1 Bamboo Shakers Jodi Carrigan, Zoo Atlanta Saw Screwdriver Hammer 1. Saw off ends of bamboo. 2. Punch a hole by hammering a screwdriver into one end and fill with seeds, Jell o, or other food items.

2 Plastic Coke Crates Disney s Animal Kingdom 1. Attach fire hose strip with clips. 2. Add fire hose to front to lessen item loss when fire hose is pulled and back of crate raises. 3. Attach front of crate to mesh with clips as well. 4. Fill with food or other items.

3 Fire Hose Bag Busch Gardens Tampa Materials Needed: Drill with ¼ inch drill bit Knife to cut hose 1 4 inch eyebolt for hanging 1 3 inch carriage bolt to secure the bottom inch stainless steel carriage bolts 12 stainless steel washers 12 stainless steel lock nuts 1 lock Fire hose 1. Decide how large you want bag to be. 2. Cut 4 pieces of hose to the desired length. These pieces will be secured in the middle, so cut them double the length of the overall desired height of the bag. 3. Lay the 4 pieces in an asterisk formation and secure all pieces together in the middle with the 3 inch carriage bolt. 4. Cut 2 3 more pieces of hose (the more pieces, the smaller the forage holes), 2/3 the length of the first 4 pieces. 5. One at a time, take each 2/3 piece and weave it through the asterisk, forming a circle with the 2/3 piece. You can bolt each hose overlap in place or every other one depending on how easy/difficult you want it to be to get the treats out. Also, you will affect the ease/difficulty of getting treats out of the bag by how far apart you space the 2/3 pieces within the asterisk. 6. When you are out of hose pieces, secure the top with the eye bolt and a wing nut (if you want to be able to easily open the bag to fill/clean) or a lock nut (if you have animals that are handy and may help you take the bag apart). If you use a lock nut, you can still fill the bag through the forage holes. 7. Once completed, fill with a variety of bedding to hold the treats in place so they don t all sink to the bottom. Then fill with food treats, browse, toys, etc. 8. Hang at various heights or leave loose.

4 Foraging Board Jodi Carrigan, Zoo Atlanta Drill Cutting board Astroturf 8 nuts, 8 bolts and 16 washers 1. Cut Astroturf to fit on cutting board. 2. Drill holes into Astroturf and cutting board and secure with nuts and bolts. 3. Cut off and grind down the ends of the bolts so that there are no sharp or raised ends. 4. Hang on outside or inside of mesh.

5 Kracor Keg in a Crate Plastic milk crate Chains to attach crate Keg (Kracor) or make your own (a closed cylindrical container with holes) 1. Fill keg with treats and place keg inside a milk crate. 2. Attach milk crate to cage so that all sides are enclosed. 3. The enrichment item provides two barriers and increased challenge to stimulate the animal, encourage foraging techniques and extend feeding times.

Attach seatbelt material and fasten a loop at the top with the nut, bolt and washer to allow for hanging. 3. Cover board with peanut butter, oatmeal or other food items and hang on outside of the mesh.

7 Paper Mache Devices Newspaper strips Water Flour Treats (small seeds, raisins, peanuts, etc.) Scents, flavors, spices as needed Description: 1. Paper Mache various plastic devices such as boomers, etc. 2. Then hide small food items within the layers of Mache, scent/flavor/spice paste mix or just provide plain. 3. Serves as task oriented, destructible enrichment.

8 PVC Square Feeder 4 PVC pipes 3 PVC elbows 1 three way T 1. Connect PVC pipes into a square with one T opening at end. 2. Keepers can place food/treats inside so that the animal will have to continually twist the square feeder in order to obtain reward inside.

9 PVC Cap Feeder (3) 2 + PVC caps 1 I bolt: o Diameter: 3/8 o Length: double ended snap hook Treats (popcorn, raisins, produce, Jell O, etc.) 1. The PVC cap feeder is placed outside of the enclosure with the double ended snap hook. 2. Caps are filled with treats to encourage foraging behavior.

10 Sandbox Feeder Plastic container Sand Fishing tool (PVC, browse, cardboard, etc.) 1. Attach a plastic container to cage front. 2. Fill with sand and place treats inside. 3. Give animal a tool to fish and forage for items.

11 Browse Hanger 2 3 strips of fire hose 1. Create a tightly woven fire hose hanger for browse. 2. Weave browse ends into spaces in fire hose, providing for a novel, task oriented browse provision.

12 Flintstone Wheel Feeder PVC pipe Donut/Tires Attachment hardware 1. Create a ~ 10ft long PVC pipe with donut/tire devices slid onto each end and held in place with PVC pegs. 2. Chain PVC to a tree in the exhibit. 3. Secure donuts on each end with pegs.

13 Greens Feeder 2 steel grill grates 2 4 metal clips (clevis shackles work best) 1 carbineer clip 1. Clip the two steel grill grates together with the greens inside. 2. The device should be very tightly packed so that the animals really have to work to acquire food.

14 Honey Log 1 log (approx. 18 ) 1 I bolt PVC dowels 1. The honey log can hold honey, molasses, spices, etc. Whole carrots can also be inserted in the log. 2. The dowels are more like caps to create a chamber for honey, etc. 3. The holes that are drilled through the log are one inch in diameter. 4. The dowel plugs should also be about one inch in diameter and fit very tightly.

15 Jell O Boards Polypropylene plastic block Jell O 1. Use scrap polypropylene plastic. 2. Fill holes (approximately one inch in diameter) with Jell O. 3. A tool must be used to obtain food treats from chambers. 4. You can also fill the board with juices and freeze.

18 Three Level Puzzle Feeder PVC (shorter length for pipes inside larger ones) 4 nuts 2 long screws Description: Inside the three PVC pieces are small, rotating sections of pipe. The animal will have to twist the inside pipes and line them up appropriately with the outside holes to retrieve treats. Hang feeder inside enclosure (on keeper door) so the holes face into the exhibit. Use with peanuts, raisins or other small treats.
