2 Foam very light weight, easy to cut/sand, forgiving, least durable, low temp sensitive to certain glue types various types & characteristics based on manufacturing method Depron sheets/boards Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) strong, stiff, can snap apart Expanded Polyethylene (EPE ) smooth, most resilient, flexible Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) rough, more resilient, less stiff Expanded Polyolefin (EPO) alternate naming for EPP or EPE 3 Plastic low cost, light weight, inflexible, easy to cut/sand/drill generally injection molded can repair with proper adhesive 4 2

3 Wood common, easy to work with (cut/sand/drill/glue) used for airframe, interior mounts, etc. types balsa very light weight, sheets/sticks, airfoils spruce heavier but quite strong, sticks, blocks plywood sheets, firewalls, mounts 3 ply, 6 ply 5 Metal metal highly durable, high precision, less friendly to work with used for motors, shafts, mounts, structural, gear types aluminum lighter weight, easier to work with (more pliable) steel heavy, higher strength 6 3

4 Carbon Fiber modern composite material featuring high strength & light weight thus: high strength-to-weight ratio carbon fiber strands bound with a polymer such as epoxy expensive to produce used for landing gear, booms, wing tubes cannot be cut; must grind/mill, sand, or drill forms: rods, tubes, cloth, sheets 7 Tools used with suas Airframes suas airframes require a variety of tools for assembly, support, maintenance generally handtools or small power tools as used for modeling powertools: drillpress benchtop saws: table, scroll benchtop sander rotary tool 8 4

5 Tools for Design pencils, pens, engineering notebook/graph paper for sketching ruler, tape measure, caliper, protractor for measuring vector drawing software for CAD ex: Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Autodesk AutoCAD/Inventor, Inkscape (free!)
