Birthday Cake Explosion Box Gift Set Designed By: Amanda Corbet July 2013 This beautiful gift set will have you all ready to give a fabulous birthday gift! The gift box is an explosion box that has a cute birthday cake in the middle and a pocket in each box side that can hold a gift card or a note. The gift bag is perfect for those slightly larger gifts, and the matching greeting card has you ready for your next birthday party!
Instructions Step 1 Cut one 4 x 4 piece of Summer Starfruit card stock. This will be your box bottom. Cut four 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 pieces of Summer Starfruit card stock. These will be your box sides. Score the card stock as shown below. Use Paper Snips to trim in the locations indicated with the red lines. Apply Sticky Strip in the location indicated with the blue line. Fold on all the score lines. 3/4 4-1/2 5-1/2 5 Step 2 Trim the top and bottom corners of the large side tabs on the box sides with the 3/16 Corner punch (Step 2a). Cut four 1-1/2 x 5 pieces of Midnight Muse card stock. Cut four 1 x 5 pieces of Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper (DSP). Adhere the DSP onto the Midnight Muse card stock strips with Anywhere Glue Stick. Adhere one strip in the center of each box side (Step 2b). Step 2a Step 2b
Step 3 Remove the Sticky Strip liner from the small tab on one box side. Adhere the tab onto one side of the box bottom (Step 3a). Repeat with the three remaining box sides (Step 3b). Step 3a Step 3b Step 4 Cut two 3-7/8 x 3-7/8 pieces of Midnight Muse DSP. Cut two 3-3/4 x 3-3/4 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. Use Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere each DSP piece onto a Midnight Muse piece. Flip over your box bottom so you re looking at the inside. Adhere one Midnight Muse/DSP layer onto the bottom of your box (Step 4). Set the other Midnight Muse/DSP piece aside. Step 4 Step 5 Cut four 3-1/2 x 4-3/4 pieces of Midnight Muse card stock. Cut four 3-1/2 x 4-1/2 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. These will make your card pockets. Place one of your DSP pieces on your Simply Scored with the 3-1/4 end at the top. Score at ½ and 2-3/4. Fold one ½ tab down. Fold the other ½ tab going in the opposite direction (Step 5a). Apply approximately a 2 long piece of Sticky Strip in the center of one of the ½ wide tabs and on each side as shown (Step 5b).
Step 5a Step 5b Step 6 Remove the Sticky Strip liner from the ½ wide tab. Adhere the Midnight Muse card stock onto the DSP. Use Paper Snips to trim the DSP on the score line up to the card stock. Cut the DSP tab even with the sides of the Midnight Muse card stock (Step 6a). Fold the DSP over the Midnight Muse card stock. Fold the sides of the DSP around the Midnight Muse card stock. Remove the Sticky Strip liner on the sides and adhere the DSP onto the backside of the Midnight Muse card stock (Step 6b). Step 6a Step 6b Step 7 Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the remaining four pieces of DSP and Midnight Muse card stock. These are your gift card pockets. They could also be used as note card pockets. Apply Multipurpose Liquid Glue onto the backside of each card pocket and adhere the pockets onto the inside of each box side. Step 7
Step 8 Cut one 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 piece of Coastal Cabana card stock. With the card stock on your Simply Scored score at 1/2, 2, 4-1/2, and 6. Rotate the card stock 90 degrees and score at the same locations as before. Step 9 Trim the card stock as shown in the locations indicated with the red lines. Apply Sticky Strip in the locations indicated with the blue lines. Fold on all the score lines. Step 9 Step 10 One at a time, remove the Sticky Strip from the large corner tabs and adhere them behind the adjoining side (Step 10a, Step 10b). This forms a little box. Now remove the Sticky Strip liner from two of the bottom flaps and fold the other bottom flaps down on top of the flaps with the exposed Sticky Strip (Step 10c).
Step 10a Step 10b Step 10c Step 11 Add one stripe of the tan Epic Day This and That Washi Tape onto the very bottom of the box (Step 11a). Add one strip of the gray striped Epic Day This and That Washi Tape right above the tan Washi Tape (Step 11b). This is the bottom cake layer. Set aside adhesive side up. Step 11a Step 11b Step 12 Cut one 4-3/4 x 4-3/4 piece of Coastal Cabana card stock. With the card stock on your Simply Scored score at 1/2, 1-1/2, 3-1/4, and 4-1/4. Rotate the card stock 90 degrees and score at the same locations as before. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 on this piece. Add one strip of the tan Epic Day This and That Washi Tape into the center of the box sides. This is the middle cake layer. Set aside adhesive side up.
Step 13 Cut one 4-1/4 x 4-1/4 piece of Coastal Cabana card stock. With the card stock on your Simply Scored score at 1/2, 1-1/2, 2-3/4, and 3-3/4. Rotate the card stock 90 degrees and score at the same locations as before. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 on this piece. Add one strip of the gray striped Epic Day This and That Washi Tape into the center of the box sides. This is the top cake layer. Step 14 Remove the remaining Sticky Strip liner from the cake bottom from Step 11. Adhere this into the center of the inside of the box. Remove the remaining Sticky Strip liner from the cake middle from Step 12. Adhere this into the center of the cake bottom. Remove the remaining Sticky Strip liner from the cake top from Step 13. Adhere this into the center of the cake middle. Step 14 Step 15 Use the Small Heart punch on a scrap of Summer Starfruit card stock. Use a Stamping Sponge to sponge Tangerine Tango ink on the top of the heart as shown (Step 15a). Use Paper Snips to cut the heart in half. Cut a piece of 24 gauge wire 1 long. Apply a Glue Dot onto both sides of one end of the wire (Step 15b). Press half the heart onto the Glue Dot. Press the other half of the heart onto the other side of the wire. This is your candle flame (Step 15c). Step 15a Step 15b
Step 15c Step 16 Cut one 3/4 x 3-3/4 piece of Birthday Basics DSP. Use your Paper-Piercing Tool to begin curling the paper at one end (Step 16a). Roll the paper up tightly until you get to the other end. Apply a line of 2-Way Glue Pen on the very end of the DSP strip and adhere the end of the strip around your DSP roll (Step 16b). Apply a little glob of Multipurpose Liquid Glue onto one end of your DSP roll (Step 16c). This will be the end that gets adhered to the cake top. Insert the wire on your candle flame into the non-glued end of the DSP roll until the wire reaches the other end of the roll (Step 16d). You will see the glue bulge a little then pull the wire back just a tiny bit. You don t want the wire to stick out the bottom of the candle. Set the candle aside for two minutes or so to let the glue begin to set up. Press the glue side of the candle onto the top of the cake. Step 16a Step 16b Step 16b Step 16c
Step 17 Apply Silver Sparkle Dazzling Details onto the corners of the cake layers and around the base of the candle. This adds some sparkle and covers where the glue oozed out around the base of the candle. Set the box bottom aside to dry completely. Step 17 Step 18 Cut one 4-1/8 x 4-1/8 piece of Summer Starfruit card stock. This will be your lid top. Cut two 3-1/2 x 8-3/4 pieces of Summer Starfruit card stock. These will be your lid sides. Score as shown below. Use Paper Snips to trim in the locations indicated with the red lines. Apply Sticky Strip in the locations indicated with the blue lines. Flip the card stock over to the other side and apply Sticky Strip in the locations indicated with the green lines. Repeat with the other lid side piece. Fold on all the score lines. ½ 4-5/8 8-3/4 1-1/2 3 3-1/2 Step 18 Step 19 Remove the Sticky Strip liner from one of the 1/2 wide bottom tabs and adhere it onto the lid top. Repeat with the other lid side piece (Step 19a). Remove the Sticky Strip liner from the other 1/2 wide bottom tab and adhere it onto the lid top. Remove the Sticky Strip liner from the side tabs and adhere them inside the adjoining side piece (Step 19b). Use Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere the Midnight Muse/DSP layer remaining from Step 4 inside the box lid (Step 19c). Now remove the Sticky Strip liner from the larger tabs and fold them inside the lid and adhere the flaps onto the sides of the lid (Step 19d).
Step 19a Step 19b Step 19c Step 19d Step 20 Fold the box sides up and place the lid on the explosion box. Step 20 Step 21 Cut two 1-1/2 x 7-1/2 pieces of Midnight Muse card stock. With the 7-1/2 side against the top of your Simply Scored, score at 1-3/4 and 5-7/8. Repeat with the remaining piece. Cut two 1 x 8 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. Use Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere one of the Midnight Muse strips onto the box lid. Line up the card stock with the stripes on the box sides. Use Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere the DSP onto the Midnight Muse card stock stripe (Step 21a). Repeat to adhere the other stripe onto the box top (Step 21b). Use Paper Snips to trim the Midnight Muse card stock/dsp strips even with the bottom edge of the box lid (Step 21c).
Step 21a Step 21b Step 21c Step 22 Cut one 1 x 3 piece of Birthday Basics DSP. Cut four 1 x 4 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. Cut four 1 x 5 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. Cut four 1 x 6 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. Use the Paper-Piercing Tool and Stampin Pierce Mat to pierce a hole in the center of each 1 wide end of all the DSP strips. Step 23 Start with the 1 x 3 piece of DSP. Insert a 1/8 Mini Brad into the hole in one end. Wrap the other end around the top of the brad to make a loop and insert the brad through the other hole in the paper. Now take one of the 1 x 4 DSP strips. Insert the brad trough one of the holes in the DSP strip. Now bend the other end around and insert the brad through the hole. This piece of DSP will look like a cone. Repeat with the remaining 1 x 4 DSP strips then spread the prongs of the brad open to hold it together. Step 23
Step 24 Grab another Mini Brad and repeat with the 1 x 5 DSP strips to make the second layer of the bow (Step 24a). This time you won t have the small center loop. Now Grab another Mini Brad and repeat with the 1 x 6 DSP strips to make the third layer of the bow. Use a few Glue Dots to adhere the smallest layer inside the middle layer. Now use a few Glue Dots to adhere this layer into the largest layer of the bow (Step 24b). Use a few more Glue Dots to adhere the bow onto the lid of the box. Your explosion box is completely done! Step 24a Step 24b Step 25 Now we start on the gift bag. Take one 8-1/2 x 11 piece of Smoky Slate card stock. With the 11 side against the top of your Simply Scored, score at 2-1/2 and 8-1/2. Now rotate the card stock 90 degrees and score at 2-1/2. Repeat with a second 8-1/2 x 11 piece of Smoky Slate card stock. Step 26 Cut two 2 x 11 pieces of Birthday Basics DSP. With the 2 side against the top of your Simply Scored, score at 1. Fold on the score line. Step 27 Cut the score lines on the bottom of the Smoky Slate card stock from Step 25 as shown below. Stamp the chevrons from the Oh, Hello stamp set in Smoky Slate ink. Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere the DSP over the top edge of the card stock (Step 27a). Fold on all the score lines. Repeat with the other piece of Smoky Slate card stock and DSP. Use Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere the 2-1/2 wide side flaps on the two pieces together to form a rectangular tube (Step 27b). Step 28 Fold in two of the narrow flaps on the bottom (Step 28a). Apply Multipurpose Liquid Glue onto the flaps. Fold in one of the larger flaps (Step 28b). Apply Multipurpose Liquid Glue onto the inside of the remaining narrow flaps. Press down onto the bag bottom (Step 28c). Apply Multipurpose Liquid Glue onto the remaining flap. Press down onto the box bottom. Step 28a Step 28b Step 28c Step 29 Cut two 12 pieces of Smoky Slate 3/4 Chevron ribbon. Use the small punch on a Crop-A-Dile to punch two holes in the top band of the bag front and back. Thread the ends of the ribbon through the holes and tie the ribbon end into a knot. Repeat with the other ribbon on the other side. This makes the handles of your bag (Step 29a). Apply Silver Sparkle Dazzling Details to the inside of the dashed chevrons on the bag front (Step 29b). Set aside to dry completely. Step 29a Step 29b
Step 30 Now we start on the card. Cut one 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 piece of Midnight Muse card stock. With the 8-1/2 side against the top of your Simply Scored, score at 4-1/4. Fold on the score line. Step 31 Cut one 4 x 5-1/4 piece of Summer Starfruit card stock. Cut one 2-1/4 x 3-3/4 piece of Birthday Basics DSP. Adhere this onto the left side of the Summer Starfruit card stock. Cut one 2-3/4 x 3-3/4 piece of Birthday Basics DSP. Adhere this onto the right side of the Summer Starfruit card stock (Step 31a). Cut one 18 piece of Smoky Slate 3/4 Chevron ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the panel and tie it into a knot. Adhere this layer onto the card front with Stampin Dimensionals. Step 31 Step 32 Cut one 4 x 5-1/4 piece of Smoky Slate card stock. Stamp the chevrons from the Oh, Hello stamp set in Smoky Slate ink. Use Anywhere Glue Stick to adhere this piece onto the inside of the card. Step 32 Step 33 Stamp the greeting from the Best of Birthdays stamp set onto a scrap of Smoky Slate card stock in Midnight Muse ink. Punch out the greeting with the Extra-Large Oval punch. Use the 2 nd from smallest Ovals Framelits and run it through the Big Shot on a scrap of Coastal Cabana card stock. Use the Occasions Piercing Pack, Stampin Pierce Mat, and Paper-Piercing Tool to pierce holes around the edge of the Coastal Cabana oval. Adhere the greeting oval into the center of the Coastal Cabana oval with Anywhere Glue Stick. Adhere this onto the right side of the card front with Stampin Dimensionals. Apply Silver Sparkle Dazzling Details around the greeting oval and on the seam between the DSP pieces. Set the card aside to dry completely.
