GRADUATE SCHOOL I M CONVERTING A MONASTERY INTO A MODERN REHABILITATION CENTER Graduate program BUILT ENVIRONMENT * This major is formally part of the Computer Science & Engineering Bachelor program
Graduate program Built Environment Human behavior is influenced by the built environment, and certainly in a small country like the Netherlands this environment is subject to long-term planning. This means that building engineers have a high degree of responsibility in finding the right balance between science, technology and design. However, the conflicting interests also include economic, political and environmental aspects. Countries are changing in demographic terms and in their social structures. Societies will have to provide constant stimulation for building with innovative and market-oriented concepts. One of the characteristics of the built environment is that its physical lifetime is usually longer than the economic lifetime. This means that one of the focal research areas is the development of durable, flexible, environmentally-friendly and safe buildings and installations. Within the Architecture, Building and Planning graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s degree programs Architecture, Building and Planning Construction Management and Engineering (3TU) PDEng programs Smart Energy Buildings and Cities PhD programs Design and Decision Support Systems Building Physics and Services Structural Design Architecture of the Living City and Urbanisms MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAMS Architecture, Building and Planning Interdisciplinarity is the key characteristic of the master s degree program in Architecture, Building and Planning. Based on your own discipline, you will learn to understand the problems of other disciplines. This will be important in your future career because the work of a small architectural bureau cannot be compared to that of large project developers. Through the project driven education, you will develop a design-oriented approach that is based on independent analytical ability, synthesis skills and the many opportunities offered by information technology. In addition to communication skills and presentation techniques, a scientific approach and a good measure of relativity are essentials in the design process. The four core programs are related to the four Research Programs of the Department. Therefore the latest scientific results are embedded in the education program. And students can develop themselves as a scientific researcher. Graduation options Architectural Urban Design and Engineering What characterizes Dutch design is its careful avoidance of stock-in-trade solutions and its willingness to consider radical possibilities. That is not, of course, an aim in itself. The high quality built environment that emerges from the careful consideration of issues specific to a situation requires an innovative attitude. Moreover, this high quality built environment does not just serve a specific group of interested users but has to serve humanity and its environment as a whole. To achieve this, the educational and research programs, clustered under the title Architecture of The Living City, have become increasingly integrated. We look at how design at different scales from technological product, the architectural object, all the way to the urban assembly can support and inform each other. With regard to the design of the built environment in the Netherlands, with its extraordinarily high population density and a dear love of its distinctive landscape, it is a real challenge to find the right balance between good science, adequate technology and properly responsive design. This core program is about finding the right fit between economic, social, political and environmental demands. The building industry needs to come up with innovative answers that can help the markets and governments move towards an appropriate model for future development without throwing out the wealth that we have built up. Structural Design The core program Structural Design is based on five core courses, several specialization electives and some free electives. The graduation project is filled in over the last three quartiles of the second master year. The core courses focus on knowledge on and application of structural materials as well as on several
I M CONVERTING A MONASTERY INTO A MODERN REHABILITATION CENTER GABRIELA KOZIEL Master s degree student, Architecture, Building and Planning I like to find a new purpose for abandoned buildings, giving them a place in today s society. I m designing a plan to turn a monastery into a care center for people with technology addiction, such as gaming, smartphones, and online shopping. The chapel will become a conservatory, a place to relax, filled with plants. I am happy about the quality of education at TU/e, and the smart, flexible way the programs are designed. The small faculty makes it easy to get to know fellow students and professors. For EU citizens, studying here is affordable, and the Dutch speak English very well. I m glad to be financially independent thanks to a part-time job and funding from the Dutch government. methods to solve mechanical problems. Structural design related courses as well as projects are part of the specialization electives. The projects can be divided in design projects (large span structures as well as high rise buildings) and in research projects (experimental research as well as numerical research). The courses enable the student to specify and acquire individual knowledge and competences within the field of structural design. Within the electives group two special courses are introduced, among others, focusing on the construction technology of buildings. When an extra project is carried out successfully then the certificate Construction Technology is obtained. At last, the graduation project can be carried out within the field of innovative structural design, the field of applied mechanics and the field of structural material related subjects. And, of course on combinations of these. Urban Systems & Real Estate The core program Urban Systems & Real Estate (US&RE) deals with teaching and research in the field of real estate management and development; planning, development and management of cities; and developing systems to support designers and decision makers. The core program focuses on the functioning of cities including the local housing market, residential neighbourhoods, shopping malls, urban green spaces, offices, et cetera, and transportation networks to connect all these components. In order to investigate how people live, work, shop, recreate and move around in cities, tools and models are developed to simulate and predict people s activities and travel in the city. Such tools can be used to assess the likely effects of policy measures which may aim at making cities smarter, improving the quality of life in cities, reducing energy use and minimizing exposure to noise and air pollution. The focus on smart mobility and energy, jointly with ICT implies the combination of expertise to contribute to the development of smart cities. Related professions are real estate manager, real estate developer, urban planner, transportation planner, researcher, spatial policy maker, building information technologist, expert in design and decision support systems, and process expert in large urban projects. Building Physics and Services The core program Building Physics and Services covers a wide range of interdisciplinary research topics connected to building physics and building services. The aim is to acquire new knowledge and integrate and develop design methods that lead to a sustainable, healthy, comfortable and productive indoor and outdoor environment. The focus of attention is on physical aspects and processes such as heat and moisture transfer in building constructions, indoor air quality, lighting, acoustics, heating, ventilation, airconditioning and materials. BPS has a well-equipped
laboratory and qualified technical staff. Research is carried out in the laboratory as well as in real life situations. The basic facilities allow for a wide range of experiments in all the aspects of building mentioned. The computing power laboratory also provides advanced simulation software like Fluent, ESP-r, Dirac, Radiance and COMSOL. Construction Management and Engineering (CME) The increasingly dynamic complexity of construction and, consequently, the changing perception of interests and values have initiated the development of a new program in the domain area between construction engineering and scientific management and economics. This master s degree program is both process and organization oriented, with a special focus on energy technology, mobility and information management. The specialization of CME at TU/e consists of Construction Management & Urban Development. CMUD is a scientific Master that focuses on the societal and scientific analysis of real world problems in which two domains of science are combined: (urban) building sciences plus management and innovation sciences. The major TU/e departments - the Department of the Built Environment, and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) - support the education and research. Both departments combine their distinctive research-driven and subjectoriented approach of traditional engineering education in this master s degree program. The two-year degree program has a clear scientific signature profile and strong involvement in the research activities of staff members and PhD researchers. 3TU master s degree program The three leading universities of technology in the Netherlands - Eindhoven University of Technology, Delft University of Technology and the University of Twente - have joined forces in the 3TU.Federation. Together they offer multiple master s degree programs, including: CME. CME at TU/e focuses on Construction Management & Urban Development (CMUD). The TU/e Department of the Built Environment, and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences are supporting the education and research of this interdisciplinary master s degree program. As a student you are assured of the best education in this field. You will be taught by the very best lecturers education has to offer. For all master s degree programs Study possibilities: Full-time Degree: Master of Science Language: English Times of entry: September and February Duration: 2 years (120 ECTS) Graduation options The graduation project is executed on the cross of the two aforementioned scientific domains. Within this cross section students can choose from a list of topics that are strongly related to on-going research projects in both departments: Process engineering: When cities or urban districts are to be developed or redeveloped, complex decision-making and information processes are needed in order to bring shareholders and stakeholders together. Developing models for negotiation, data management, simulation of expected results and process governance are the focus of these graduation projects. Business engineering: Cities and urban districts are considered and approached in terms of entrepreneurial entities: profit and non-profit companies. In the individual graduation projects, the subjects are value features, exploitation possibilities, management and financing concepts.
I M BUILDING A HOME FOR AGING PRISONERS YIJIAN LU Master s degree student, Architecture, Building and Planning The number of aging prisoners is rising but there is no special place for them to go. I m designing a prison facility that will house elderly inmates who need daily care and ex-prisoners who need to reintegrate into society. This building will improve their health and quality of life. What I like best about studying at TU/e is the high quality of education and the excellent sports facilities on campus. After graduation, I aim to do an internship at one of the Dutch architecture firms, known for their excellent reputations. PDEng PROGRAM Smart Energy Buildings and Cities Following your master s graduation, you can continue on to the PDEng program Smart Energy Buildings and Cities of the Built Environment graduate program. High-tech industry needs experienced technological designers able to design complex new products and processes. A master s degree may well give you the requisite theoretical knowledge but you still lack sufficient practical experience. A PDEng program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The Smart Energy Buildings and Cities program offers a course focusing on practically oriented design cases: two in the first year and one major industry assignment in the second year. The Smart Energy Buildings and Cities program trains MSc graduates to become a technological designer, capable of integrating relevant knowledge in an integral design process into a dedicated, Smart Energy system for the built environment. Based on his specialty, the technological designer can contribute to the development of: Intelligent and energy-efficient building components and/or Building concepts aimed at the intelligent use of the least possible energy and/or Intelligent networks aimed at matching the supply and demand of energy. Study possibilities: Full-time Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering Language: English Entry: September 2015, January 2016 For September 2015: May June, for January 2016: June-August Duration: 2 years The PDEng programs are coordinated in the 3TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006.
PhD PROGRAMS Following your master s degree or PDEng program, you can apply to do a PhD within the Built Environment graduate program. Several PhDs combine this with a part-time job as a teacher. During the PhD you will develop over a period of four years into an independent researcher. You will undertake a study within the domain of Built Environment under the supervision of a professor, and complete the process with a dissertation. You will write scientific papers, present results at conferences and take part in seminars as well as undertake some teaching. In addition, there are many possibilities to further your development, for instance through courses and training geared to personal development and through additional scientific schooling. Some TU/e PhD students are employed by the university, which means that you receive a salary during your PhD program. You are also entitled to attractive secondary employment benefits. Other PhDs are employed by a school or educational institute and do their PhD part-time. When you complete your program with a dissertation and gain your doctorate, your career prospects will be good, both in science or industry.
