1 INTRODUCTION THE DIAL-UP NOISE It could be a website that just immortalizes the sound along with info about what it is (why was there even that sound?) Kind of like a shrine to this antiquated facet of the internet. I could make it super-90 s-early-internet vibe. This isn t meant to be serious, hopefully it ll be kinda funny and nostalgic. The dial up noise is something that I have fuzzy childhood memories of. It d be kinda funny to preserve it on the web, because it s advances in the internet that made it obsolete and forgotten. This wouldn t be an essential or highly functional website, but rather something fun and silly that you might scroll through for a couple minutes as a distraction break. Components: the sound, visual representation of the sound, information about what it is, maybe some historical context about the texhnology that nessecitated it and made it obsolete.

4 USER STORIES USER 1 User 1 is a year old person who lived through the early stages of the internet. They might find this site while reading Buzzfeed s 10 Things Kids These Days Don t Even Remember over their morning coffee. The article reminds them of the primitive and awesome dial-up noise that used to signal a connection being made. They feel nostalgic and google Dial Up Sound and see this site listed. They click on it and listen to the sound and it takes them back to a time when they were logging onto AOL maybe to instant-message a friend or check Friendster. First, they play the sound and maybe they hum along. They scroll through the history tab and onto the science page. The information helps give them a better understanding and appreciation for this artifact from the past. This user sees the share tab and social media connections but is less interested in that and so they head over to the preservation tab. This user reads about how and why this quirky artifact is an important piece of internet history. Maybe they sign a petition to add the sound to an important artifacts list. Perhaps they download the sound file under downloads to play for their co-workers. For some reason it s fun to share nostalgia and User 1 is all about it. They re the kind of user who flips through most of the tabs on the site just to check out what s there. They re killing time with this fun blast from the past. USER 2 User 2 is a 13 year old person who has grown up with Amazon Prime and Instagram. They don t remember the origins of the internet and don t really care when their parents try to explain how lucky they are to be growing up in a time with holograms and 3D printing. User 2 takes a break from sleeping in Algebra one day to flip through Facebook on their phone. One of their friends posted a link to this site on their wall. What even is a dial up? they comment back before clicking the link. The mobile site opens on their phone and User 2 is blown away by how computers used to talk to eachother like robots! User 2 listens to the sound and flips over to the history page. They give it a brief skim and then flip to the connect and share section. User 2 thinks this is a quirky cool anachronism like typewriters and Polaroid cameras. They share the soundbyte to their twitter and instagram with a caption about how weird the 90 s must have been. Maybe they re inspired enough by the sound to try to incorporate it into their chillstep tracks they make and upload to soundcloud.

These will cycle through like artworks on a museum website. General idea: really clean, widespaced text, airy leading. Whitespace. Really minimal colors, maybe just grey and white. Very much inspired by simple musuem websites.

7 DESKTOP DESIGN IDEA 2 General idea: trendier/more current take on the museum website paradigm. use of colors, gradients, much more tumblr-y internet art-y vibe. less neutral, more tied to a time. different navigation strategy. hovering over these opens a menu background will some kind of visual representation of the sound, more abstract than sound waves, taking advantage of vibrant RGB colors Abel Open Sans
