5 3 fixing manual board cutting & hole forming WORKING WIH POWER OOLS UAC Fibre Cement boards can be readily cut on site with power tools. For board cutting, power circular saw with diamond tipped blade can be used. For hole-forming, power drill fitted with hole-cutter or jig saw with tungsten blade is suitable. All power cutting operations should be carried out in a well ventilated environment and with good work safety practices. Other preferred board cutting methods and examples of hole-forming technique are listed below: BOARD CING HOLE-FORMING Suitable cutting methods include the use of: (a) Score and Snap knife (b) Hand guillotine (c) Handsaw (a) For small rectangular and circular holes (a) Score and Snap knife* Score and snap cutting is a fast and efficient method, using a tungsten-tipped score and snap knife. Scored edge Steps: Drill a series of holes around the perimeter of the hole Straight edge Steps: Preferably score from the face side of the board. Score against straight edge & repeat action to obtain sufficient depth for clean break (normally 1/3 of board thickness). Snap upwards to achieve break. Clean edges with a rasp if necessary. opening required. hen tap out the waste piece from the board face. ap gently to avoid damage to board. Ensure that board edges are properly and evenly supported. (b) For large rectangular openings for wall ventilators. b) Hand Guillotine* Board can be cut with a hand guillotine to produce clean straight edges. Steps: Mark line for cutting. Align the guillotine blade along the cut-off side of the line to allow for the thickness of the blade b) Handsaw A hand saw can also be used for general cutting operations such as for small cuts and notching. Saw cuts For notching, use a handsaw first and then score along back with a score and snap knife (as illustrated) and snap upwards. Clean rough edges with a rasp. hese items are available from UAC * Score around perimeter Saw cut to corners Steps: Start with scoring around the perimeter of the opening to sufficient depth with score and snap knife. Form a large round hole at the centre of the perimeter by drilling as shown above. hen saw-cut from the centre towards the corners of the rectangular opening. ap gently to remove waste pieces from face side. Clean rough edges and radius corners with a suitable rasp.

End joints of boards should not coincide with corners of openings such as doors or windows to reduce joint cracks due to frame movement ( figures 1 & 2 ). Where end joints occur, they should coincide with the centre line of a stud ( figure 3 ). Board layout where height b exceeds 400mm. Board layout where height a exceeds half of the wall height. 10 vistabord flexabord 8 flush jointed ceiling installation BOARD LAYO FRAMING Boards should be laid with their long sides at right angles to the framing structures as shown in figure 20. Framing Materials: imber or steel framing may be used. Kiln-dried timber should be chosen to minimise shrinkage. Cold formed light gauge steel section, preferably less than 1.2mm thick is recommended. Special Framing Design Considerations: Fix ceiling boards across joists, furring channel or battens. Boards should be laid out in a 'brick' or 'staggered' pattern so that adjacent end joints do not coincide. Figure 20: Board Layout Ensure that the end joints do not coincide with corners of openings (e.g. air conditioning outlets) as these joints may crack due to frame movement ( figure 21 ). Where end joints occur, they should be located on the centre line of a framing member as shown in figure 22. Boards should not be fixed to the underside of metal roof purlins or steel trusses directly. Preferably a suspended grid frame should be used. Boards should not be used as ceiling under a non-insulated metal roof. Generally, the minimum acceptable insulation requirement should be 50mm of mineral wool blanket below a layer of reflective foil. Boards should not be fixed directly to the underside of timber roof trusses or rafters. Preferably a timber batten frame should be used. Framing Requirements and Recommendations: For large areas, ceiling should be divided into bays not exceeding 10m x 7.5m ( figure 23 ). Figure 21: Board Layout Around Openings Expansion joint 1220 mm 7.5 metres max. 2440mm 10 metres max. Figure 23: Maximum Bay Size Board Figure 22: Board End Joint Detail Each bay should be able to move independent of adjacent bays and the surrounding building structures. o make allowance for this movement, an expansion joint should be formed at the perimeter of each bay. Framing structures (to which boards are fixed) must not continue across this expansion joint. Framing structure spacing for boards should not exceed 610mm centres.
11 vistabord flexabord 9 flush jointed ceiling installation (cont d) FRAMING (cont d) Framing Requirements and Recommendations (cont d) he earlier-mentioned framing requirements can be best achieved with the use of a Suspended Screw-up Metal Grid System. It employs a suspended cross rail to which furring channels are fixed. Figure 24 shows the detailing for this framing system at expansion joints. 14 12 appendix II Note: It is essential that tile fixing application be carried out in accordance with the tile adhesive manufacturer s instructions and recommendations though a typical tile fixing procedure is provided below. YPICAL ILE FIXING PROCEDURE It is essential that the board surface is completely free of dust, grease or other foreign matter, which may affect bonding performance, before it is tiled on. While it is not necessary to prime or seal the board surface before tiling, they must be wiped clean of dust, preferably with a damp cloth. Cleaning should be carried out just before the application of adhesive to ensure a dust-free surface. Spread adhesive with a notched spreader in a horizontal direction and in accordance with adhesive manufacturer s recommendations. Press tiles firmly into the adhesive to ensure no voids form behind the tile. Do not butt tiles closely together. Leave sufficient space (minimum 2mm) for compressible grout. Ensure that tiles do not overlap expansion joints in the backer boards. iles should be fixed at least 24 hours before grouting. Use only compressible grout. Board Nogging Wall iles Adhesive compound
