1 . Outer Support Structure ssembly ssembly ocument Rev. IV (i) REMEMER OPPER GSKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ii) Place cme nuts and then spherical washer pairs on -/2 cme studs. (iii) Lower (brown) pillar flanges (p ) over studs and level to proper height. (iv) dd spherical washer pairs and -/2 cme nuts and finger tighten, holding pillar flanges in place. (v) Lower (turquoise) spacer assemblies into place and bolt down. (vi) Re-check level and height. Tighten cme nuts. (vii) olt non-rotatable side of the bellows assembly to (dark green) outside flange welded to (red) external tube (p to p ); don t forget the copper gasket. Repeat for the other three external tube assemblies. (viii) ompress bellows and hold in place by means of brackets (p ) and 5/6-24 threaded rods (p ). (ix) olt external assembly fixtures (p ) to chamber flanges such that these support and center the (red) external tubes during assembly. (x) Install lift rings in all components that need them, (double mount, inside tube assemblies, main support table, etc). (xi) Position external tube assemblies through chamber ports by means of crane and/or fork lift. on t forget the copper gaskets. Make sure to protect the knife-edges of the conflats, and take care to keep the vacuum side portions of the tube assemblies clean. (xii) Slide the double mounts (p ) onto the spacer assemblies and under the external tube assemblies. Start the bolts that secure them in place; lower the external tubes into the vees. (xiii) olt the (gold) cap flanges (p ) to the ends of the (red) external tubes. (xiv) t this point, the (red) external tubes should be resting on the assembly fixtures and the vees of the double mounts, which are loosely bolted to the (xv) (turquoise) spacers. Retract the external tube assemblies as much as practical to make room for the (brown) inside support tube assemblies. (xvi) y means of a plumb line, vertically align the rotation of the bolt pattern of the (gold) cap flanges. (xvii) Lower the inside tube assemblies into place and start all the bolts. Reposition the external tube assemblies as needed in order to tighten and center the inside support tube assemblies. (xviii) Lift the support tubes sufficiently to remove the assembly fixtures from the chamber port flanges, and lower the tubes onto the double supports. (xix) Place a level or straightedge across the tube flats and adjust the rotation until they are coplanar. Make leveling adjustments to -/2 cme nuts above and below the pillar flanges as necessary. Ensure that the tubes are centered endto-end in the chamber.

2 (xx) (HP) Press six qty ½ Vented owel Pins into place in the Main Support Table. (xxi) Install the stage spring pillars (p ) on the main support table (p ). (xxii) Lift the main support table assembly into place and start all the bolts. (xxiii) Ensure good contact across the flats and tighten all the bolts. (xxiv) heck the table for level and readjust as necessary by means of the -/2 cme nuts above and below the pillar flanges. (xxv) Install double clamps (p ). (xxvi) Remove the brackets (p ) from the bellows and bolt the rotatable bellows conflats to the chamber conflats. (xxvii) Install bellows shields (p ) to double clamps. (xxviii)install the p , Vertical Force Pillars to the Main Support Table. (xxix) Install the three p , Kinematic Stud, Stage (3/4 x 3.7 domed hex head) into the Vertical Force Pillar, with the dome side up. Finger tighten down to the shoulder under the bolt head. (xxx) Install the Vertical outer support structure-stage # lockdown learance olt (.5 x 4.5 hollow bolt and jam nut) into the Vertical Force Pillar. If concern arises regarding the small clearance this allows when assembling the Stages to the Support structure, the learance olt can be set into position directly beneath it s hole during said assembly). (xxxi) olt the p , ovetail, Horizontal Forcer to the side of the purple pillars. 2. Stage 2 ssembly (i) (HP) Press pins into p Vertical Supports. (ii) Install and remove lifting rings in components as necessary. (iii) Lift the p Interstitial using a crane. Loosely bolt the p Tube, Torsion to the underside of the Interstitial. (iv) Stand a p , Vertical Support upright on the floor. Lower the Interstitial into position on the Vertical Support (be careful, as there are three different configurations). lternately, one can lift the Vertical supports up to the Interstitial and hold while fastening. Tightly bolt the two together. Repeat with the other Vertical supports, alternating sides of the Interstitial to keep it somewhat balanced. (v) Set the p Keel Plate on a suitable working surface which allows access underneath to the holes for the gold ribs (vi) Lift the assembly into position over the Keel Plate. Loosely bolt the Keel Plate to the underside of the Vertical supports and entral Tube. When all bolts are inserted, tighten all bolts, including the ones holding the entral tube to the Interstitial. (vii) Install the three p , Kinematic Stud, Stage 2 (3/4 x 2 domed hex head) into the intermediate stage, with the dome side up. Finger tighten down to the shoulder under the bolt head.

3 (viii) Install the p Inserts, Flexure ase, Stage 2 (6.7 long) into the intermediate stage from below. (ix) Set this Stage 2 ssembly down, resting on the Keel Plate, on some suitable surface such as a pallet, plywood, or boards. (x) Lift the p Support enter Table piece onto the top of the intermediate stage and bolt from the underside. 3. Stage ssembly (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (HP) Press dowel pins into the top and bottom of the p Frame, Stage (for locating the springs and the bottom plates). Install lifting rings into components as necessary. ssemble the p Weldment, Lockdown (3/4 threaded stud welded to a disk) to the p Plate, ottom, Stage. Hoist p Frame, Stage (in order to have access underneath). ttach the plates from the previous step to the underside of the Stage Frame. Install the p Inserts, Flexure ase, Stage (4 long) to the underside of the frame. 4. Stage to Stage 2 ssembly and Lock own (i) (ii) Lift the Stage Frame into place over the Stage 2 ssembly. arefully lower the Stage ssembly into place, ensuring that the ¾ threaded studs pass through the.5 threaded holes in the interstitial without damaging either part. Rest the Stage ssembly on the Kinematic Studs previously inserted in the Interstitial. (this will set the translation/vertical alignment/rotation of the two stages). Install the three Horizontal Stage 2 Lockdown Studs (3/4 x 8.25 threaded rod and jam nut) thru the 3 wide Vertical Supports and thread into the Stage Frame. Ensure.5 of thread engagement before locking the jam nut against the Stage Frame. (iii) Install the three horizontal stage 2 lockdown learance olts (.5 x 4.25 hollow bolt and jam nut) into the 3 wide Vertical Supports. (slip into place over the ¾ horizontal stud). (iv) Install the three vertical stage 2 lockdown learance olts (.5 x 2.88 hollow bolt and jam nut) into the Interstitial from below (slip into place over the ¾ vertical stud). (v) ssemble the ¾ heavy jam nuts and then the ¾ standard jam nuts to the ¾ (vi) vertical and horizontal Studs. The lockdown mechanisms should now all be engaged (so that the stages cannot move relative to each other) by first tightening the hollow.5 learance olts to Stage, then tightening the ¾ jam nuts on the ¾ Studs down to the learance olt heads. e careful not to over-tighten the lockdown mechanisms prematurely such that the Kinematic Studs become disengaged or biased. Lock down the Verticals first, then the Horizontals.

4 5. Stage and Stage 2 ssorted rackets and Hardware (i) Install the three p Joint, Horizontal Forcer, Stg to the Stage Frame. (ii) Install the three p Jam Nut and adjustment screws (for adjusting the elevation of the Horizontal Forcer) to the underside of the Stage Frame. (iii) It may be a good idea (for accessibility reasons) to attach the p Trim Wt, Lower, Stg to the underside of the Stage Frame at this point. Each of the three corners should receive three of the 0kg and one of the 5 kg weights. (iv) (HP) Press Pins into the three p Lock locks (v) ssemble the three p Vee, Hard Inserts into the Lock locks. (vi) (vii) ttach these assemblies to the underside of the Stage Frame. olt all three magnets of the stage # Vertical Forcers to the Lock lock, ensuring that you first insert the coil attachment bolts (set hex bolts and washer in their holes in the coil for later use, as they will not be insertable after the Magnets are attached to the Lock locks). (viii) Install the three Vertical Stage Lockdown Studs (3/4 x 8.25 threaded rod and jam nut) into the Lock locks. Ensure.5 of thread engagement before locking the jam nut against the Stage Frame. (o not install the Horizontal Lockdowns yet). 6. Stages ssembly to Support Structure (i) (ii) (iii) Lift the Stages ssembly (ensuring that the two stages are locked together at the nominal alignment) into place over the Outer Support Structure ssembly. arefully lower the Stages ssembly into place, ensuring that the ¾ threaded studs pass through the.5 threaded holes in the Vertical Force Pillars without damaging either part. Rest the Stages ssembly on the Kinematic Studs previously inserted in the Vertical Force Pillars. (this will set the translation/vertical alignment/rotation of the Stages/Structure). Install the horizontal outer support structure-stage # lockdown Studs and learance olts (3/4 x 0. threaded rod and jam nut,.5 x 5.25 hollow bolt and jam nut) into the Lock lock and Vertical Force Pillar. The lockdown mechanisms should now all be engaged (so that the Stages ssembly cannot move relative to the Support Structure) by first tightening the learance olts to their stops, then tightening the ¾ jam nuts on the ¾ Studs down to the learance olt heads. e careful not to over-tighten the lockdown mechanisms prematurely such that the Kinematic Studs become disengaged or biased. Lock down the Verticals first, then the Horizontals. 7. Stage and Stage 2 Forcer and Position Sensor ssemblies. (i) olt all three coils of the stage # Vertical Forcers to the Vertical Force Pillar, using the screw placed there in step 5.

5 (ii) Loosely assemble all three stage # Horizontal Forcer (magnet and coil) and their dovetail assemblies. Slide these assemblies into both of the ovetail Joints on Stage and the Spring Pillars. lign vertically, fixture using p Gage, Forcer, Stage and p Gage, Forcer, Stg, and tighten all the bolts and both of the ovetails. Remove fixtures. (iii) Install p , oil djuster and adjustment screw to the top of the p , ovetail, Horiz Forcer. (iv) ttach p Gusset, Stage to the top of Stage (v) ssemble all three stage #2 Horizontal Forcer (magnet and coil) to the Magnet ovetail assembly. olt onto the side of the stage #2 Vertical Supports. Feed the p ovetail, oil, Horz Forcer, Stg 2 through the Vertical Support and attach loosely to the coil. Slide the p Joint, oil, Horz Forcer, Stg 2 into engagement with it s dovetail and then loosely attach to Stage. lign components, fixture using p Gage, Forcer, Stg 2 and p Gage, Thin, Forcer, Stg 2, and tighten all screws and ovetails. Remove fixtures. (Shim joints if necessary for parallel alignment of the magnets and coils). (vi) Loosely assemble the stage #2 vertical Forcer (magnet and coil) to the oil racket and install between the Stage 2 Interstitial and Stage. lign components, fixture using p Gage, Forcer, Stg 2 and p Gage, Thin, Forcer, Stg 2, and tighten screws. Remove fixtures. (Shim parts if necessary for parallel alignment of the magnets and coils). (vii) ttach three p Target, Pos Sensors to the top of the Interstitial. ssemble three Targets to the three p racket, Target, Pos Sensor, and attach these assemblies to the top of the Interstitial. (viii) ssemble the capacitive sensors to the p racket, Position Sensor and bolt onto the side of the stage # structure. (set the initial alignment with a mm Fixture, p Gage, Position Sensor [- wrong, needs to be 0.25mm thk]). Tighten all screws, and remove the Fixture. (Shim brackets if necessary for parallel alignment of the Sensors and Targets). 8. Stage Instrument Pods (i) Place the p ase, Pod, Stg onto a flat reference table (ii) ssemble the short p V-lock, L4- to the p L-racket, L4-. Install the L4- s to the V-locks and tighten down with two p Hose lamp, L4-. (iii) olt the L4- assemblies into the stage Pod ase (iv) Remove the existing STS-2 Feet. Insert the p Foot Rider and p STS2 foot onto the existing STS-2 feet studs. (v) Install the STS-2 locking/unlocking devices to the STS-2 band. (vi) olt copper ribbons between the STS-2 and the pod base. (vii) Place the STS-2 into the pod base and level using the internal bubble level. olt down using the p lamp, STS2 foot. (viii) Install the p over, Pod, Stg.

Stage 2 Instrument Pods (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (vii) Remove the GS-3 cans, handles, and lockdown spindle/gears. ttach the locking/unlocking device to the GS-3 frame. ttach the new foot bracket to the GS-3. olt the vertical instrument to the pod base and install the (two) foot clamps. Set the horizontal pod base on a flat reference table. Set the horizontal pod base on a flat reference table. Place the horizontal instrument into the can base and level. olt down with the foot clamps. Install the pod covers. 0. Stage # III and ssociated rackets II (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Install the stage # instrument pods and bolt down from underneath ssemble the Targets to the p racket, Position Sensor and bolt onto the Lock lock under stage # ssemble six of the Position Sensors to six of the p racket, Target, Pos Sensor and bolt onto the Vertical Force Pillars (set the initial alignment with a mm Fixture, p Gage, Position Sensor). Tighten all screws, and remove the Fixture. (Shim brackets if necessary for parallel alignment of the Sensors and Targets). olt on cable clamps. Flexure Installation (i) The kinematic alignment fixtures should ensure that the stages/outer support structure are located in their nominal positions (in all six degrees of freedom) (ii) Install the stage #2 springs to the top of Stage (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (vii) Install the stage # springs onto the Spring Pillars. Place the p Top Mt, Flexure on the top of the Springs (ensure that the shoulder of the Top Mount fits into the hole in the spring). ssemble the p Washer, ustom and a -8 hex jam nut to the bottom of the Top Mount (under each spring) and tighten. Pre-load the springs using p Grip, Spring (there are two configurations, one for Stage Springs and one for Stage 2 Springs), p Rod, Threaded, Spring Pre-load (again, there are two configurations), and the associated nuts, spherical washer, and thrust bearing (see assembly print p sm, Spring, Flexure). rop the p Flexure, ar through the Top Mount and the hole in spring The lower end of the Flexure should now be inserted into the p , Insert, Flexure ase in the bottom of Stage and Stage 2. (viii) If the top of the flexure sits flush with the top of the Top Mount, use the preloading mechanism to pull the spring slightly down until the top of the Flexure is just slightly above flush with the top of the Top Mount.

7 (ix) (x) (xi) (xii) (xiii) Tighten a coupling nut on the lower end of the flexure to the following torque specification: Stage 60in#; Stage 2 00in# ack off the pre-loading mechanism until the tension is carried by the flexure. Tighten the collet to grab the upper end of the flexure Remove the pre-loading mechanism Repeat for the remainder of the stage # and stage #2 springs/flexures 2. Trim Mass (i) olt 225kg? of trim mass on to stage # (ii) olt 45kg? of trim mass onto stage #2 (iii) Place 20kg of LIGO I cylinders at 9 positions on the keel plate (between the gold ribs) 3. Stage #2 II (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Install the horizontal and vertical GS-3 cans Lift the optical table into place. Ensure the correct orientation of the optical table for the gold ribs and ¼-20 s for the ETF chamber position (if critical). olt the optical table onto the dark red 9-fold piece and the gold ribs Place 400kg? of payload (in the form of LIGO I cylinders) on the surface of the optical table 4. Hang the Stages (i) (ii) (iii) ack off the kinematic alignment fixtures and remove Starting with stage #2, release the horizontal lockdown by doing the following: ack off the lockdown feet. Start with the Horizontals. ack the ¾ jam nuts off by 0.40mm then back off the learance olts by 0.20mm. Make sure to lock the jam nuts into position on both the ¾ and.5 bolts. (iv) Next back off the Verticals. These are a bit more tricky. Slowly back the ¾ jam nuts off by a small amount, and witness weather the stage rises or remains located on the learance olts. If the stage rises, add trim mass until it again rests on the learance olts. Finally, back off the ¾ jam nuts a total of 0.40mm. (v) (vi) ack off the learance olts by a small amount and see if the stage remains in place or drops along with the learance olt. Remove Trim Mass as necessary to keep the Stage in it s nominal position. (The Inter-Stage separation can be verified using p Gage, Stage 2.). The Lockdown Feet should eventually be backed off just enough such as to limit the travel of Stage 2 to 0.25mm in any direction. Finally, back off the learance olts a total of 0.20mm. dd or remove mass as necessary until stage #2 hangs at its nominal height.

8 (vii) Repeat the procedure for stage #. (The Stage to Support Structure separation can be verified using p Gage, Stage ). The Lockdown Feet should eventually be backed off just enough such as to limit the travel of Stage to 0.90mm in any direction (i.e., back off the ¾ jam nuts a total of.80mm, and the learance bolts a total of 0.90mm). (viii) Iterate between stage #2 and stage # if necessary. 5. ctuator lignment (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) The stages are now hanging at their nominal position It is probably a good idea to set the nominal height of the horizontal actuator such that it forces through a plane defined by the lower zero moment point of the stage #/stage #2 flexures. This should be set when the dove/tail sections of the dovetail joint are flush. Lock down the joints The stage # actuator alignment was set in section 8 as access is severely limited once the table is in place. ny additional alignment will require that the dovetail joints be loosened and the magnet and coil halves be moved together (it is not possible to easily insert the coil-magnet alignment jigs at this stage). For stage #2, bolt the coil portion of the actuator to stage # and remove the alignment spacers. ny additional adjustment will be achieved inserting the coil-magnet alignment jigs and loosening dovetail joints. The magnet will track the coil through the alignment jigs.
