Tips, Twists, and Turns Woodturning Videos Check out this link I found through the AAW s Segmented Woodturner s Club site. ey=0am13ud6hoipedeoyrwdkrhh xmdzxne1umujoexrhnxc&gid=15 This link goes directly to the Segmented tab listing various videos on Segmenting. The site has other tabs all relating to woodturning which include: Lathes, Beginning, Sharpening, Techniques, Projects, Bowls, Hollow Forms, Boxes Design, Decoration, Finishing, and Miscellany. These videos vary in length and by author. Ken Miller Dust Collection Problems? All - Here is a web site that has MORE than enough information on work shop dust collection AND PLANS for building your own cyclone separator. ne/index.cfm Richard Kuivila Editor s Note: Thanks for the heads up on this website, Richard. This site is very informative. I found out why I am having collection problems on parts of my system. Ken Librarian s Corner Many new offerings this month AAW 2010 Symposium DVDs; DVDs on the work of Myron Curtis, David Ellsworth, and Rude Osolnik; and several fascinating books on design, drying wood, finishing, and making toys that teach! Many thanks to the last minute Librarian stands-ins in January Stan and Mike. Along with Bob Olsen and Denise Newman, they were key to enabling us to serve our customer base. Several other members also jumped in to help, but in the rush of things I failed to capture names. Their efforts were also appreciated! We need extra help sometimes with the Library not all Librarians can make all meetings - so if you can, check with us during the busy times and we will likely be able to put you to work! We typically need at least four and preferably five people to run the operation. Please note that the cut-off for the Wait List is the Sunday evening before meetings. Dave Hawley - FRW Librarian Media Review This month s media review is of Jack Cox s book entitled Beyond Basic Turning. ISBN published in 1993, 256 pages and available in FRW s library. This book takes segmented turning to the next level with chapters covering Segmentation Principles, Design and Marking Out, Off-Center Design Considerations, Sawing, Sanding, Assembly, and Lathe-mounting Techniques, Turning Topics, and eleven detailed projects. These projects are an aide to illustrate what the book covers and include step-bystep procedures along with further discussions. The information contained in this book is explanatory. For instance, it gives a good understanding of how wood and segments move and the do s and don ts associated with movements in design. The information is also

4 explorative, in that numerous techniques (jigs and methods) for cutting, sanding, assembling, and mounting are given and discussed. This inevitably leads to many more possibilities incorporating some or all of each idea presented. I can t wait to broaden my turning possibilities with some of these ideas! Jack Cox s English origin is prevalent in his writing. Some of the terminology used gives pause to the reader, a hiccup as translation occurs. However, both the style and terminology of his writing are easy to get used to and navigate. My only real criticism of the book lies in how I tend to read books like this. It is written to be read from beginning to end and not to jump around, at least not within a particular chapter. It is difficult to see a picture or figure that is of interest and determine where discussion about it begins. I ended up saying to myself Okay, fine. I ll start from the beginning of the chapter and not skip forward.. Warning: This book is packed with loads of good info. Give yourself ample time to go through it all. Overall, I would give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars Ken Miller FRW Newsletter Editor Events of January Perpetual Turning January s Demo Pete Holtus demonstrated 3-sided lidded boxes before a packed crowd. Key aspects to successfully turning these sided boxes are 1) making an accurate layout on both ends, 2) turning the block round initially, 3) using larger turning tools such as a large roughing gouge to turn the off center turnings (produces less ridges that have to be hand sanded out later), and 4) give yourself a white background behind the turning so that the ghost image stands out. A sampling of 2, 3, and 4 sided boxes by Pete. Pete is discussing the finer points of three sided box turning. Shown here is the critical layout to determine offset points. Michael Roper brought in a Walnut hollow form for January s Perpetual Turning. Well, he had it brought in since he was enjoying Hawaii! Henry Williams held the winning raffle ticket. Pete is turning the initial round from box centerline and checking that round with his chisel. Sided boxes require hand sanding w/o the help of the wood turning. Pete is sanding the three sides being careful not to roll over the edges or ends. The ends will later be cleaned up to produce sharply defined edges. Thanks Pete for yet another great demonstration! Curt Vogt Ornament out of Sea Urchin and Ebony w/renaissance Wax Danny King Natural edge bowls out of Black Walnut w/ Sanding Sealer and wax finish 3 ½ x2 David Nittman Demonstration of technique to hold odd shaped pieces such as burls (shown) with hot melt glue and an oversized faceplate mounted bowl. There are differences in hot melt glue. For our purposes, a higher temperature, but more importantly, a more flexible (less brittle) glue is needed. He microwaves the bowl afterwards, softening the glue and allowing him to separate the turning from the mount. Clean up requires some picking and time. The upside is no markings on the bark side. Thanks, David, for sharing this mounting tip. David Nittman Worry Stone out of Walnut w/ wax finish. Page 7
