DESCRPTN The SP5301 is a half-duplex Universal Serial Bus (USB) differenial raceiver ha inerfaces wih he HDL Serial nerface Engine (SE) from he USB developer's conference. The SP5301 is designed o allow digial logic o communicae wih he physical layer of he Universal Bus. The USB is a cable bus ha suppors daa exchange beween a hos compuer and a wide range of peripherals. Aached peripherals share USB bandwidh hrough a hos scheduled oken based proocol. The USB allows peripherals o be aached, configured, used, and deached while he hos and oher peripherals are in operaion. This is referred o as dynamic, or ho, aachmen and removal. USB aribues include lower coss, ho plug-and-play wih dynamic aach-deach capabiliies, ease of design and use, muliple peripherals, guaraneed laency, and guaraneed bandwidh. The USB is specified o be an indusry sandard exeion o he PC archiecure wih a focus on Compuer Telephony negraion (CT), coumer, and produciviy applicaio. The archiecure of he USB proocol can ease he expaion of PC peripherals, provide a low-cos soluion ha suppors ranfer raes up o 12Mbps, and can fully suppor real-ime daa for voice, audio, and compressed video. The USB proocol can provide proocol flexibiliy for mixed-mode isochronous daa rafers and asynchrounous messaging. Guaraneed bandwidh and low laencies are appropriae for many elephony and audio applicaio. A 12Mbps bus covers he mid-speed and low-speed daa ranges. Typically, mid-speed daa ypes are isochronous and low-speed daa comes from ineracive devices. sochronous communicaion can only be used by full speed devices. THERY F PERATN The USB proocol can suppor muliple connecio for up o 127 physical devices composed of many diverse funcio. This makes he SP5301 an ideal soluion for mulidrop applicaio. This lower proocol overhead resuls in high bus uilizaion. An isochronous workload may uilize he enire USB bus bandwidh. The USB proocol reflecs a robus capabiliy of dynamic ierion and removal of devices idenified in user perceived real-ime. This PC plug and play qualiy preserves he markeable synergy wih he PC indusry, being a simple proocol o implemen and inegrae ino exising operaing sysems. The SP5301 conai a differenial driver and a differenial receiver in a half-duplex configuraion. The driver is enabled by he E pin. f E is assered LW, he driver is acive and he and pi drive USB signals. The differenial receiver is also conrolled by he E pin. f E is HGH, while SUSPEND is LW, he receiver is acive and he driver is in ri-sae. n his receive mode, he and pi are now receiving USB signals. The ypical driver oupu volage swing for and of he SP5301 will be less han +0.3 for he LW sae and greaer han +2.8 for he HGH sae. The SP5301 is a USB differenial inerface wih very high receiver inpu seiiviy. This makes daa virually immune o noise on he USB pipeline. The SP5301 incorporaes a receive error circui. This error circui oupus CMS signals on he receive error pin (RERR) and he receive single ended zero pin (RSE0) under specific condiio from he USB bus. When E is assered LW, i enables he USB driver o rami daa on he and oupu pi. The receive error circui is disabled in his condiion and boh RERR and RSE0 are forced low. The receive error circui is acivaed in receive mode when E is HGH. The receive error circui will signal an error sae when boh and are HGH by forcing RERR HGH. The receiver error circui will signal a single ended zero when boh and are LW by forcing RSE0 HGH. A single ended zero is a valid sae and is used o signal an end of packe (EP) in signal ramission. (CAUTN: Since boh RERR and RSE0 are CMS oupus, care mus be aken o eure ha RERR and RSE0 are NT conneced o CC or GND.) The SP5301 has a suspend inpu pin (SUSPND) which enables a low power sae while he USB bus is inacive. When SUSPND is assered HGH or SP5301 is in rami mode (E is LW), he receive daa pin (RC) will be forced LW. The SP5301 can rami and receive serial daa a boh full speed, 12Mbps, and a low speed, 1.5Mbps, daa raes. A full speed, he acive supply curren of he SP5301 is 6mA. n he suspend sae, he supply curren is ypically 20nA. Full speed USB applicaio include SDN, PBX, PTS, sampled analog devices, audio, priners, and elephony desig.
