From Dot-C1820 Red: Cut two 3 7 8" x width-of-fabric (WOF) strips. Sub-cut twenty 3 7 8" squares. From Fun-C3851 Black: Cut one 3 7 8" x WOF strip. Sub-cut ten 3 7 8" squares. From Fun-C3851 White: Cut one 3 7 8" x WOF strip. Sub-cut ten 3 7 8" squares. From Fun-C3616 White: Cut four 3 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut forty 3 1 2" squares. From Dot-C1820 White: Cut seven 1 1 2" x WOF strips for middle borders. From Soho-White: Cut four 3 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut forty 3 1 2" squares. Cut four 3 7 8" x WOF strips. Sub-cut forty 3 7 8" squares. Cut four 12 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut ten 12 1 2" squares. From Soho-Black: Cut three 3 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut forty 3 1 2" squares. Cut six 1 1 2" x WOF strips for inner borders. From Fun-C3850 Black: Cut four 6 1 2" x length-of-fabric (LOF) strips along the stripes patterning. See the quilt photo for placement. Cut four 2 1 2" x LOF strips from the scraps for binding. For appliqués: Trace and cut the appliqué shapes from plastic template material. Using the templates, trace the required number of each piece onto the fusible web paper backing. Roughcut the shapes leaving at least 1/8" around each. Fuse the shapes to the fabric wrong side, mixing and matching leftover fabric scraps as desired. Cut out each shape on the drawn line. ~ four Ladybug Bodies ~ four Ladybug Heads ~ eighty Flower Petals (in sets of five) ~ sixteen flower centers ~ eight Short Stems ~ twelve Long Stems ~ four Tulip Centers ~ eight Tulip Sides (in sets of two) Block Construction Pinwheel Blocks 1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each 3 7 8 " Soho- White square. 2. Place the Soho-White square right sides together with a 3 7 8 " C1820 Red square. Stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. 3. Cut along the drawn line to make two half-square triangle (HST) units. Press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Make a total of forty units. (figure 1) 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make a total of twenty HST units each using 3 7 8" C3851 White squares and 3 7 8 " C3851 Black squares with the remaining marked 3 7 8 " Soho-White squares. (figure 2) 5. Following figure 3, sew together four 3 1 2 " C3616 White squares, four 3 1 2" Soho-White squares and eight HST units (four each of C1820 Red and C3851 Black). Press seams in adjacent rows in opposite directions, and press row seams open. Make a total of five pinwheel blocks. Repeat to make a total of five blocks using C3851 White HST units in place of the C3851 Black units. fig. 1 Make 40. Make 20. Make 20. fig. 2 fig. 3 Make 5. Make 5. Make 5. Make 5. Appliqué Blocks 6. Fold each 12 1 2 " Soho-White block into quarters and fingerpress a crease in both directions to mark the center. 7. To make the six flower blocks, fuse a short stem along the lower center vertical crease. On four blocks, place five petals on top of the stem and top with the flower center. On two blocks, top the stem with the tulip center and two sides. Fuse the pieces in place. 8. Place two long stems on each block, 2" from the centered short stem. Add flowers (see step 7) and fuse in place. On one
block add two additional short stemmed tulips. Make a total of three blocks with three large flowers, two blocks with two large flowers and one short tulip, and one block with three large flowers and two short-stemmed tulips. (figure 4) Make 3. 3. Make 2. 2. Make Make 1. 1. fig. 4 9. To make the four ladybug blocks, place the ladybug body in the center of a 12 1 2" Soho-White square, orienting as desired. Tuck the head just under the upper body and fuse both pieces in place. 10. To finish the appliqués, slide a piece of tear-away stabilizer under the design area. Use a zigzag, satin stitch or blanket stitch to finish the edges. Draw in two antennae and hand or machine stitch along the lines. Remove the stabilizer after stitching. 11. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 3 1 2 " Soho-Black square. Place the block on the upper left-hand corner of an appliqué block with the line positioned as shown. Stitch on the line and trim the seam allowance bottom of the quilt top. 15. Sew the 1 1 2" x WOF C1820 White middle border strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Cut two strips 1 1 2 " x 62 1 2 " and sew one to each side of the quilt top. Cut two strips 1 1 2" x 52 1 2" and sew one to the top and the other to the bottom of the quilt top. 16. From the 6 1 2 " x LOF C3850 Black outer border strips, cut two strips 6 1 2" x 64 1 2 " and sew one strip to each side of the quilt top. Cut two strips 6 1 2 " x 64 1 2". Sew one strip to the top and the other to the bottom of the quilt top, matching the print orientation. Finishing 17. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. 18. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 19. Following the Quilt Assembly Diagram, alternately lay out the appliqué and pinwheel blocks in five rows of four fig. 6 blocks each. Sew the blocks in each row together, pressing seam allowances in alternate directions for adjacent rows. 13. Sew the rows together in order, pressing seams in one direction. 14. Sew the 1 1 2" x WOF Soho-Black inner border strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Cut two strips 1 1 2 " x 60 1 2 " and sew one to each side of the quilt top.
