1 EXPLAINING THE PROJECT CONCEPT OF PROJECT 08 BUILDING A SETTLEMENT: PROJECT 08 PROJECT GOAL The main goal for this project is for students to understand the human impact on the environment. Along the way they learn about the role of technology in impacting the environment, long distance impacts, and negative and positive impacts made by humans. MAIN FINAL PRODUCT At the end of the project, students should have a some form of report describing the environmental impact of their post-zombie outbreak settlement. They should describe the impact the settlement has on other locations, the technologies that could contribute to the impact on the environment, and the positive and negative impacts of the settlement. This report is the second part of planning the basic design of the settlement. PROJECT OPTIONS There are many ways that students could present this information. You may want to manage one format for all students or allow students to choose their format. As long as they meet the content requirements of the rubric, they will be showing their understanding of the standards. The following are just a few possible ways students could complete this project: Formal written report Oral presentation Poster Persuasive letter Video recording Audio recording There are many other ways. I find that students can be very engaged when choosing their own style every now and then.

2 BUILDING A SETTLEMENT: IMPACT SETTLEMENT DESIGN REPORT 02 BUILDING A SETTLEMENT: PROJECT 08 Just because the zombie outbreak has caused us to rebuild our world, doesn t mean we can ignore our environmental impact. In fact, our knowledge of human-environment interaction and our need to rebuild settlements gives us a great chance to focus on sustainability from the start. You ll learn how to analyze the long distance impact of your settlement, understand the role of technology in impacting the environment, and explain the positive and negative environmental impact of your settlement. DRIVING QUESTION How does my survivor settlement impact the environment? WHAT YOU LL PRODUCE You ll finalize your report explaining the factors that will help your settlement succeed. Or, is this settlement going to survive long term? Check with your teacher to see what options you have for your report. YOUR REPORT WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: Descriptions of the impact your settlement will have on other locations. Explanations of the technologies that could expand your impact on the environment. An analysis of the positive and negative impacts your settlement has on the environment. After this report, you ll have a full sustainability report of your settlement. Then it s time to make a future plan and make sure your settlement can withstand all future challenges.

3 PLANNING THE SETTLEMENT: IMPACTS OUTLINE OF PROJECT 08 BUILDING A SETTLEMENT: PROJECT 08 Just because the zombie outbreak has caused us to rebuild our world, doesn t mean we can ignore our environmental impact. In fact, our knowledge of human-environment interaction and our need to rebuild settlements gives us a great chance to focus on sustainability from the start. This is the second of two projects in the settlement report. After this project, students will have completed plans for designing their settlement. The next projects are around long-term plans for the survival of their settlement. FINAL PROJECT TASK Students will need to create a report examining the environmental impact of their settlement. DRIVING QUESTION How does my survivor settlement impact the environment? STUDENT LEARNING 1. Understand how to humans impact the environment over distances. 2. Positive Human Impact NATIONAL STANDARDS In the forthcoming 4th issue of Dead Reckon, characters work together to design their settlement. This project uses human-environment interaction concepts to help plan a sustainable settlement for survivors. This represents the final project students are asked to do. Or, is this settlement going to survive long term? Through this project, students will be expected to learn these skills. You may choose to do all of the lessons, and then the project. 5 LESSON 1 - HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION REVIEWING HOW HUMANS INTERACT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT BUILDING A SETTLEMENT: PROJECT 08 - LESSON 01 This lesson gives students a chance to review human-environment interaction before taking those concepts deeper in the next lessons. In this lesson, students apply human-environment interaction concepts to the zombie outbreak. The next day s lesson will look at how humans affect the environment over a long distance. MATERIALS NEEDED HEI Poster Directions Exit Ticket TIME NEEDED One class period. COPY INSTRUCTIONS Print one exit ticket for each student. Print a set of poster directions for each group. Groups will each examine a piece of technology and try to consider how it has affected the environment. The next day s lesson will look at the positive effects humans can have on the environment.
