Shading: The process of adding values to a drawing so as to create the illusion of texture, form, and/or three-dimensional space. Sketch: (noun) A simple representation, outline, or drawing that captures the integral aspects of a subject quickly and effi ciently. (verb) The process of rendering a sketch. Tip! Artists often become frustrated and overwhelmed by too much visual information in a detailed reference image. The key to creating a simple drawing when working from a detailed photo is to make sure you are very familiar with the structures of the various parts of your subject.

2 2 The parts of a dog s eye are not so different from those of a human s. Refer to Figure 2 and identify each of the following: 1. Iris: The colored circular section of an eyeball surrounding the pupil. 2. White of the eye: The large visible section of an eyeball that is light in value and color but is not really white. 3. Upper eyelid: A fold of skin that opens and closes automatically (blinks) to protect the eyeball. 4. Highlight: A small section of a drawing subject that is rendered with white or a very light value to identify the brightest area where light bounces off its surface. 5. Pupil of an eye: The dark circular shape within the iris that expands and contracts under different lighting conditions. Figure 2 6. Inner corner of an eye: A small, reddish, triangular or ovalshaped form in the inside corner of the eye close to the nose. 7. Lower eyelid: The fold of skin that protects the lower section of the eyeball. The lower eyelid cannot move without help from facial muscles around the eye. ArtSpeak Contour: The outline or a section of the outline of a shape or form. Form: An element of art that is created in drawings and paintings by using shading and/ or colors to transform shapes into threedimensional structures. Figure 3 Sketch Dog Eye Proportions 1. Use slightly curved lines to draw a triangular shape with rounded corners (Figures 3 to 5). Use an HB pencil and keep your lines very light so they can be easily erased. Pay close attention to the lengths, angles, and curves of the various lines. For example, the lower line is more rounded than the other two and the curved line on the right is shorter than the others.

Add another curved line inside the triangular shape (Figure 6). Note the points where this line intersects two sides of the triangular shape. In addition, this line is more curved at the top. Figure 7 3. Add two more curved lines to represent the outline of the iris (Figures 7 and 8). These two curved lines represent the sides of the outline of a round shape. The upper and lower sections appear to be under the dog s eyelids. Turn your drawing around in various directions and view it from different perspectives to confi rm that the iris looks round.

4 4 Figure 8 As an Aside The pupil of an eye is similar to the aperture in the lens of a camera it opens and closes as the levels of light become brighter or darker. Figure 9 4. Outline a highlight in the upper right section of the iris (Figure 9). 5. Draw a circular shape inside the iris to represent the pupil (Figure 10). The pupil is quite small when compared to the iris. Note that the highlight appears to overlap the pupil. Figure 10 Also, because of the angle from which the eye is being viewed, the pupil is placed closer to the right edge of the iris than the left. Bring the Eye to Life with Shading 6. Add light values to the visible section of the iris and the section of the white of the eye on the right (Figure 11). Use 2H and HB pencils and try to slant all your hatching lines in the same direction.

5 Figure 11 When viewed in profile, an eye is not a perfect sphere; the cornea of the iris bulges slightly outward. Figure Use HB and 2B pencils to add medium values to the inner section of the upper eyelid, the upper right and lower left sections of the iris, and the small section of the white of the eye on the left (Figure 12). The values need to be darker toward the outer edges of the iris to create the illusion that the cornea of the iris bulges slightly outward from the eyeball. Figure Use a 4B pencil to add dark values to sections of the eye (Figure 13). Add darker shading to: the upper part of the iris and around the perimeter of the lower half of the iris the upper and lower sections of the upper eyelid the parts of the whites of the eyes on both sides of the iris that are in shadow 5

6 9. Use an 8B pencil to add shading to the pupil (Figure 14). Figure 14 10.

Add darker shading to the sections of the whites of the eye closest to the upper eyelid.

Use your 6B pencil to add darker shading to the upper, lower, and outer sections of the upper eyelid. Figure 15 13.

Add darker shading to the sections of the whites of the eye closest to the upper eyelid. Use your 6B pencil; these dark values represent the shadows cast from the upper eyelids. 12. Use your 6B pencil to add darker shading to the upper, lower, and outer sections of the upper eyelid. Figure Use 2B and 4B pencils to add several narrow wiggly sections of shading that extend from the perimeter of the iris slightly inward toward the center of the pupil (Figure 15). These lines illustrate the tiny muscles in the irises of most eyes. Figure 16 Challenge! Refer to 6.2.A7 to draw a more detailed version of this dog eye in which you render the fur-textured forms around the eye and use blending to make the eye look shinier (Figure 16).
