1 Tips & Tricks Bech slave I have a couple of these slaves mouted uder my workbech top to allow for easy clamp-free support of log stock for edge plaig. Each uit is basically a bracket that houses a stick that ca be exteded for board support whe ecessary, ad retracted whe ot i use. These slaves are simple to build, as show. Just make sure to use a strog hardwood such as maple or birch for the bracket, ad a eve stroger wood, such as rosewood or osage orage for the stick. After shapig the ceter block ad gluig it betwee the outer blocks, drill ad couterbore clearace holes i the outer blocks ad screw the bracket to the uderside of your bech. Make sure that the retracted stick is iset about 1/2" from the edge of the bech. Cosider moutig oe slave i the middle of your bech, ad oe at the far ed opposite the vise to accommodate boards of various legths. Ady Rae, Asheville, North Carolia SUPPORT STICK " Attach telescopig bech slave to uderside of bech to support boards. Cut a " rabbet i ceter block. Glue ad clamp 3 blocks together. 3 Tips Tips & & Tricks A helpful lift from I-beams risers It ofte helps to raise a workpiece up off the bech, especially whe you eed clamp access udereath. Although you ca sometimes just use thick boards as risers, I ve foud that I-beams work much better because you ca clamp them to the bechtop, the secure the workpiece to the top beam flage. This works perfectly, for example, whe you eed to clamp routig guides to a pael for dadoig or cuttig teos for a breadboard ed, as show i the drawig. Eve simple edge profilig is more easily doe o a secured workpiece, ad raisig the work meas you do t have to crouch at the bech. My risers spa the width of my workbech to allow easy clampig aywhere alog its legth. Made of plywood, they raise a workpiece about 7 iches off the bech, which works fie for most operatios. I screwed ad glued the pieces together, couterborig the screws to prevet possible damage to workpieces. Paul Athoy, seior editor I-beam risers raise work for comfort ad allow securig work to a bech with clamp access udereath. WORKPIECE 20

5 Tips Tips & & Tricks Pipettes hit the target I fid that whe I eed to eatly apply a thi glue or solvet, a plastic pipette is just the tool for the job. These squeezable lab dispesers, with their tiy tips, work great for targeted applicatios of thi or medium viscosity cyaoacrylate (CA) glue ( super glue ) whe fillig cracks or makig repairs. They re also perfect for dischargig a small stream of aphtha betwee a template ad workpiece to release double-faced tape securig the two. Ad if I eed to cococt a dye stai recipe, I ca use them to add carefully cotrolled drops of this ad that color to a sample mix. Pipettes are iexpesive, ad available from stewmac.com, as well as other olie sources. Bil Mitchell, Riegelsville, Pesylvaia Workpiece Pipette used to iject aptha to release double-faced tape. 7 Tips Tips & & Tricks CLASSIC TIP A shop-made lathe gauge I do a lot of spidle-turig at the lathe, ad fid myself turig sectios ad details to the same commo diameters time ad agai. Rather tha costatly resettig my calipers, I devised a gauge for these diameters, makig it from plastic lamiate, which is thi eough to slip ito parted areas ad i betwee beads. Makig a gauge like this is easy. Begi with a oversized scrap of plastic lamiate for safe hadlig. Lay out the ceters for the desired diameters alog a lie draw parallel to oe edge. Bore out the holes o the drill press, ad the saw through the ceterlie. Fiish up by trimmig the gauge to a coveiet size. Mark Pilser, Milwaukee, Wiscosi Drill holes i plastic lamiate; the bisect o saw. 24 Illustratio: Chris Glowacki
