Dayton Carvers Guild March 2017 www.daytoncarvers.com Find us on Facebook at Artistry in Wood, Dayton, OH. Please give Marshall Stearns your newsletter input at (937) 837-0728 or lstearns@erinet.com. I d tell the truth here but nobody would believe it. March Program: Architectural Woodworker John Wonderly John is an architectural woodworker who specializes in custom staircases. He combines modern technology and old world craftsmanship. This sometimes includes carving details. Carver of the Month: Bruce Henn Everyone knows Bruce. He s a talented and prolific carver, a doer in the carving world and a fun guy. Election of Officers At the March meeting we elect The President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. If you are willing to serve, please let President Joe Lehman know ASAP. Who we are. What we do. We, The Dayton Carvers Guild, are wood carving enthusiasts. Some are experts and some are beginners. All are welcome. Carvers and folks that might be interested in carving are invited to come to our meetings. At a typical meeting, we start with Show and Tell. Bring your carving, finished or just started. One of those showing something wins something like a knife or glue from a grab box. We break for coffee and cookies, and then have a program. It might be a how to demonstration or a presentation of something related to wood or carving. Artistry in Wood is a big two-day show exhibiting carving and woodworking art, selling them, selling tools and wood, plus a competition. We put on this show. If you have questions please contact Marshall Stearns at lstearns@erinet.com or (937) 837-0728. Next Dayton Carvers Guild Meeting: Tuesday, March 28 th, 2017, 7 pm at United Rehabilitations Services Building, 4710 Troy Pike (at Needmore Road), Dayton, Ohio. Meetings are at 7 pm on the 4 th Tuesday of the month except there is none in December and the October Pot Luck meetings start at 6:30 pm. Program: Architectural Woodworker John Wonderly Carver of the Month: Bruce Henn Cookie Contributors: Sandy Czajka & Barb Belcher 1

Renew Your Membership in March March is the month to pay your dues. Renewals are $10 for a single membership and $15 for family. Write your check to Dayton Carvers Guild and mail it to Barb Belcher, Dayton Carvers Guild Treasurer 6205 U.S. Rt. 40 Tipp City, OH 45371. You also may pay her at the March meeting. The roster gets updated with the membership renewals. If you had a change in your address, phone or email address, give it to Barb, too. It would be very helpful to get all renewals done in March so the roster and address files can be updated only one time. If you currently receive the newsletter by mail and would be willing to receive it by email, note that in your renewal. The email system saves work and money. The newsletter is available at The Club Website a few weeks prior to each meeting. Paper copies are mailed at the same time. If you are a new member who joined during 2016 Artistry in Wood or later, your membership dues are already paid until March of 2018. What was the February Program? Photo from Don Mertz s FACE- BOOK page It s documented here because it wasn t announced in the February newsletter. Don Mertz gave Chips Off the Old Block, a reflection of over 40 years of carving activity on a variety of carvingrelated subjects. Who was the February Member of the Month? Camera Team for Artistry in Wood Gary and Bonnie Phelps will handle the camera work for the Artistry in Wood demonstrations. Thanks, Gary and Bonnie. That s what makes this machine click. Woodcarving Illustrated will handle the rest of the demonstration work. It was artist and Dayton Carvers Guild Treasurer Barb Belcher. Should there be a new member, the only person who couldn t already know it, it s the Barb Belchers who keep the carving world trains running on track. 2

Carving is 95% the carving to the basic form with 5% is carving the final details. The details are the icing on the cake. Putting icing on a half-baked cake is a mess just as carving in the details before the foundation of the basic form is carved. That, from Don Mertz Barbara Rawlings Passes New Members We welcome Douglas and Anne Fike from Cincinnati. Raintree Woodcarvers Show & Sale It s in Muncie, Indiana on Saturday, March 25, 2017. For info contact Randy True at (765) 749-6036 or truecarving54@gmail.com. Barb was a beloved long time member of The Dayton Carvers Guild. She died on February 8, 2017 at age 84. Lowell Dunn Passes Lowell was the founder of The Miami Valley Woodcarvers. He passed away on February 19, 2017. When can you register for Artistry in Wood? Not till mid-june. Brukner Woodcarving & Art Show The 2017 Brukner Woodcarving and Art Show is coming up. This year it will be held on 8-9 April at the same location in the Miami County Fairground in Troy OH. www.bruknernaturecarvers.com New FACEBOOK Guru Jan Fader will pick up the Dayton Carvers and Artistry in Wood FACEBOOK job. A Public Address System for DCG? Don Worley opened a discussion on getting a PA system for Dayton Carvers Guild meetings. The Brukner Club has one and it works well. We tried a borrowed system for Mertz s program at the February meeting and it was nice. 3

$100 to The Affiliated Wood Carvers The Dayton Carvers Guild voted to contribute $100 to the Affiliated Wood Carvers, the group that puts on The Iowa Show. $100 to The Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup The Dayton Carvers Guild voted to contribute $100 to The Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup. It s July 19 th through the 22 nd. Get yourself there if you can. You can learn everything there is to know about bird carving in an hour or so. February Show & Tell Winner Ray Kunz had the winning ticket. He chose a Flexcut stick of Gold Polishing Compound. There was no 50/50 drawing at the February meeting. We re just going to Marion s. Why do you look like someone just ran over your cat? Join the carvers for a not halfbad meal and even better conversation at Marion s Piazza. We start about noon and it s always on the first Wednesday of the month. Our Marion s is the one at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. Want to chip carve something a little different? For ideas, the Celtic knot carvers can step into the tattoo world. Chip carvers? Try the quilting world. www.sweetdreamsquiltstudio.com is a quilting website run by a niece. She sells patterns there. If you wander around it, you ll soon be sketching ideas. If you are a Zentangler, you ll find neat Zentangleappropriate patterns too. Somebody, try some quilting patterns for carving and we ll tell about it in the newsletter. 4

The following came to DCG via Don Worley. You are invited to participate. I have substantially shortened this from the document given to us. Those prizes are very nice. Marshall 2017 CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT PROJECT by the TRIAD WOODCARVERS CLUB, WINSTON SALEM, NC The Triad Woodcarvers is planning a 2017 CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT PROJECT. The tree will have 200 hand carved ornaments. The purpose for this project is a club fundraiser but also, and just as importantly, to give back to the youth program of the Sawtooth School for Visual Arts in Winston Salem. We would like to give an opportunity to all our woodcarving friends and woodcarving clubs to participate in this program by donating a carved Christmas ornament or ornaments. INCENTIVE AWARDS will be available for carvers donating an ornament or ornaments. Carvers will be eligible to win one of the following: 1. Free weekend at an ocean front condo (sleeps 4) at Ocean Isle Beach, NC in the spring of 2018. (Value: $350) 2. Five day free tuition for any of the courses offered at the John C. Campbell Folk School in 2018. (Value: $500-650) 3. Tom Wolfe Carving. Tom is a nationally know Professional Woodcarver and a member of the CCA. (Value: Priceless) 4. Carving knife from Bear Creek Blades 5. $30 gift certificate from Steve Brown 6. $30 gift certificate from Bob Stadtlander 7. Please sign your ornaments. Your name will be put into the Incentive Awards raffle for EACH ornament you donate. Carvers can win only one Incentive Award. Winners will be announced in early December, 2017. All participating carvers/clubs will be publicized during the marketing of the tree. The Christmas Tree with the 200 ornaments will be displayed and marketed at the well- known Sawtooth School of Visual Arts during their Deck the Halls Festivity in November / December, 2017. This event is one of the highlights of the Sawtooth School and brings in thousands of visitors during this promotion and open house. With your assistance, we are anticipating a very successful project in which we will be able to give back to the community. We are hopeful that this event will also interest new carvers to join the Triad Woodcarvers. Questions should be directed to and ornaments mailed to Ray Branch 120 Bridgewood Lane Bermuda Run, North Carolina 27006 e-mail: raybranch@carolina.rr.com Telephone: 704-577-8619 5
