- 9 - ANSI/ISA-5.-009 Inroducion (informaive) () This inroducion, as well as any foonoes, endnoes, and informaive annexes, is included for informaion purposes and as background on he evoluion of his sandard and no as a normaive par of ANSI/ISA-5.-009. () The insrumenaion symbolism and idenificaion sysems described in his sandard accommodae advances in echnology and reflec he collecive indusrial experience gained since he original ISA Recommended Pracice RP-5., published in 949, was revised, affirmed, and subsequenly published as ANSI/ISA-5.-984, and hen reaffirmed in 99. (3) This 009 version aemps o srenghen his sandard in is role as a communicaion ool in all indusries ha depend on measuremen and conrol sysems o operae and safeguard heir manufacuring processes, machines, and oher equipmen. Communicaion presupposes and is faciliaed by a common language. This 009 version of he sandard coninues o build on he foundaion for ha common language. (4) When inegraed ino a sysem, he designaions and symbols presened here form a dedicaed language ha communicaes conceps, facs, inen, insrucions, and knowledge abou measuremen and conrol sysems in all indusries. (5) The 949 recommended pracice and he 984 sandard were published as non-mandaory raher han as mandaory consensus documens. As such, hey had many of he srenghs and he weaknesses of such sandards. Their primary srengh was ha hey could be used in widespread, inerdisciplinary ways. Their main weakness was ha hey were no specific enough, in some cases, o saisfy he special requiremens of paricular ineres groups. (6) This revision is published as a consensus sandard and conains boh mandaory and non-mandaory saemens ha have been reviewed and approved by a large group of praciioners in he field of insrumenaion and conrol. This group was well versed in he use of idenificaion and symbol sysems as a means of communicaing he inen of measuremen and conrol sysems o all ha need such informaion. I is hoped ha he consensus reached by his group regarding wha is mandaory and wha is no will enhance he srenghs and lessen he weaknesses of he previous issues. (7) Versions of his sandard have been in use for more han fify years, and mos of he idenificaion leer and symbol meanings or definiions ha were conained in ISA-RP5.-949 and ISA-5.-984 (R 99), have aken on a proprieary naure and have become acceped indusry pracice and assumed o be mandaory. The meanings and definiions of new symbols will be mandaory. This acion is being aken in response o quesions and commens ha occur frequenly because of unclear definiions. (8) Mandaory definiions or meanings for leers used in idenificaion and for symbols used in graphic depicion of measuremen and conrol devices and funcions are given. Mandaory minimum symbol dimensions are given. Informaive idenificaion and graphic symbol guidelines include alernae idenificaion and symbol definiions and usage mehods. Consisency is he one crierion ha should govern he selecion and applicaion of idenificaion and graphic schemes. (9) This sandard has been viewed in he pas as being oriened o he oil and chemical process indusries. This percepion, while no inended, resuled from he fac ha people who wroe he original and previous revisions were mainly working in hose indusries. I is he inen of he ISA5 commiee ha ISA Technical Repors will be used o address his ype of problem. I is hoped ha he echnical repor forma will be specific enough o saisfy he special requiremens of paricular ineres groups by providing examples and guidelines for use of he idenificaion and symbolizaion mehods for specific indusries. These indusries include, bu are no limied o, meal refining, power generaion, pulp and paper, and discree pars manufacuring. The echnical repor forma presens he bes approach for making his sandard applicable o indusries ha may have many usages and acceped pracices ha are no used in

ANSI/ISA-5.-009-0 - he process indusries. (0) The exensive examples in previous versions of his sandard ha illusraed idenificaion and symbolizaion definiions and mehods have been removed and will be moved o echnical repors ha will be prepared afer publicaion of his revised sandard. () The symbols and idenificaion mehods conained in his sandard have evolved by he consensus mehod and are inended for wide applicaion hroughou all indusries. The symbols and designaions are used as concepualizing aids, as design ools, as eaching devices, and as a concise and specific means of communicaion in all ypes and kinds of echnical, engineering, procuremen, consrucion, and mainenance documens, and no jus piping and insrumenaion diagrams (P&IDs). () Previous versions of his sandard have been flexible enough o serve all of he uses jus described, and i mus coninue o do so ino he fuure. To his end, his revision clarifies he definiions of symbols, idenificaion, and definiions for conceps ha were previously described, such as, for example, shared display/conrol, disribued conrol, and programmable conrol. I also adds definiions for new symbols required for funcional diagramming of insrumens and simple elecrical circui diagrams. (3) This revision exensively changes he forma of ANSI/ISA-5.-984 (R 99). Clauses,, and 3 are essenially he same as previously wrien wih some addiions and modificaions. Clauses 4, 5 and 6 and informaive Annexes A and B are new or exensively revised. (4) Clause 4, Idenificaion leer ables, was previously Clause 5, Tables. I is almos he same as he previous version and deals only wih Table 4., Idenificaion leers, which was previously Table, Idenificaion leers. (5) Clause 5, Graphic symbol ables, is a new clause ha conains new symbols and he symbols ha were previously in Clause 6, Drawings, presened in a able forma ha includes ex describing he applicaion of he symbols bu no examples of heir use. (6) Clause 6, Graphic symbol dimension ables, is a new clause ha esablishes minimum mandaory dimensions for he symbols shown in he ables in Clause 5 when used in he preparaion of full-size engineering drawings. (7) Annex A, Idenificaion sysem guidelines (Informaive), was previously Clause 4, Ouline of he Idenificaion Sysem, and presens he mos commonly used insrumenaion and funcion idenificaion mehods. Included are expanded Allowable loop and funcion leer combinaion ables and added Allowable loop leer scheme ables. (8) Annex B, Graphic symbol guidelines (Informaive), is a new informaive clause ha replaces he examples formerly given in Clause 6, Drawings, o provide some limied assisance in he applicaion of he symbols in Clause 5. (9) Definiions for idenificaion leers and symbols are now mandaory o reduce he confusion caused by giving meanings o idenificaion and symbols no inended by his sandard. A he same ime, he number of symbology and agging bubbles required o depic a measuremen or conrol scheme was allowed o range from everyhing mus be shown o he minimum required o convey he insrumenaion and funcionaliy required. Guidelines are inended o aid in he applicaion of idenificaion and symbology and o include some of he known mehods as alernae usages. (0) The meanings of shared display, shared conrol, and programmable logic conrol have been clarified and expanded because of changes in echnology and usage since heir incepion in ISA-5.3-983, Graphic Symbols for Disribued Conrol/Shared Display Insrumenaion, Logic and Compuer Sysems. The commonly assumed meanings of circle-in-square as disribued conrol sysem (DCS) funcions and of diamond-in-square as programmable logic conroller (PLC) funcions are no longer

- - ANSI/ISA-5.-009 accurae because hey no longer reflec he currenly accepable meanings. DCSs and PLCs can boh perform coninuous and binary conrol funcions. The same funcions are performed by personal compuers (PC) and by fieldbus and devicebus devices. Boh circle-in-square and diamond-in-square symbols are classified as shared display, shared conrol. Circle-in-square will depic eiher (a) primary conrol sysem choice or (b) basic process conrol sysem (BPCS). Diamond-in-square will depic eiher (a) alernae conrol sysem choice or (b) safey insrumened sysem (SIS). Users who coninue o use he symbols as in he pas should change o he revised meanings as soon as possible. () This revision uses, wih permission, informaion from he excellen SAMA (Scienific Apparaus Makers Associaion) PMC.-98, Funcional Diagramming of Insrumen and Conrol Sysems, a documen sill used by many conrol sysem engineers and designers. SAMA symbols and descripions for funcional diagramming of Insrumens and conrol loops and for signal processing symbols and funcion blocks were adaped in ANSI/ISA-5.-984 (R 99) for use in loop schemaic diagrams. This revision adds he SAMA symbols and descripions for logic funcion enclosures for use in funcional diagrams, logic diagrams, and applicaion sofware funcions. Guidelines for a limied number of applicaions of he symbols will be found in Annex B, Graphic symbol sysem guidelines (Informaive). () The binary line symbols, which were inroduced in ANSI/ISA-5.-984 (R 99) o aid he bach processing indusries, have been removed because of heir general lack of use and accepance and he many objecions o heir use. If heir use is desired wihin he bach processing indusries, an ISA Technical Repor could be produced o cover his unique need. (3) The many examples conained in Clause 6 of ANSI/ISA-5.-984 (R 99) have been reduced in number and are now locaed in Annex B. I is hoped ha ISA Technical Repors will be prepared based on his sandard o cover he applicaion of idenificaion and symbolizaion mehods and pracices in he deail required by users in hose many indusries beyond he process indusries, who depend on his sandard in heir daily work. (4) The ISA5 commiee and ISA5. subcommiee recognize and deeply appreciae he work of previous ISA5. subcommiees, and have ried o rea heir work wih he grea respec i deserves. (5) ISA5 and ISA5. also acknowledge he work done by he pas ISA5. and ISA5.3 subcommiees in developing ISA-5.-976 (R99), "Binary Logic Diagrams for Process Operaions," and ISA-5.3-983, "Graphic Symbols for Disribued Conrol/Shared Display Insrumenaion, Logic and Compuer Sysems." The key elemens of ISA-5.3-983 were incorporaed in ANSI/ISA-5.-984 (R 99) and have been expanded in his revision. The key elemens of ISA-5.-976 are incorporaed and inegraed wih he logic symbols from SAMA PMC.-98 for symbolizing and describing binary funcions. Guidelines for he applicaion of he binary sysem can be found in Annex B (Informaive), Graphic symbol sysem guidelines.
