Specifications Wingspan: 43cm Flying Weight: 33 grams (with battery) Channels: 3 Suggested Receiver: 4Ch Micro Motor: 7mm Brushed Geardrive Airframe Kit (Included Contents) * Airframe Parts Sheets (Depron) * Airframe Bracing Parts (Balsa) * Motor / Geardrive and Propeller * Control Linkages + Pushrods * Sandpaper Sheet * Decal Stickers The Mini Delta by MicronWings is designed to be a stable indoor flyer suitable for flying in indoor sports stadiums (example - basketball court) size areas. Needed to Complete * Micro Receiver with 2A ESC * Two Micro Servos (5320 Servos) * Transmitter and Battery Charger * Battery (Nanotech 160mah 1S) * Soldering Iron with Fine Tip * Epoxy Glue * White PVA Glue or Wood Glue * UHU Por Expanded Polystyrene Glue * Hobby Knife * Blenderm Hinge Tape (Link) * Modelling Tape - Optional (Product Link) * Sanding Block Designed around a geardrive motor, it has very good stable flight characteristics at slow speeds and will cruise straight and level at ½ throttle. It s aerodynamics allow for gentle turns with minimal loss of height while increasing the throttle will produce a gentle climb. Landing skids are attached to the wings to enable landing without damaging the airframe or motor and these skids also protect against frontal damage in the event of a crash.
Included Parts - Your kit includes the following parts. Depron and Balsa Parts Sheets and carbon rods Motor and Fittings Decal Stickers
Before You Start The Mini Delta is supplied as a kit form and needs to be constructed. You will need intermediate level model building skills to complete this kit. You may also require micro soldering skills to solder the battery leads and motor leads to your chosen receiver. Receivers, Servos and Battery You may choose to fit any micro receiver and servos you wish in this kit. However, the kit has been specifically designed for any of the following receivers and servos. 4ch DSMX/2 Rx with 2A ES 4ch FRSky Rx with 2A ESC Nano-Tech 160Mah Battery Servo 5320 Black HK5320 Servo Servo 5320 Black SH This is Recommended battery. Nanotech brand or similar generic brand. Australian customers can purchase these from MicronWings Control System Configuration You will need to be able to set up V-Tail / Elevon mixing on your transmitter to fly this aircraft. We suggest that you test this setup on your transmitter to ensure your transmitter is capable of this mixing before purchasing this kit. You can test the mixing ability of your transmitter with a standard size receiver and servos. Glues This kit requires a range of glues Foam glue, balsa glue and epoxy. * Use foam glue for all foam parts, to glue foam and balsa parts together, to glue carbon to foam. * Use wood glue to glue wooden parts together * Use Epoxy glue for gluing the geardrive in place on the wooden geardrive mount. Recommended Foam Glue UHU Por Expanded Polystyrene
Build Instructions Cut the motor mount parts from the balsa parts sheet and glue together as shown to make the motor mount. Flush on bottom Cut the canopy parts from the sheets. Bend the half scored section slightly to give it a slight bend. Bend at each score line. Then glue the side parts on as shown here. Allow the foam glue to be touch dry before bringing the parts together. Gaps Next glue the remaining two wooden pieces on the inside. Make them flush at the back here, leaving a gap at the other end. Use sandpaper to sand a small chamfer into the shorter edge of this wooden part. Then glue it in place in the front of the canopy as shown.
Next glue the wing supports onto the fuselage base plate as shown here. Ensure the wooden parts are at 90 degrees to the centerline of the base plate. Using a mat such as the green one shown here will help. Graph paper may also be used. Set this section aside to dry. Apply foam glue to the flat carbon strips as well as the two 6mm grey foam skids. Try to apply the glue in a thin layer using a matchstick to spread the glue may help. Apply the glue from the hole at the top all the way around to about the same position on the bottom. Allow 5 minutes for the glue to be touch dry before attaching the carbon strips to the skids. Start at the top where the hole is, and work around to the bottom. Ensure the carbon strip is centered on the foam. Solder the connector to the motor wires or alternatively solder the motor wires direct to the receiver board. If soldering to the recommended receiver board, note the polarity as shown below. Motor Negative Motor Positive Glue the geardrive in place using Epoxy glue. Make sure the front of the geardrive housing is flush with the balsa support here.
Bring each side of the wing bottom pieces together with the base plate without gluing and mark with a pen where the wing supports are. This will show where glue needs to be placed later. Glue the ribs in place on each of the wing bottoms. Ensure the wing ribs are vertical and centered in the two locating slots for each rib. Set these aside to dry for 15 minutes. Use the servo marker template and put it between the 2 nd and 3 rd ribs to mark the location of the servo. Make the sloped edge flush with the leading edge of the wing. This will indicate the position that the servo needs to be glued in place later. Sand a bevel on the skids which attach to the wings. Sand a bevel back to the carbon strip which was glued on. For the fins, leave these edges un-beveled on one side. Remember to make pairs left and right. The elevators hinge underneath. Either Undercut with a hobby knife or sand a deep bevel on the upper side. When sanding these long parts you may wish to put them flush with the edge of a desk to support them while they are being sanded.
At this time also glue in place the control horns. The elevators hinge upward so the horns go on the same side as the deep bevel or undercut Glue the wings to the base plate. Do a dry run first without adding glue to ensure the wing supports slide through the holes in the ribs and that everything lines up. Apply glue to the jagged edge on the base plate as well as the areas on the wings which were marked with a pen earlier. Don t allow the glue to dry before bringing the pieces together as they need to slide on each-other when fitting together. Work the wings on gently and press gently to bring the jagged parts together. Allow one wing to dry before attaching the other. Glue these two wooden half ribs in place as shown. Then glue in place the battery bay floor spacer part which is cut from 3mm grey Depron. If using the recommended receiver, glue in place the receiver positioning plate as shown. * If you are using your own receiver note that the receiver bay is 29mm square. Sand one end of the 230mm carbon rods to a point.
Flush here Feed the carbon rods through the holes in the wing ribs from the wing tips. Push the carbon rod through the balsa half rib and set it to be flush with the surface of the balsa. Tape one side of the wing to a flat surface before gluing the carbon rod in place. Use a matchstick to dab UHU Por Expanded Polystyrene glue around each joint where the carbon rod passes through the wing ribs. Allow the first wing to fully dry before moving onto the next wing. Don t Use this servo arm Longer arm with one end cut off For the servo arms you will need to use the longer ones to reach above the wing surface. Cut one side of the longer servo arm off and use this instead of the shorter one. Connect your servos to the receiver and see which servo needs to go on each side of the plane. Remember the control horns are on top of the wings. Servos can then be glued in place in the areas previously marked. You may need to slide them under the carbon rod. (Servos are not included in Kit) Servo arm toward rear as shown here While the wings are drying you may want to solder your battery connector to the receiver. We have included a Molex battery lead with the kit which is made from flexible soft silicone wire. 70mm is a good length for the battery lead. (Receiver is not included in Kit)
Place the wing upper surface pieces on the edge of a sharp corner such as the edge of a table. Press along each half cut to bend the foam to about 45 degrees. Rule a line here level with the edge of the holes in the upper wing surfaces. This will be used later as a guide for where to put the glue when gluing on the skids. There are slots in the two inner wing ribs to press the servo wires into. Position your servo wires so you have adequate length left in the receiver bay. Leading Edge apply glue to the actual edge of the sheet. Gluing on the upper wing surfaces Use foam glue and if using UHU Por Expanded Polystyrene glue, follow the below procedure. Take your time when applying glue to the wing surfaces. There is no hurry because the glue will need to be quite dry before bringing the surfaces together. You can even apply glue to all 4 wing surfaces before starting to attach the upper wing surfaces. Apply glue to all ribs, and around the very edge of the upper wing surface. However on the upper wing surface leading edge apply the glue to the actual edge of the foam. See the image below to see how the wings are first attached to the bottom wing surface standing straight up.
Start by pressing the leading edge of the upper wing surface down onto the bottom surface of the wing and ensure the leading edges are flush. The foam buts up against the balsa half rib here. Work from the leading edge back and press the top wing surface onto the ribs. Use the inner-most rib as a guide. Note that the upper wing surface will be about 1mm short at the back this is normal. Hold the wing up and check that there are no twists in either wing. The bottoms should be flat. At this stage before the glue is completely dry you are still able to slightly twist the wing tips to straighten out any twists. Allow the airframe at least ½ hour to dry at this stage before continuing.
Slide the canopy in place and check that the rear part of the canopy touches the wing surface here. If it doesn t, press the foam down at this position to allow the canopy to sit down onto the wing surface at the rear. As the elevators will hinge upward, you will need to give the trailing edges of the wings a slight sand just enough to take the edges off the sheets and create a shallow bevel. Also sand the leading edges of the wings where the two sheets meet to round it off a little. You may also sand the base plate at the front where the canopy attaches. Before attaching the skids you may wish to use them to make a template if you have some spare 6mm Depron. They can then be replaced later if they become worn. Carefully attach the skids. Twist them sideways a little to slip over the front of the wing and then work them up the wing slowly bit by bit into place. You can choose whether to glue them in place or not. Not gluing them allows them to be replaced easily if damaged. But gluing them in place will keep them sturdy. Even if glued in place they can usually be carefully removed later. If you choose to glue them in place, don t put any glue on this side of the line where the canopy slides on.
Slide the canopy in place. It is designed to be a bit too tight and will need to be sanded back. Sand the wooden sides of the canopy with a sanding block until it slides in firmly. Glue on the fins. First hold them in place and mark with a pen where the glue needs to go. Apply glue and allow to dry before bringing the two parts together. Remember the un-sanded edges go inward. Place the end of the wing on the edge of a desk so the fin can be aligned flush with the bottom of the wing surface and align the leading edge with the leading edge of the wing. Glue the motor mount and geardrive in place ensuring that the locating strips of balsa slot into the holes in the Depron base plate. If using the recommended receiver, use the piece of double sided tape to attach the receiver as shown. Connect up the motor and servos and route the battery connector through the hole in the wing support into the battery bay. If using the recommended battery or similar battery these two foam pieces will position the battery correctly.
Test again that the canopy fits now that the motor and geardrive have been attached. The canopy slides in between the motor and gearshaft here to hold it in place. If it doesn t slide in easily, compress the foam with your fingers to make it a bit thinner. Attach the aileron surfaces with Blenderm Hinge Tape or a similar product. Run a length of hinge tape along the aileron surface and starting at the outer end attach the tape to the wing surface. Leave about 1 to 1.5mm gap for the aileron to swing upward. If the aileron touches the fin at any point in its swing, sand the end of the aileron down a bit. Blenderm 1.25cm Hinge Tape Set the trims on your transmitter to neutral and connect the battery to the receiver. Make sure all servos are moving in the correct direction and are centered. Put masking tape around the end of the fins as shown here. This will hold the elevator surfaces level with the upward line of the fin and automatically set the correct amount of up thrust on the ailerons as you attach the control linkages. With the elevators held in position by the masking tape, attach the control linkages as shown. Take the tape off before testing the elevator action.
The piece of string with a stiff waxed end is included with the kit can be used to thread through the holes in the skids. Hold the airframe up with the battery inserted and confirm that it balances level. If the ailerons are aligned with the bottom line of the fins and this balance test shows the balance point is correct then the plane will fly correctly. The kit is also supplied with a set of decal stickers. Note: The canopy forms part of the overall airfoil. Don t fly the plane without the canopy attached.
