1 PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SCOPE OF WORK A. S. Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) Galvanized Steel Chain-Link Fence Fabric Product Manual. T. Federal Specification, RR-F-191/IA, Fencing, Wire and Post, Metal (Chain-Link Fence Fabric) SUBMITTALS A. Submittals shall be in accordance with Section B. Shop Drawings 1. Submit for approval Shop Drawings for fences and gates, including plan layout and details illustrating: a. Fence height, b. Location, c. Sizes of post, rails, braces, gates and footings, d. Hardware list, and e. Erection procedures. 2. Submit for approval six (6) approval copies of manufacturer s technical data test reports on the physical properties, and installation instruction for steel fences and gates. C. Samples: Submit for approval samples approximately 6 inches long or 6 inches square of fabric material, framework members, and typical accessories, in a full range of manufacturer s standard and custom colors. The Engineer s review will be for color and texture only Compliance with all other requirement is the exclusive responsibility of the Contractor. TALL OAKS STP
3 1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Erector Qualifications: The erector must be a firm experienced in the erection of fencing of the type specified and approved by the manufacturer. The erector shall have a minimum of five (5) years experience in installation of fencing of the type specified. B. Design Criteria: comply with the standards of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturer s Institute Product Manual and Federal Specification RR-F-191/IA/1C, unless otherwise shown or specified. C. Source Quality Control: Provide each type of fence and gate as a complete unit produced by a single manufacturer, including necessary erection accessories, fittings and fasteners PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store the equipment furnished under this Section in compliance with the instructions of the equipment manufacturer and as outlined in Section B. Handle and store materials in such manner as to avoid damage. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 GENERAL A. All fencing installed shall be six foot (6 ) high Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) coated chain link fence. B. Finish for Framework and Appurtenances: Furnish the following finishes for steel framework and appurtenances: 1. Galvanized finish with minimum weights of zinc as follows: a. Pipe: ASTM A 120, Schedule 40, 1.8 ounces of zinc per square foot. b. Hardware and Accessories: ASTM A 153, zinc weight per Table I, Federal Specification RR-F-191/1A. 2. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) epoxy modified plastic resin finish, fusion bonded to heated metal, minimum 10-mils thickness. The physical properties of the polyvinyl chloride coasting shall be as follows: a. Specific Gravity: ASTM D 792, 1.26 to 1.30, Max. b. Ultimate Tensile Strength: ASTM D 412, 2,600 psi, 5 percent. 4 c. Hardness: ASTM D 2440, Durometer A (10 Second) , Durometer D (10 seconds) 45 ± 5. d. Ultimate Elongation: ASTM D 412, 275% ± 5 percent. e. Compression Cut Resistance: 2,000 pounds per square inch. f. Low Temperature Brittleness: ASTM D 746, -20º C g. Low Temperature Flexibility: (Mandrel -40º C h. Weatherometer Exposure: ASTM G 23, with no change, 1,000 hours FABRIC A. Furnish chain link fabric as follows: 1. One-piece fabric widths for fence heights up to 12 feet. 2. No. 6 gage ( ) fabric zinc galvanized steel core wires inch mesh, 4. Top selvages twisted and barbed and bottom selvage knuckled for fabric over 60 inches high. 5. Galvanized finish with not les than 2.0 ounces zinc per square foot, and no single specimen shall show less than 1.8 ounces per square foot. 6. Fabric shall meet the requirements of ASTM F668, Class 2B. 7. Shall meet ASTM F668 Class 2B POSTS, RAILS AND BRACES A. End, Corner and Pull Posts: Furnish end, corner and pull posts of galvanized steel, minimum sizes and weights as follows: 1. Up to 6-0 Fabric Height: 2.5-inches O.D. pipe, weighing 3.65 pounds per linear foot (lbs. /lin. ft.). 2. Fabric heights over 6-0 : 3.0-inch O.D. pipe weighing 5.79 pounds per linear foot. (lbs. /lin. ft.). 3. Intermediate pull posts shall be placed at intervals no greater than 500 feet in the fence lines, or as directed by the Engineer. TALL OAKS STP
5 B. Line Posts: Furnish galvanized steel line posts of the minimum sizes and weights as follows. Posts to be spaced 10 feet on centers maximum, unless otherwise shown. 1. Up to 6-0 fabric height: 2.0-inhes O.D. pipe weighing 2.70 pounds per linear foot. 2. Fabric height over 6-0 but less than 8-0 : 2.5 inches O.D. pipe weighing 3.65 pounds per linear foot. 3. Fabric height over 8-0 : 3.0 inches O.D. weighing 5.79 pounds per linear foot. C. Gate Posts: Furnish galvanized steel posts for supporting single gate leaf, or one leaf of a double gate installation, for nominal gate widths as follows: 1. Up to 6-0 : 3.0 O.D. pipe weighing 5.79 pounds per linear foot 2. Over 6-0 : 4 O.D. Schedule 40 galvanized steel posts weighing 9.11 pounds per linear foot. D. Top Rail: Furnish top rails, unless otherwise shown, of the following: inch O.D. pipe weighing 2.27 pounds per linear foot. 2. Furnish in manufacturer s longest length. E. Couplings: Expansion type couplings, approximately 6 inches long, for each joint. F. Attaching Devices: Provide means for attaching top rail securely to each gate, corner, pull and end post. G. Sleeves: Galvanized steel pipe not less than 6 long and with an inside diameter not less than ½ greater than the outside diameter of the pipe. Provide steel plate closure welded to the bottom of the sleeve of a width and length not less than 1 greater than the outside diameter of the sleeve. H. Center Rails Between Line Posts: furnish center rails between line posts where indicated, consisting of 1.66 inch O.D. pipe weighing 2.27 pounds per linear foot. I. Post Brace Assembly: Furnish manufacturer s standard adjustable bracing assemblies at the end of gate posts at both sides of corner and pull posts, with horizontal brace located at midheight of fabric. Use same materials at top rail for brace, and truss to line posts with diameter rod and adjustable tighter. J. Tension Wire: Furnish tension wire consisting of 7 gage galvanized steel-coated coil spring wire, located at the bottom and top of fabric. K. Posts Tops: Galvanized steel, weathertight closure cap for each tubular post. Furnish one cap for each post unless equal protection is afforded by combination post top cap and barbed wire supporting arm, Where barbed wire is required. Furnish caps with openings to permit passage of top rail. TALL OAKS STP
6 L. Stretcher Bars: Galvanized steel, one-piece lengths equal to full height of fabric, with minimum cross-section of 3/16 by 3/4". Provide one stretcher bar for each gate and end post, and two for each corner and pull post. M. Stretcher Bar Bands: Galvanized steel, spaced not over 15 inches on center to secure stretcher bar to end, corner, pull and gate posts. Bands may also be used with special fittings for securing rails to end, corner, pull and gate posts. N. Gate Cross Bracing: 3/8 diameter galvanized steel adjustable length truss rods GATES A. Manufacturer: The gates shall be the aluminum swing gate type (unless otherwise noted) as shown on the Contract Drawings. B. Frame: Gate frame shall be made of 2 square aluminum tubing, alloy 6063-T6, weighing 0.94 pounds per linear foot and shall be welded at all corners so as to form a rigid one-piece unit. Fabric shall be securely stretched and held on all fours sides of the 2 square tubing by use of hook bolts and tension rods. C. Track: The enclosed track shall be a combined track and rail aluminum extrusion having a total weight of 3.72 pounds per foot and designed to withstand a reaction load of 2,000 pounds. D. Trucks: two swivel type zinc die cast trucks having four sealed lubricant ball-bearing wheels, 2 in diameter by 9/16 in width, with two side rolling wheels to insure alignment of truck in track shall be provided for each gate leaf. Truck shall be held to post brackets by 7/8 diameter ball bolts with 1/2" shank. Truck assembly shall be designed to take the same reaction load as the truck. E. Bracing: install diagonal cross-bracing consisting of 3/8-inch diameter galvanized steel adjustable length truss rods on dates where necessary to ensure frame rigidity without sag or twist. F. Guide Wheels: Guide wheel assemblies shall b e provided for each supporting post. Each assembly shall consist of two rubber wheels 4 in diameter and shall be attached to post so that the bottom horizontal member will roll between the wheels which can be adjusted to maintain plumb gate frames and proper alignment. G. Double Gate Hardware: Provide gate stops for double gates, consisting of mushroom type of flush plate with anchors set in concrete to engage center drop rod or plunger bar. Include locking device and padlock eye as integral part of the latch, using one padlock for locking both gate leaves. TALL OAKS STP
7 2.05 WIRE TIES A. Wire ties: For tying fabric to line posts, use 9-gage wire ties spaced 12-inches on center. For tying fabric to rails and braces, use 9 gage wire ties spaced 24-inches on center. For tying fabric to tension wire, use 11 gage hog rings spaced 24-iches on center. Ties to match fabric finish ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURER A. Allied Tube and Conduit Corp. B. Anchor Fence, Inc. C. Or equal. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL A. Do not begin fence installation and erection before the final grading is completed, with finished elevations established. The Contractor shall obtain written approval to commence installation from the Engineer, prior to commencing installation. All work-installed prior to the Contractor receiving this written approval shall be deemed unable and removed INSPECTION A. The Contractor and his installer must examine the conditions under which the fence and gates re to be installed and shall notify the Engineer in writing of conditions which are detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to the Engineer and written notice of said is received INSTALLATION A. Installation shall comply with the recommended procedure and instructions of the fencing manufacturer. B. Excavate hole for each post to the minimum diameter recommended by the fence manufacturer, but not less than four times the largest cross-section of the post. Excavate hole depths not less than 36-inches below the finish grade surface. C. Remove loose and foreign materials from the sides and bottom of the excavation and moisten soil prior to placing concrete. TALL OAKS STP
8 D. Center and align posts in holes with the bottom of the post 3 above the bottom of the excavation. E. Place 4,000 psi concrete around posts and vibrate or tamp for consolidation. Check each post for vertical and top alignment, and hold in position during placement and finishing operation. Extend concrete footing 2 above grade and trowel to crown to shed water away from post. F. Sleeve Set Posts: Anchor posts by means of pipe sleeves preset and anchored into concrete. After posts have been inserted into sleeves, fill annular space between posts and sleeve solid with non-shrink, non-metallic grout, mixed and placed to comply with grout manufacturer s directions. G. Top Rails: Run rail continuously, bending to form radius for, curved runs. Provide expansion couplings as recommended by manufacturer. H. Center Rails: Provide center rails where indicated. Install in one piece between posts and flush with posts on fabric side, using special offset fittings where necessary. I. Brace Assemblies: Install brace so posts are plumb when diagonal rod is under proper tension. J. Tension Wire: Install tension wires though posts cap loops before stretching fabric and tie to each post cap with not less than 6 gage galvanized wire. Fasten fabric to tension wire using 11-gage galvanized steel hog rings spaced 24 on center. K. Fabric: Leave approximately 2 between finish grade and bottom selvage. Pull fabric taut and tie to posts, rails and tension wires. Install fabric on security side of fence, and anchor to framework so that fabric remains in tension after pulling force is released. L. Stretcher Bars: Secure at end, corner, pull and gates posts by threading through or clamping to fabric at 4-inches on center, and secure to posts with metal bands spaced at 15-inches on center. M. Tie Wire: 1. Use U-shaped wire, confirming with diameter of pipe to, which attached clasping pipe and fabric firmly with ends twisted at least two full turns. Bend ends of wire to minimize hazards to persons or clothing. 2. Tie fabric to line posts with wire ties spaced 12-inches on center. Tie fabric to rails and braces with wire ties spaced 24-incheas on center. Tie fabric to tension wires with hog rings spaced 24-inches on center. 3. Manufacturer s standard procedure will be accepted if of equal strength and durability. N. Fasteners: Install nuts for tension bands and hardware bolts on side of fence opposite fabric side. Peen ends of bolts or score threads to prevent removal of nuts. O. Gates: Install gates plumb, level and secure for full opening without inference. Install ground-set items in concrete for anchorage. 9 P. Barb Wire: Three strands of galvanized steel barbed wire shall be installed to prevent the unauthorized access to the site. Barbwire shall be stretched from post to post to provide in a manner that provides a tight secure security line. Q. All fencing and gates shall be adjusted and left in good working condition. The Contractor shall repair or replace any broken or bent components as directed by the Engineer. R. All gates and fencing shall be protected from construction traffic until final acceptance of the Work. END OF SECTION TALL OAKS STP
