore units. For a description of the Society's type approval scheme in general and further information on general conditions and procedures for obtaining the Society's type approval certificate, see class programme CP 0338 DNV GL type approval scheme. The procedures and requirements described in this CP are applicable for obtaining DNV GL TA certificate based on requirements in: DNV GL rules for classification RU SHIP Pt.4 Ch.4 Sec.4 and RU SHIP Pt.4 Ch.4 Sec.5. Section Scope This CP gives a description of the procedures and requirements related to documentation, design and type testing applicable for TA of couplings for torque transmission in propulsion or auxiliary plants. In this context couplings mean all kinds of couplings except torsionally flexible couplings. For elastic (torsional) couplings, see CP This CP does not set the design requirements to the couplings. TA is based on compliance with design requirements given in the DNV GL rules and/or other regulations and standards. The CP describes the applicable design requirements and how to document compliance with the requirements in order to obtain a TA certificate for the equipment. This includes, where relevant, technical requirements for how the type tests shall be performed. 1.3 Application TA of couplings for main propulsion and essential auxillary is regarded as mandatory for standard designs, however special or new designs may be applied based on a case by case approval and exposed to a set of tests deviating from the requirements of this TA procedure. A TA certificate in accordance with this CP will confirm compliance with the requirements in the DNV GL rules as specified in [1.1]. The TA certificate will not confirm compliance with requirements in other parts of the rules. In case additional requirements in other parts of the rules shall be covered by the TA certificate, this shall be specified in the application for TA and will be stated in the TA certificate. 2 Documentation The documentation shall show all design details and materials. For coupling series where the various sizes are of similar design and the same material types are used, details for one small and one large coupling will usually be acceptable. The remaining sizes shall be covered by e.g. catalogues. The drawings shall include at least a sectional drawing of the assembled unit drawn to scale. Individual part drawings are only necessary when details as stress raisers, important dimensions and material data are not given on the assembly drawing. Class programme DNVGL-CP Edition March 2016 Page 5
6 SECTION 2 PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS 1 Material requirements Material testing shall be specified according to the rules RU SHIP Pt.2. Alternatively, other specifications such as national standards, internal standards etc. may be used as a basis for type approval. If this shall apply, the full specification shall be submitted. It shall describe all relevant requirements and the testing. Section 2 2 Design requirements The couplings will be evaluated with regard to fatigue strength and peak load strength according to the DNV GL requirements for couplings (see RU SHIP Pt.4 Ch.4 Sec.4 and RU SHIP Pt.4 Ch.4 Sec.5). 3 Test requirements The main objective of the type testing shall be to verify properties which cannot be verified by analyses and calculations with reasonable reliability. For the majority of couplings the necessary verification can be made by evaluation, hence type testing will usually not be required. However, e.g. membrane couplings may need type testing such as static stiffness check in bending and axial direction in order to verify specifications. One size in a series will usually be sufficient. Class programme DNVGL-CP Edition March 2016 Page 6
