5 CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION The Renishaw Tool Touch Probe used on the Hardinge CONQUEST T42 Chucker and Bar Machine allows the operator to set tool geometry offsets quickly and accurately. Once the probe has been installed on the machine and properly calibrated, tool set-ups and changes can be done in seconds. - NOTE - Normally, it is not necessary to redatum the probe unless one of the following occurs: The probe arm has been dropped. The probe tip has been replaced. The machine is operating at a temperature that is significantly different than that which it was datumed at. - PRECAUTIONS - To insure optimum accuracy, the following precautions should be observed: 1. The arm must be kept for a period of time at the same temperature as the machine to be sure the arm is at the same temperature as the machine. 2. The machine should be at its normal operating temperature. 3. When datuming or tool setting is being performed, the arm should be stored inside the machine enclosure, in a safe location. 4. After tool setting or datuming has been completed, the arm must be removed from the machine and stored in a clean safe environment. 5. Do not lift the arm except at its base or otherwise mishandle the arm. Although the arm is ruggedly constructed, any stress applied to it may affect its calibration. 6. All procedures outlined in the Hardinge Datuming and Tool Setting Instructions must be strictly adhered to since many of the sequences can affect the safe and accurate operation of the machine if not followed. 7. If there is a conflict between the Renishaw documentation supplied with the probe system and the Hardinge documentation, the Hardinge documentation will apply. M

6 PARAMETER SETTINGS As shipped from the factory, machine parameters 5015 through 5018 are set for the tool probe option. However, before the probe is datumed, the parameter values should be checked to verify that they are correct. Parameters 5015 through 5018 are 8-bit parameters. All eight bits of each parameter should be set to zero. If the parameter values are correct, proceed with the Datuming Instructions in Chapter 2 of this manual. If the parameter values are not correct, use the procedure beginning below, entitled MODIFY PARAMETER SETTINGS, to set each parameters to the correct value. TO VERIFY PARAMETER SETTINGS 1. Press the DGNOS/PARAM function key on the MDI/CRT panel. 2. Press the PARAM soft key. 3. Use the PAGE key to view the parameter page containing parameters 5015, , and TO MODIFY PARAMETER SETTINGS - CAUTION - Use extreme caution when editing machine parameters. Making incorrect changes in the parameter table may disable the machine or cause undesirable machine behavior. - NOTE - Machine parameter settings require that Parameter Write be enabled. After the parameter settings have been completed, Parameter Write must be disabled. 1. Press the OFFSET SETTING key. 2. Press the SETING soft key. 3. If necessary, use the page up/down keys to display the SETTING (HANDY) page. 4. If necessary, use the cursor keys to move the cursor to the PARAMETER WRITE field. 5. Press the MDI push button. 6. 14 61. Key in X and the dimension from step 58. Press the MEASURE soft key. - NOTE - The length of the tool tip C is now entered in offset 26 X. This value will be used in the XP calculation. This completes the calibration of tool tip dimensions A, B, and C. These dimensions will be used to datum the probe. The fourth dimension D will be found after the probe has been datumed using these three points. DATUMING THE TOOL PROBE - CAUTIONS - The procedures outlined in the following instructions must be performed exactly as outlined to prevent erroneous input of the offsets. Do not disturb the workpiece in the collet as this will be used to calculate point D. When the probe option is turned ON, do not touch the probe with any object other than the tool which is being set. When touching the tool tip to the probe use the (.0001 in) increment and turn the handwheel very slowly, one click at a time. - NOTE - If the tool tip contacts the probe while using the JOG push buttons, axis motion will stop. Handle mode must be activated, and the tool must be moved away from the probe surface using the MPG handwheel. When the probe is in position and the probe option is turned ON, jog feedrate is limited to 50 ipm maximum. 1. Home the X and Z axes, remove the probe mount cover, and install the probe arm. 2. Turn the probe option ON as outlined on page Index the turret to the tool station equipped with the front-turning tool. 4.
