1 Academic profiles John-Alan Pascoe Google scholar ResearchGate Orcid ID Scopus author ID Research and career statement I am fascinated by the phenomena of fatigue and fracture. I believe there is a need for creating more physical understanding in this field of research, rather than just producing more curve fits. I am currently undertaking a 2.5 year post-doc project in order to gain international experience and broaden my knowledge of the field of fracture and fatigue. I am passionate about doing research and about my topic, and enjoy sharing this passion with others through teaching and outreach. Education PhD in Aerospace Engineering, TU Delft, Cum Laude Research topic: Fatigue crack growth in adhesive bonds Supervisors: R.C. Alderliesten, R. Benedictus MSc in Aerospace Engineering,TU Delft, Cum Laude Thesis topic: Delamination of Bonded Repairs. (In collaboration with Airbus) Awarded best aerospace engineering thesis BSc in Aerospace Engineering, TU Delft, Cum Laude Work Experience Research Associate at Imperial College London Aug Present Researched improvement of damage tolerance of CFRP composites though engineering the microstructure to control failure behaviour. Developed new specimen manufacturing techniques and performed experimental studies. Assisted in organisation of 15 th European-Japanese Symposium on Composite Materials Researcher at TU Delft Oct 2016 July 2017 Performed various academic duties, including: acting as teaching assistant for online courses on fatigue and on aviation safety investigation at MSc and professional education level, assisting in the organisation of an international conference (FML Outlook, November 2017), performing fatigue crack growth experiments, and writing and reviewing papers. Also developed a practical training programme for Airbus fatigue and damage tolerance engineers. PhD Researcher at TU Delft Oct 2012 Sep 2016 Conducted independent research into fatigue cracking of adhesive bonds, based on own research proposal. Acted in a variety of teaching roles, including lecturer, and supervisor for group projects and individual research at BSc and MSc thesis level. Invited to teach at University of Bologna as guest lecturer. Presented work at several international conferences and meetings. Research largely selffunded by a personal grant. 1
2 Researcher at TU Delft May 2012 Oct 2012 Worked on the development of a software toolbox for calculations on fibre metal laminates. Fixed major bugs, adapted methods to the implementation required by the customers and translated customer requirements into instructions for the programmer. Teaching Assistant at TU Delft Oct 2011-Dec 2011 Assisted during the 1 st year materials practical, teaching 1 st year students about the tensile test behaviour of several aerospace materials. Provided technical assistance for contracted research in the structures and materials laboratory Internship at Defence Science and Technology Organisation Jan 2011 Apr 2011 (DSTO), Melbourne, Australia Documented full scale fatigue tests performed on F/A-18 centre barrels as part of the FINAL program, producing 2 full reports and documenting all available data on 2 further tests, significantly reducing the documentation back-log. Performed quantitative fractography as part of the FINAL program. Teaching Experience Guest lecturer on fatigue & damage tolerance at MSc level at University of Bologna Supervising and writing assignments for BSc and MSc final thesis research Writing assignment for, and coaching, TU Delft Design Synthesis Exercise project (3 rd year final BSc project, 10 weeks full time, 10 person teams) Supervising PRE-students (Leiden University pre-university programme for talented senior school students) emoderator & teaching assistant for online courses on fatigue, and aircraft safety investigation Academic activities Peer reviewer for: Composites Part A, International Journal of Fatigue; Fracture and damage mechanics on materials (Proceedings of FRACTURE 2014); Mechanics Research Communications, Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics Member of organising committee: 15 th European-Japanese Symposium on Composite Materials, FML Outlook, ESIS TC4 mini-symposium at ECF 21 2
