GV Standard Three Wall Box Installation Instruction Manual Technical experts in the design, manufacture and supply of precision engineered, architectural rooflights for residential and commercial buildings.
Three Wall Box Installation Instruction Manual 3WB-INST v Page 2 of 12 Contents Section Description Page Points to note prior to commencing installation 2-3 Installation procedure 4-12 Three Wall Box Installation Instructions Points to note prior to commencing installation: 1. The Three Wall Box should arrive on site in undamaged packaging, which includes cardboard side and glass protection and low tack tape base protection. Please inspect for damage to packaging and/or Three Wall Box and advise Glazing Vision upon receipt. 2. Enclosed within the box should contain silicone, Strips of PIR(to be cut to size), internal cover plates, External flashings, fixings, woodscrews and a number of horseshoe packers. The installation kit supplied with electrical units contains a transformer, two switches and any additional optional items selected at time of order. 3. There are two standard coiled cables emerging from the motor housing. This includes two- and six-core cables both of which have red identification labels (labels should not be removed until final installation). Refer to Glazing Vision standard drawing 607- ASS-013 for details of wiring requirements. 4. The switch used to control the operation of the Three Wall Box is a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) type. This switch will allow you to operate and stop at any position between the fully open and closed positions. This switch also contains a tricolour LED to display rooflight status to the user. The correct control switch is supplied in the installation kit and must be installed to avoid invalidating the warranty. This switch can be installed in a maintenance area if required and another switch parallel wired for regular use. Using a SPDT switch that only latches on-on can seize the controller and therefore should not be used.
Page 3 of The other switch supplied in the installation kit is of double-pole single-throw (DPST) type. Installing this switch as per drawing 607-ASS-013 will allow the Three Wall Box control board to be reset in the event of a fault (for more on faults see the Operation & Maintenance manual). 6. The kerb should already be in place for the product. The dimensioning of the Three Wall Box will have taken into consideration the external dimensions of the front of the upstand, including all weathering, and the wall-to-wall dimensions. The construction of the Three Wall Box kerb is detailed on standard drawing 607-ASS Before starting installation, Glazing Vision advises that the physical kerb dimensions are cross-checked with those given for the order, to ensure the rooflight will fit. The kerb will need to be within ± 10mm of the ordered size. Check the top surface of the kerb is flat without undulations greater than ±2mm. Do the same for the inside faces of the walls, with no undulations greater than ±5mm. Check the cable exit hole has been included in the kerb. Also check the diagonals to ensure the kerb has been constructed square. The kerb must be weathered as per the sales drawings. Note: if using any metallic waterproofing material, this cannot be applied across the top surface of the kerb as this will cause a thermal bridge which can lead to internal condensation and invalidate the rooflight warranty.
Page 4 of 12 Installation procedure Preparation Make sure there is a safe working environment. This should consist of a stable working platform inside on the stairs leading up to the rooflight. The unit should reach site with lifting gear already attached. Please Note: Do not use the lifting frame to lift both the unit and the timber frame. Detach the unit from the timber build frame using the lifting gear/frame. Please ensure all screws attached to build frame are removed-check the front section that sits on the kerb also. Once all screws are removed, attach lifting eyes. Before siliconing the kerb either do a dry fit or measure unit and the wall abutment space to confirm the rooflight fits. I the unit needs to be lifted with the timber build frame it MUST be stropped from underneath. Remove all screws in build frame Figure 1 Lifting gear A temporary wood batten should be attached to the wall to support the weight of the unit while fitting.
BATTEN Page 5 of 12 Measure the height of the unit from the front kerb to the top of the unit at the back as shown. (Fig 2.) Measure from bottom where rooflight sits on kerb to the underneath of the support frame that will sit on the batten Fig 2. Then attach the batten on the back wall (Fig 3.) making sure it is level. Be careful where you place the screws in the batten as the batten will need to be removed after fixing the rooflight to the wall abutment. Fix batten 5mm-10mm lower than the taken measurement, this is to allow for adjustment whilst fitting. Once rooflight is measured, fix batten to wall around 5mm to 10mm lower than the taken measurement so adjustment can be made using packers to get the correct level. Fig 3.
Page 6 of 12 Use shims on the batten to achieve the correct height before fixing to wall. The front vertical should be at 90 (Fig 4) Fig 4. When you are happy that the batten is set up correctly and had a dry fit, (or measurements have been checked) then silicone the kerb ready for proper fit. (fig5.) Apply two or three continuous beads of silicone along the top face of the front of the kerb (roughly in positions shown in Figure 5). Use shims to support the back edge (around 4mm-6mm gap.) At least two silicone beads along the kerb, Use plenty of silicone. Use shims along the back edge Fig 5 Silicone bead positioning
Page 7 of 12 Move the frame into position so that the front support plate sits on the front of the kerb (Fig 6.) Use shims here (back edge) to add support. Gap is around 4-6mm. be generous with the silicone. Use plenty of silicone here Front support plate against kerb. Weathering by others. Silicone on kerb here Fig 6. Ensure that provision for the cabling into the upstand is of suitable dimensions and positioned correctly as shown on drawing 607-ASS-202. Fig 7 depicts the cables exiting through the bottom of the rooflight into the kerb structure:
Page 8 of 12 Rooflight framework Cable exiting bottom of rooflight to be fed into kerb during installation. Please thoroughly silicone this area inside. Kerb structure with cable exit hole refer to drawing 607-ASS-202 for dimensioning details. (Kerb not supplied by Glazing Vision) Figure 7 - Position of power and control cables in motor housing Once seated into the correct position, fix the support frame to the walls and front base to the kerb using the No10 x 2½ woodscrews (F0314) and horseshoe packers (F0016, F0015 & F0018) supplied. Front base frame. Support frame sits behind front base frame here. Fig 8. Holes should already be drilled through the support frame for the fixings to pass through and fix into the kerb. Use the packers to fill the space between the external kerb and
Page 9 of 12 inside of the front base. Care should be taken when tightening the fixings to ensure the frame does not distort. Fix the drip flashings into place, (Fig 9) starting with the back 1. Then the horizontals 2. And finally the verticals 3. The back flashing should sit so that it is leaning forward at an angle of 3 - use packing if necessary to achieve this. Once in place, apply grey glue at the joins between the flashings to tidy up the appearance. Figure 9 - Position of drip flashings
Page 10 of 12 Figure 10 Silicone sealing Lengths of PIR and cover plates should be supplied with the unit. Place PIR in the cavity all around the unit as shown, these can be lightly glued in place whilst fitting cover plates. Figure 11 PIR position
Page 11 of 12 Figure 12 Adding PIR & cover plates Apply double sided SAT tape at these points. Make sure the tape is not visible Bond the cover plates to the underside of the frame to cover the gaps between the rooflight frame and the walls. The plates should be flush with the inside faces of the rooflight frame. Use SAT tape to hold plate in place. You may use a small amount of structural glue between the SAT tape if required. Don t make the bond too strong in case the plates need to be taken off at any stage. Cover plates Figure 13 Cover plate attachment
Page 12 of 12 Figure 14 Cover plates from below To complete the installation, the flying connections from the Three Wall Box must be terminated as per drawing 607-ASS-013. It is recommended both the PSU and GV control switch are placed within 10 metres of the Three Wall Box Rooflight. When extending the cables you should use 0.75mm2 for the power and 0.22mm2 for the control switch. However, larger cable can be used to limit voltage drop especially when extending to the maximum distance. Never apply mains power to either of the cables. Once all cables are in place, attach the low-voltage power warning sticker (P0049) to the 2-core cable coming out of the Rooflight. The extending of cables and wiring in the PSU is the responsibility of others (i.e. not GV Services) To commission the Three Wall Box, first check there are no obstructions preventing the door from moving freely e.g. scaffolding or loads placed on the door. Switch on the mains supply to the 24V PSU. When you are ready to run the Three Wall Box press the close button on the GV switch. This will start the initialisation of the roof Rooflight. Once the Rooflight has closed, operate as normal. Refer to trouble shooting guide if Rooflight doesn t close as expected or the GV control switch shows a red or blue colour LED. Check value settings using the Engineers Configuration Tool to ensure correct operation of the Rooflight. If a problem persists please contact Glazing Vision for assistance.
