1 Peter Max Style Image For this assignment, you will be creating images in the style of Peter Max, a contemporary artist who is known for his brightly colored posters from the 1970 s. Although Peter Max has evolved as an artist, his stylized images that included cosmic imagery and bright gradients remain as his most popular art. You will be creating two Peter Max style images. The first image will be a directed image and the second image will be using one of your images from your digital file cabinet. 1. Open one of the images (from the teacher webpage) in Photoshop. 2. Use the magic eraser to begin erasing the background. Set the tolerance and other magic eraser options as above. 3. If you have more than one person in the image that you selected, you may erase the other person(s) if you wish. Use the magic eraser to erase major chunks of the background. Then use your marquee (select) tool to get rid of the rest of the background. Use the magnifying glass tool to get up close to the face/hair so that it doesn t look distorted if you accidentally erase too much.

2 4. When the background is totally erased, go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate Your image will become a grayscale image with no color. 5. Now go to Filter>Sketch>Stamp Set the Options for the Stamp filter. Depending on the image you have selected, you may have to use different setting than the ones below. Experiment to see what looks best. You are aiming for an image that has the major features, but not so many details. (see below) Your image will now be simplified and have color.

3 6. Use the magic wand to select the face. Then open the color picker and choose a color for the face. It can be any color, just make sure it is a light, bright color. 7. Use the paint bucket to fill the face with the color you have selected. Use the magic wand to select the white part of the eyes. Fill in this part with either white or another light color. Leave everything else black.

4 8. Now you are going to use the gradient tool to fill in the background with a gradient color. Select the gradient tool (it is paired with the paint bucket tool) 9. When the gradient tool is selected, you ll see the options for this tool. If you double click on the gradient, you can change the colors. When the Gradient editor opens, you can click on the color stops to change the beginning and ending colors of the gradient. Find an interesting combination of colors don t use black or dark colors. Remember, you are emulating the style of Peter Max so you need to use bright colors. 10. Create a new layer and use the gradient tool by putting the cursor at the top of the screen and dragging straight down. A color gradient will fill the screen (undo if you don t like it and try again).

5 11. Move the gradient layer behind the image layer. 12. Now you re going to add some words to make this look more like a poster. Use the text tool and type in a word somewhere on the screen. Don t worry, you can change the color and the size later. 13. Make sure that the character window is open (Window>Character). Using the move tool, select the word and make the size larger by dragging on the handles around the text. You want the word to be large. You can change the font by using the character window. 14. You re going to add a gradient to the word. To do this, select the word layer and then go to Layer>Rasterize>Type. Once you rasterize the type, you won t be able to change the font or change the spelling of the word it becomes an image, not text.

6 15. Use the magic wand tool to select the word. Then use the gradient tool to fill in the word with a gradient. Experiment with color and choose a different set of colors for the gradient. Pick something that is different from the background and yet goes with the face color. When you use the gradient tool, drag the cursor horizontal instead of vertical.

7 16. Add a stroke the word. Use a complementary color do not use black. Make the stroke about 3 pixels. 17. Use the text tool to type another word. Rasterize the type and then fill in the word with a different gradient combination. Add a stroke to the word. 18. Now rotate the word so that it is vertical instead of horizontal. Move the face layer so that it is at the top of the layer stack and the face is somewhat partially overlapping the word(s). Save the image as yourname.petermax1 and put it in the teacher drop box.

8 Image 2 For your second image in the style of Peter Max, use one of your images but this time, make a more cosmic Peter Max image. Use a person in your image but also use stars, planets, etc. to emulate the cosmic style of Peter Max. MAKE SURE YOU USE GRADIENTS IN YOUR IMAGE and outline things. Use bright colors. You do not have to use words in this image. When done, save the image as yourname.petermax2 and put in the teacher drop box. Peter Max cosmic image
