4 Introduction Minecraft, a sandbox construction game, has four game modes. And the survival variant (survival and hardcore) is by far the most interesting and challenging among the rest. This is why we compile 30 of the most useful survival tricks and tips to make your struggle for survival a little easier and wiser. It s good to know that this guide is not only for the new players but also for the ones who are going pro. Survival Tip # 1 NEVER DIG STRAIGHT DOWN Perhaps the most common and cliché tip of all time, and the golden rule of mining is to never dig straight down. Why? Because you have no idea what s behind the block that you are digging/mining. Generally, that is a risk we are all willing to take, but being on top of the block you re a digging, your character is taking the risk of falling to deadly heights, or worse lava. Is it safe to dig up then? No. The same reason as why you shouldn t be digging straight down, lava or falling blocks like sand or gravel can fall on you which in return can burn or suffocate your character. You will also need ladder to travel vertically which is a waste of resources. The safest way of travelling underground is to dig or mine a preferably wide staircase. Survival Tip # 2 ALL WOODS ARE FUEL Coal is one of the most practical fuel you can have for your furnace. It is not the most effective, but its availability and game purpose makes it the ideal fuel. However, coal can still ran out if you don t spend much time underground. The great alternative to coal is charcoal. To create one, you just have to smelt a wood log on the furnace. Wood, however, can be crafted into bunch of things so you might want to save it for better uses. 5 trapdoors, signs, and doors, you should keep in mind that these things can also be used as fuels. In fact, all wood- related items can be used as furnace fuels including saplings! Survival Tip # 3 ENDERMEN PERSONALITIES Endermen, the thin, alien- looking, black hostile mobs in Minecraft are a bit tricky to fight. These mobs can bash you with a random block that they pick up and are immune to arrows due to their teleportation skills. These hard- to- fight mobs are not naturally aggressive to players and only attack if you look at them. To counter these passive- aggress behaviour, players can wear a pumpkin in their head. Also, endermen turns back to passive when touched by water. If you find yourself surrounded and are being attacked by these unholy things, jump in to the nearest body of water and wait to recover your health. Endermen hate water and take damage upon contact, use this advantage in fighting them. To avoid encountering an enderman, go outside when it s raining. Visit for more Minecraft books 5

6 Survival Tip # 4 DEFUSING WITH WATER Explosions are one of the most unforgiving thing in the game. These explosions can be caused by TNTs, charged and uncharged creepers, Ghast fireballs, and the likes. In order to defuse the block- breaking ability of explosions, you must submerge it to water. This is especially useful when someone primed a TNT in front of you or you are fighting with a creeper. Note that this method does not take away entity damage, so players can still get harmed and blown away. What this method do is protect the surrounding blocks from being destroyed. Survival Tip # 5 SPIDERS CAN BE BLOCKED When creating balconies on your home, one major problem is the spiders climbing ability. This ability of theirs can be countered by adding an offset of block just above the wall. Spiders can climb vertically but they can t left the wall and stick to the roof. Also remember that spiders have a body size of one block. This gives them the ability to crawl unto 1 x 1 holes so be sure to cover everything. On a different tip, spiders can t climb ice blocks. 7 Survival Tip # 6 INSTANT COOKED FOOD Killing or slaying an animal for their food gives a raw version of their meat. These raw foods fill only a small amount of hunger as compared to their cooked counterpart. To avoid the menial task of cooking all your raw meat, equip yourself a flint and steel or enchant your weapon with fire aspect. Animals that are killed through fire drop their cooked meat instead of their raw. Note that the death blow should be caused by the fire itself, having a mob on fire while dealing a physical death blow doesn t count as a fiery death. Survival Tip # 7 FIRE IS WOOD S ENEMY Similar to the tip that all wood items can be used as fuel, almost all wood- related blocks can also burn. With an exception of few wood blocks such as chests. 8 circumstances, to create a fireplace inside a wooden room or a house. The only way to do it is to give the fire source a sufficient distance of any wood related blocks. Survival Tip # 8 LIGHT LEVEL Different light source emit different light level, which in return affect different things. As we know, lit blocks will prevent mobs from spawning in a certain distance. Glowstones, Redstone Lamps, and Jack o lanterns emit a light source equal to daylight which in turn effectively repel mobs and grow crops. Redstone torches emit a dim light that is not enough to effectively repel mobs but enough for mushrooms to grow. These torches are perfect for underground mushroom farms or mob grinders. 9 Survival Tip # 9 CAVE EXPLORATION TIPS Cave exploring is fun and dangerous. Before starting on an expedition, make sure you bring a few wood, lots of food, and a bunch of torches. Naturally generated caves can confuse players and make them lost. To counter this, make an SOP to place all your torches in only one side of the cave. In this way, you can efficiently track where you came from in the event that you want to go home. Survival Tip # 10 IRON OUTWEIGHS GOLD Different kind of materials have different values. In itself, diamond is the most precious material in the game due to its rarity and durability when crafted into a tool, armor, or weapon. However, aside from the in- game content it possesses, diamond isn t as important as wood and iron. Wood can be crafted into a plethora of things from basic to essential. Iron, on the other hand, let s you craft a series of important things such as pistons, shears, buckets and so on. Iron pickaxe can also mine all kinds of blocks with an exception of obsidian. Iron tools also mines fast, second only to diamond and are more common than diamond. In the end, save your diamonds for creating overpowered things like pickaxe that will only be used for obsidian mining, a set of diamond armor, and a diamond sword. The rest should fall to iron. 10 Survival Tip # 11 PROTECT THOSE VILLAGERS Villagers are good merchants, they also add a good ambience to the game. However, these NPCs are prone to zombie attacks and once that there are less than two exists in one village, your village is sure to fall. It is advisable to protect those villagers by creating a wall around their village or simply by blocking their house s door. Keep in mind that two villagers can breed to increase the population. Don t ask me how they do it though. For a back- to- back tip, zombie villagers can be cured with golden apples! Survival Tip # 12 SWORD BLOCKS EXPLOSIONS As we know, sword can block attacks and absorbs damage that can save your life. But did you know that swords can block explosions too? This is useful when fighting against creepers, Ghast fireballs, TNT cannons, and the likes. By holding down the block button while equipping a sword you can cut the Visit for more Minecraft books 10

11 explosion damage by almost half. This doesn t apply to miscellaneous fire damage and fall damage, and you can still get knocked back by the explosion too. Survival Tip # 13 BUNNY JUMPING While sprinting and running can quickly get you out of harm s way, bunny jumping can get you out of there faster. Bunny Jumping can be done by sprinting and holding down the jump button. This will make your character jump every time it hits the ground. This method is effective when fighting against fast and range mobs like skeletons. This method does comes with a price, as it drains your hunger bar more. Visit for more Minecraft books 11

12 Survival Tip # 14 ONE WAY TRIP When going to the Nether, it is best to bring along some spare obsidian blocks and a flint and steel. Your Nether portal can be destroyed or closed down by a Ghast fireball which in turn can trap you inside the place. By bringing spare blocks and the flint and steel tool, you can secure yourself a safe return among the living. One other way is to case or house the portal with cobblestone blocks to make sure it is protected. Survival Tip # 15 WATER CAN SAVE YOU Bringing a bucket of water when mining is a good advice. Water can easily extinguish lava in case you run on some. Waterfalls can also be an effective way of travelling vertically from pits and ravines which saves you from creating ladders. 13 Survival Tip # 16 ALWAYS PLAY WITH SOUNDS Playing in mute can miss out several opportunities that playing with sounds can offer. Cave exploring for example; when facing a dead end your first decision is to go back, however once you hear a zombie, bat or spider sound on the other side of the stone cave, it is a hint that there might be an opening or perhaps a continuation of the cave on the other side. Playing with sounds can also make you aware of the impending dangers especially when it comes to creepers or TNTs. Survival Tip # 17 EMERGENCY SHELTERS When out and away from home during night time, it is best to be well equipped. If however you are not well equipped and cannot take the risk of dying, your only defense is to make an emergency shelter. Emergency shelters vary widely on your biome and on your spare time. One example is to dig a 3- block deep hole, jump on it, and cover the top with dirt. Yes, you will be submerged in darkness, but hey, at least you ll survive for the night. 14 Survival Tip # 18 FOODS ARE EVERYWHERE If your character ever goes hungry, or your life is running low, always remember that you can find food everywhere. Passive mobs like chickens, cows, and pigs drop their respective meats, leaves present a certain percentage of dropping an apple. In the wild, you can also find a bunch of pumpkins which you can turn into a pie. You can also destroy tall grass to get seeds, planting it will result in wheat which later results in bread. You may also craft a fishing rod and fish in the nearby river. If you are really desperate, kill some zombies and eat their flesh! Eating their flesh will replenish your hunger bar but will inflict a hunger status for several seconds. This effect can be countered by drinking milk. Visit for more Minecraft books 14

15 Survival Tip # 19 PLANT FIRST To avoid getting hungry during your first days, or to avoid hunting out all the livestock in the area, always plant your seed early. Wheat seeds take a while to mature, so planting them on the very first day is a good advice. If you re lucky to find a melon or a pumpkin, turn it into seeds and plant it to reproduce. Melons and pumpkins are good food sources too. Survival Tip # 20 KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR HUNGER Hunger can affect your gameplay greatly. For the first two minecraft days, hunger is not a concern. Keep in mind that when the hunger meter falls to zero, the player starts losing health similar to the wither poison status. Health generation also stops when hunger bar reaches 85% and below. Sprinting will also be disabled below 30% hunger. Note that eating raw meat has 30% chance of causing hunger status which drains your hunger bar while eating zombie flesh has 80% of inflicting the said status. 16 Survival Tip # 21 CROUCHING IS YOUR BESTFRIEND AGAINST HEIGHTS Long heights can cause major damage to your character, or even death. To keep yourself from falling unintentionally, take advantage of the crouch button. Crouching while on the edge will keep your character from falling. Crouching while travelling on ladders will stop your character on that specific spot, allowing you to shoot bows or just look at the view. Survival Tip # 22 SNEAKING IN MULTIPLAYER Sneaking in multiplayer is hard because of the fact that your name will be shown floating above your head even if you are covered in blocks. To hide your name in multiplayer, use the crouch button while behind a 2- block tall wall. To sneak without crouching, hide behind chests and signs. Visit for more Minecraft books 16

17 Survival Tip # 23 A CREEPER ALONE IS NO MATCH When you see a SINGLE creeper coming at you with no other mobs in sight, don t be scared. Creeper can be killed with 4 regular strikes from your stone sword. Just spam your attack against the poor green fella and it won t have the chance to detonate. Remember that a creeper has 10 hearts of life and has the same amount of damage on all difficulty settings. A charged creeper has double the damage of the regular creeper and covers almost twice the area, but still has the same amount of hearts. A stone sword can kill a creeper with 4 hits, while iron and diamond can kill it with 3 regular hits (critical strikes not included). Just be sure none will sneak up on you. 18 Survival Tip # 24 (PC ONLY) IGNORE THE ACHIEVEMENTS Achievements are a great way to learn the game when your just starting. It s also great when you like to complete everything as a perfectionist. In PC however, achievements get erased down without warning. By simply adding mods or updating minecraft version can erase your achievement. So take my advise and don t invest on it. Survival Tip # 25 VERTICAL MOVEMENT WILL NEVER SLOW YOU DOWN Eating, drinking a potion, blocking, and drawing a bow can significantly slow your movement down. When escaping an angry mob, eating or drinking a potion while running is a bad idea. Fortunately, this rule does not affect vertical movement such as swimming up/down, or going into ladders. This is an effective escape route as you can eat while climbing up a ladder without even slowing down. Visit for more Minecraft books 18

19 Survival Tip # 26 FINDING SADDLES There is no recipe for crafting saddles, and there will never be any. If you re having trouble finding it inside dungeons, try the chest inside the NPC blacksmith house. Note that unlike horses, placing a saddle on a pig is permanent. The only way to get it back is to kill the poor piggy. Survival Tip # 27 BOWS ARE STRONG THAN SWORDS As illogical as it seems, a fully drawn bow deals more damage than diamond swords. Fully drawn bow shots are displayed with glitter particles. Critical strikes on diamond swords are an exception. However, keep in mind that bows and swords can have different enchanting properties and swords have the ability to block while drawing bows just slow you down. Visit for more Minecraft books 19

20 Survival Tip # 28 CREEPERS HATE COBWEBS AND CATS Dealing creepers without being properly prepared can have devastating result. Some methods of dealing with them is by submerging them to water. But did you know that creepers inside cobwebs have a very slow detonation countdown which is more than enough to kill them using a wooden sword or with bare hands. Ocelots also repel these green creatures, so taming a cat and placing it on your front door is a good advise. Survival Tip # 29 FISHING ON A RAINY DAY Fishing can be frustrating when you don t know how to time it right. To increase the chance of catching a fish, try it on a rainy day. Fishing on a rainy day has an average chance of catching a fish every 15 seconds, as opposed to cloudy and clear sky weather. On another fishing tip, the fishing rod only has 65 uses before it will break and can hook any entity, it can also trigger pressure plates or knock paintings. Visit for more Minecraft books 20

21 Survival Tip # 30 USING THE RIGHT TOOL Woods can be harvested by using any tool or even your hands, however some blocks like stone and ore require a specific tool to be mined. When using the wrong tool to do a task, the durability of the tool is decreased by 2 instead of 1. When mining, it is best to switch to your shovel or your fist when digging dirt or gravel other than sticking to your pickaxe, as it might break your pickaxe much faster than stone.
