Teach Yourself tocarve Step-by-Step Instructional Guide Carving an EYE A carved eye can make or break a carving. That s why I suggest that beginners carve their own study sticks. Not only are the sticks good practice, but they also give you a tangible record of the carving process. Start by rounding the corner of a ¼" x ¼" x " stick and sketching in guidelines. With the rounded corner as your center point, divide two sides of the stick into five equal sections by drawing four lines on each side. Each line should be about ¼" apart. We will be carving the left eye. techniques Define the eyeball and bottom eyelid. Start at the left corner of the eye and draw a line that arcs three sections down and five sections up. Shape the eyeball area by making a stop cut along this line and tapering down to the line using the same used in Step. Teach yourself to quickly and easily carve a classic wood spirit with this all-in-one kit. It s as simple as copying each cut from the study stick onto the included basswood blank. The study stick shows you exactly what to do, and the booklet will show you exactly how. For more information about woodcarving and wood spirits, visit Define the bottom of the top eyelid. Sketch in the top eyelid. Start at the first line on the left side of the rounded corner and sketch an arc up for five sections and then arc back down for three. Your line will end on the last line to the right of the rounded section. Using a carving knife, make a stop cut about " deep along the line you sketched. Then start about ¾" down from the line and taper up to the line. Shape the bottom eyelid. Sketch in the pouch under the eye (mirroring the line of the bottom eyelid from step ). Turn your stick upside down and repeat the process from Step to create a hanging chip and then cut the chip free. This forms the bottom eyelid and pouch under the eye. Wood Spirit STUDY STICK $9.9 US Shape the upper eyelid. Hold your knife with the handle at 7 o clock ( o clock is the top of the stick). Press the knife tip into the wood just above the right side of the previous cut. Cut about ¼" into the wood at a 0 angle. Follow the line with the knife, creating a hanging chip. Press the center of the knife into the center of the rounded corner at approximately a 0 angle and rock the knife to either side to free the chip. Carve the pupil. Press a mm ( 8") # gouge about 8" into the wood where you want the pupil. The open end of the gouge should be at the top eyelid. This acts as a stop cut when you taper down the rest of the eyeball. Taper up to the pupil from 8" away from the stop cut.

Carving a MOUTH Carving an EAR This simple exercise will give you a sure-fire way to add an attractive mouth to your next folk carving. So go get a practice stick, set aside some time, and follow along as I show you my quick and easy method of making a mouth. Add the angel s kiss the two vertical lines that run from under the nose to the top of the upper lip. From the center of the lips, press towards where the nose would be with a ¼" gouge. Carving ears can be difficult. Start with a ¼" x ¼" x " blank. Draw a line down one side s center. Mark off six sections. Measure about ½" from top, and make a mark. Measure down ¾, and make another mark. Continue marking, alternating between ½" and ¾" lengths. The ½" space will divide the steps, with the carving steps performed in the ¾" space. Step should be performed on each of the six ¾" spaces, step should be performed on spaces two through six, etc. Carve the bottom part of the upper lip. Press knife straight into the corner. Position knife about 8" above the first cut on the corner s left side. Angle the handle to cut less on the mouth s left side than the center. Press knife down toward the first cut. Re-position knife about 8" above the first cut on the corner s right side. Angle knife to cut less wood on the right side of the knife, creating a raised triangle in the upper lip s center. Carve the top of the bottom lip. Position the knife down from the initial cut about of the distance you moved up for the second cut. Use the same techniques explained in Step one to define the top of the bottom lip. Make stop cuts along the three sides of the ear. Cut 8"-deep stop cuts along the first mark and the second mark. Make a third 8"-deep stop cut on the centerline to connect the two marks. Carve away the wood 8" on the outside of these marks up to the stop cut. Begin to shape the upper part of the upper lip. Press the tip of your knife about " in on both sides of the corner following the shape of the lip. Position the blade so you can rock back and forth to remove these chips as shown to the right. Define the bottom lip s lower part. Point knife blade away from mouth and angle it to cut less as you approach the handle. Press knife into wood. Re-position knife so blade is again pointing away from mouth, but angled so tip cuts less, and press, to create a raised triangle in lower lip s center. Position knife and rock back and forth to remove chips and finish the mouth. Mark the top corner of the ear. Measure down about ¼" from the top of the ear, and make a horizontal mark. Measure in about " in from the corner, and make a vertical mark. Make stop cuts along these lines.

Carving a NOSE Taper the side of the ear. Since the top corner of the ear is the furthest from the head, the rest of the ear needs to taper towards the head. Carve away the wood between the vertical mark and the head, tapering from the stop cut in to where the ear joins the head. With just a few tools and a little bit of time, you can master a proven technique for making noses that look good on many different types of carvings, including folk art figures and caricatures. Make the nose wings. Hold the gouge sideways and use the same techniques explained above to press the cutting edge into the sides of the nose the shape formed by the outer edges of the nostrils. Taper the ear from the tip to the lobe. Start at the horizontal mark ¼" from the tip of the ear. Taper the ear down from this mark to the stop cut at the lobe. You want the lobe of the ear to be about "-thick. Clean out under the nose. Use the carving knife as shown. Round off and shape the ear. Cut around the top and bottom of the ear to shape the outside curve of the ear. A folk art ear resembles a question mark. Under-cut the rear of the ear at the same time. The edges of the ear sit away from the head. Start with the bridge of the nose. Make a V-shaped cut across the corner. Then make a pencil mark ¾" down from the center of the V-shaped cut. Make the bottom edge of the nose by placing the in-cannel (curved inside) of a # ¼" gouge along the corner with the handle up towards the V-shaped cut. Line the cutting edge of the gouge up with the pencil mark. Then lift the handle of the gouge and press the cutting edge into the wood. Mark in the smile lines. Add a smile line in the shape of a lazy S and use a knife to carve them in a V on both sides (as shown above). Carve away some of the wood up to the gouge mark on the side of the nostril. Blend these cuts into the smile lines. Then clean out under the nose to the smile lines on both sides. Shape the inside of the ear. Pencil in the flap outside the ear canal (the tragus). Then stop cut around the tragus. Shave up to this stop cut to hollow out the ear canal. Add a shallow cut running just inside the outer perimeter of the ear to add further definition. Refine the ear, and smooth any rough cuts. Make the nostrils. Reverse the gouge so the handle is pointed away from the V-shaped cut. Use the same technique to make a cut on either side of the cut made in Step (as shown above). Clean out both sides of the nose. Use a # 8" gouge to remove wood where the cheeks would be to further define the bridge of the nose.

Carve a Classic WOOD SPIRIT Now that you have mastered the nose, eye, mouth, and ear, it is time to put them all together to carve a woodspirit. Start with the same ¼" x ¼" x " blank with one corner rounded over. Divide the two sides that come together at the corner into three equal sections. Stop cut around the nose. Use a # ¼" gouge to make a stop cut around the nose, as explained on the previous page. Make these stop cuts about ¼" deep. Below the tip of the nose, start about ¼" away and taper to the bottom of the stop cut. This forms the top of the lip. 7 Carve the mouth. Sketch upper lip s shape lip and moustache. Make stop cuts along those lines and round off cuts. Sketch in a half-moon shape for lower lip and make a stop cut along that line. Make a smaller half-moon shape inside the lip for the open mouth. Carve out the inside of mouth and round lower lip off. Add the eye trench. Use a # ¼" gouge to shave away the areas beside the bridge of the nose and under the browline where the eyes will be located. 8 Deepen the corners of the eyes. On a real person, the inside corner of the eye is nearly " deeper than the tip of the nose. For realistic shadows, press the tip of the knife 8" into the corner of the eye following the shape of the nose. Cut from the top and the bottom to free the chip. Define the hairline and the forehead. Press the center of the knife into the rounded corner about ". Roll the knife to both sides so this stop cut is deepest at the rounded corner and gets more shallow as it approaches the other corners. Move down about ½" along the rounded corner and taper up to the stop cut to shape the forehead. Add the smile lines. Sketch in a lazy S shape for the smile lines starting at the tip of the wings of the nose and down to where the corners of the mouth will be. Make a V-shaped cut along these lines with a carving knife, starting deep and getting more shallow as you move towards the end of the line. 9 Define the eyelid and round the eye. Sketch in the shape of the eye and take a small, V-shaped chip out along the line. Round the eye between the upper eyelid and the lower eyelid to form the eyeball. Define the bridge of the nose. Cut in at a º angle ½" below the center of the forehead taper to define the browline. Make the cut about ¼" deep. Move down about ½" from the bottom of this cut and taper up to the browline cut. Define the edge of the face. Sketch a line up around the face to define the bottom of the cheekbones. Make a V-cut along the line on each side of the face. Extend the lines up to the hairline, making the cut more shallow as you approach the hairline. 0 Shape the eyelids. Remove a V-shaped chip between the line of the upper eyelid and the brow line. Then remove a V-shaped chip from between the lower eyelid and the cheek line. Remove a second, smaller chip from within the chip you just cut to simulate bags under the eyes.

Carve small, half-round pupils in a symmetrical position on both eyes. For example, if the spirit is looking right, carve the pupil in the right corner of both eyes. Carve the forehead. Carve an x between the two eyebrows. Sketch in the shape of the eyebrows, using the x as a guide. Make a stop cut along this line. Then round over the edges to give the brow shape. Add some hair texture using a # " gouge. Finally add some hair texture to the beard and mouth using a # " gouge.
