STUDIO e PROJECTS Page 3 of 5 Sewing Sew with a scant ¼" seam allowance. Sew with right sides together (RST). Press seams as indicated by arrows. Adding the First Block Border 1. Pin and sew two 1" x 7 ½" Pink Texture rectangles to opposite sides of a 7 ½" fussy cut panel square. Pin and sew two 1" x 8 ½" Pink Texture rectangles to the top and bottom of the square. Repeat with four more fussy cut squares, for a total of five squares bordered with the Pink Texture. 2. Repeat with the 1" Blue Texture rectangles and four more fussy cut squares (Dia. A). The blocks should measure 8 ½" x 8 ½". Making and Adding the Checkerboard Block Borders 3. Sew one 2 ½" x wof Yellow Check strip to one 2 ½" x wof Pink Texture strip lengthwise. Press seam as shown. Square one end and cut into 16-2 ½" segments. Repeat to make a total of 50-2 ½" x 4 ½" segments. 4. Repeat with the 2 ½" x wof Geen Check and 2 ½" x wof Blue Texture strips to make 40 segments (Dia. B). 5. Sew two segments together on the short sides to make a row of four squares 2 ½" x 8 ½". Make 10 sets of Yellow/Pink, and eight sets of Green/Blue. Sew three segments together on the short sides to make a row of six squares 2 ½" x 12 ½". Make 10 sets of Yellow/Pink and eight sets of Green/Blue (Dia. C). (C) 6. Pin and sew the Yellow/Pink four square rows to the sides, and Make 10 Make 10 the six square rows to the top and bottom of the blocks with the Pink borders. Making and Adding the Outside Block Borders STUDIO e PROJECTS Page 4 of 5 7. Pin and sew two 2 ½" x 12 ½" Blue Texture rectangles to the sides of a Yellow/Pink bordered block. Pin and sew two 2 ½" x 16 ½" Blue Texture rectangles to the top and bottom of the block. Repeat for the remaining four blocks. 8. Pin and sew two 2 ½" Pink Animal Print rectangles to the top and bottom of a Green/Blue bordered block. Pin and sew two 2 ½" x 16 ½" Pink Animal Print rectangles to the sides of the block. Repeat for the remaining three blocks (Dia. E). The blocks should measure 16 ½" x 16 ½". (E) Make 5 Piecing the Center 9. The center will be put together in rows. Arrange the blocks as shown, with the four Pink Animal Print bordered blocks centered on the outside, and the Texture-Blue bordered blocks in the corners and center. 10. Sew together in rows. (F) 11. Sew the rows together, nesting the seams (Dia. F). The quilt center should measure 48 ½" x 48 ½".
STUDIO e PROJECTS Page 5 of 5 Adding the Quilt Borders Inside Border 12. Trim selvages from the border strips. Sew the five-1 ½" Green Texture strips together on the short ends to make one continuous strip. Cut into four 48 ½" long segments. Pin and sew two strips to the sides of the center. Sew the 1 ½" Yellow Check squares on the ends of the remaining two strips. Pin and sew these strips to the top and bottom (Dia. G). The top should now measure 50 ½" x 50 ½". Outside Border 13. Pin and sew the two fussy cut Pink Stripe strips to the sides of the top. Sew the 5 ½" Pink Tonal squares to the short ends of the two fussy cut Green Stripe strips. Pin and sew to the top and bottom (Dia. G). The finished quilt top should measure 60 ½" x 60 ½". (G) Finishing Quilting 14. Remove selvages from the backing fabric. Piece back by cutting the 4 yards into two pieces 40 ½" x 72". Sew together to make one piece approximately 80 ½" x 72". 15. Press back and front well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (wrong side down), and baste well. 16. Either hand or machine quilt according to personal preference. Quilt in the ditch between the rows, and along a grid, or use overall free motion quilting. Trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete. Binding 17. Use the seven 2 ½" strips (Blue Texture) for the binding. Cut the ends at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make one piece of binding approximately 280 inches long. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together, turn the folded edge to the back and hand stitch in place. 2012 Studio e Fabrics
