1 100 Fundraising Ideas 1. Gumball Lottery: Fill a gumball dispenser with gum and plastic ball containers with vouchers good for days off, additional break time, privilege parking, or any other item of value. 2. Pennies Collection: They re getting rid of them and so should you. Place penny jars around the office and have people empty their pockets and coin purses of pennies. 3. Bottle Drive: Place a box near the soda machines to collect returnables for money. Hold a neighborhood bottle drive or place a container at the local redemption centre for donations. 4. Social Media Challenge: Ask employees to create a Facebook page to bring awareness to the Shelter House cause and see who can get the most followers or likes. Have people start a tweet chain talking about Shelter House and see who can get it retweeted the most OR ask employees to reach out to their networks for pledges, funds or other support. Pin pictures, write blogs etc. Social Media is a world of fun and opportunities. See if your company will match every dollar raised through these channels. 5. Bowl-a-Thon: Participants collect pledges and then bowl a set number of games. Set a per-person minimum ($50?) for each participant. 6. Car Wash: A few buckets, sponges, some mild dish detergent, soft towels, water and lots of elbow grease is all it takes to turn a few spare hours into extra cash. Prices can range from $2-$5 or ask for donations. Three volunteers per car is the rule of thumb. 7. Rent-a-Manager: Associates make donations based on jobs they would like their manager to perform for one hour. Have a list of acceptable tasks to choose from. 8. Carnivals: Hold a carnival in your store s parking lot. Provide games, entertainment, etc. with all proceeds benefiting Shelter House. 9. Workshops and Classes: Have several speakers and/or chefs donate their time to teach you and your colleagues about how to waste less food, make creative meals from
2 food that would otherwise go to waste or other food- and hunger-related issues. Create a stamp passport for each workshop people participate in. 10. Casual Day: For a donation, employees are allowed to dress casually on a specified day. Shelter House can provide logo buttons/stickers for participating employees. 11. Pirates of the Office: Have associates dress up as robbers or pirates one day a week and collect pocket change from employees or customers. 12. Gala: Find a host location with excellent space and viewing possibilities, such as a local country club. Find 7-10 chefs who will donate their time and food. Sell tables at $500 per round table of 8-10 people. The event can be a formal night out with an opportunity to taste several types of food, possibly from different countries. 13. Coin Collections: Creative ways of coin collecting really add up. Attach umbrellas or festive canisters to your cash registers or put Shelter House collection cans around the office. 14. Airplane Toss: Section off part of your parking lot into squares. Put prizes in each square and sell registration forms that customers or emloyees later turn into a paper airplanes. Pick a busy time of day and have participants toss their paper airplanes to win the prizes on each square, OR you can see which airplane will fly the farthest or stay up in the air the longest. 15. Comedy Night: Have a comedian perform. Sell tickets for the event and give a percentage to Shelter House. 16. Photo Contest: Pick a theme and create divisions (i.e. amateur, professional and photos taken by children). Establish an entry fee and allow customers or employees to vote by putting donations in corresponding jars. The winners are determined by the total amount raised in their jar. 17. Cookbook Sales: Get associates, friends and family to contribute some of their favorite recipes and compile a Shelter House cookbook. Ask local celebrities to participate (i.e. the mayor, local television and radio broadcasters, athletic coaches, and others whose names are well-known to the community).
3 18. Corporate/Friend Match: See if your company or your friends will match donations you raise. 19. In-house Movie: Host a movie night. Pick a movie everyone can enjoy or pick a theme. Don t forget the popcorn and other movie snacks. 20. Mystery Box Challenge: Got some aspiring gourmands? Purchase some items and see what people can prepare from their mystery box. Focus on food that would otherwise go to waste or that people who need food assistance must utilize. Have a panel of judges take the food and vote on the best one. 21. Coin Feet: Stick double-sided tape in a line and have people stick their loonies and toonies to the tape. See how long you can make the line. Compete against different classes or departments to see who can create the longest line of coins or set a finish line and see who can get there first. Be creative: run the tape along stairs, around posts and up walls. 22. Progressive Dinner: Host a dinner party serving each course in a different department or class. Each is responsible for preparing the food. Use food that would otherwise have gone to waste and use the opportunity to discuss food waste in Thunder Bay. Keep portions small so that everyone can make it through the meal. 23. Counting On You: Participants guess the quantity of jelly beans, paper clips, marbles, coins, M&Ms, etc. Participants pay to enter the counting contest and the winner gets a prize. 24. Pie-throwing Contest: Auction off pies (made in a thin paper plate and topped with whipped cream) to be thrown at individuals. Managers and teachers make good targets. 25. Block Party: Hold a sidewalk BBQ to sell hotdogs, burgers, chips and soda. Get vendors to donate to the event. 26. Craft Sales: Rent space to creative artists in your community. Charge a flat fee for each local artist and crafts person to exhibit and sell their handmade items. Ask each participant to donate one item, then raffle or auction them off to raise additional funds.
4 27. Dance Marathon: A continuous, multi-hour event where participants raise funds through pledges. This event blends dancing, music, games, food and a variety of entertainment into one experience where can you raise a LOT of money. 28. Play Day: Host a day of field events such as a 5K run, an obstacle course, a tugof-war, and carry the coach. 29. Dessert-tasting Parties: Ask customers and associates to make a small contribution to try different desserts and concessions. Coffee and tea also can be sold at this event. 30. Gift-wrapping: During holidays (Christmas, Mother's Day, Father s Day, etc.) set up a gift-wrapping table. Charge a set fee or take donations. 31. Jail and Bail: Involve the local police department. The arrested must call friends to raise funds to be set free. They must raise a certain amount of money to post bail. Participants also can be jailed in your store. 32. Rolls of Money: Attach an empty coin roll to every associate s check on payday and ask them if they would turn it back in to Shelter House when they fill it up. Start small and work your way up! 33. Pancake Breakfast: Host a public breakfast, charging a set fee for the meal. Have managers and directors cook for the staff 34. Popcorn Sale: Sell popcorn in the afternoon. Get some different flavours to sprinkle on top. (Buy air-popped corn to keep costs lower.) 35. Quarter Mile: Collect enough toonies and loonies to stretch them a quarter mile through a store or parking lot. You can try to do this for a mile as well! 36. Recycling: Aluminum cans can be collected year-round and proceeds from the recycling centre can be donated to Shelter House. 37. Soda Floats: Sell root beer or soda floats for $ Round-up: Ask customers to round up their change from the cost of their purchases. If something costs $1.10 ask them to give the remaining 90 cents to Shelter House.
5 39. Scavenger Hunt: Each team collects pledges to participate. The team that finds all the clues first wins the grand prize. Have first-, second- and third-place prizes, and a token gift for each participant. 40. Sell Messages in School Papers or Company Newsletters: Parents may want to wish their son or daughter a happy birthday. Students may want to put in a funny photo. Co-workers might use the space to advertise items for sale or to thank someone for a job well done. 41. Shaved Head, Mustache or Beard: The store manager challenges associates to raise a predetermined amount of money by a certain date. If the associates succeed, the manager must shave his/her head, mustache or beard. 42. Cook-off: Have associates bring their favorite dish. At lunch, charge associates a small fee to sample the food. Have everyone vote for the food they liked best and award the winning chef! 43. Bake Sale: Collect baked goods and host a bake sale at your store, office, lobby or school. 44. Potluck lunch: Have everyone bring their favourite dish, along with copies of their recipe. Employees make a donation to eat lunch and copies of the recipes are sold or auctioned. 45. Spirit Chains: Have each homeroom at a local school sell paper links for 10 cents. The links are assembled together in giant chain. Use school colours. Homerooms compete for Most Spirit. Provide incentives for winning homeroom. 46. Sports Days: Have a putt-putt golf tournament, a football skills contest, a basketball shoot-out or other sports event. Participants pay an entry fee for the contest. 47. Store-to-Store Competition: Challenge another store in your community or create a fundraising competition between departments in your store. The losing department agrees to cook lunch for the winners or to dress like clowns for a day 48. Super Bowl Party: Have a party, charge admission, and have people bring lots of food. Hold a raffle to raise additional funds. To make it more interesting, dress as your favorite player or make it mandatory to wear football clothing for entry. The same ideas can be adapted to other playoffs.
6 49. Product Proceeds: Offer proceeds from a certain product purchase to Shelter House. This could be a specialty item like a Cookie of the Month, a new sandwich or items you always carry. Or consider offering all proceeds from a certain day to Shelter House. Don t forget to advertise that customers' purchases for that product or day will be donated. 50. Treasure Chest: Fill a chest with donated prizes and sell keys to open the chest. Make sure to sell all the keys before participants try and open the lock. 51. Trike Race: Adults race tricycles. Get store managers to participate. Have them wear funny costumes and come up with silly names. Have people place their bids with half of the proceeds going to the winner and half to Shelter House. 52. Weight-Lift-a-Thon: Participants get pledges for lifting larger and larger weights. 53. Yard Sale Saturdays: Section off part of your parking lot and sell spaces for a yard sale. 54. Three-on-three Basketball Tournament: Put together a competition. Have players pay to enter and ask for donations from people coming to watch. 55. Pitch-a-thon: Rent a radar gun and measure how fast people can pitch, throw or shoot. Ask local sports celebrities to come join you and have people try and beat their records. 56. Mini Golf Tournament: Involve your local mini golf venue. Have competitions at different holes, like having to use different non-clubs to putt your ball or answering poverty trivia. 57. Poker Tournament: Put on your poker face and host a game night. Or have popup games happen at lunch times. Don t like poker? Play Uno, Phase 10 or another card game. 58. Casino Night: Bring some blackjack, craps and roulette tables and have employees volunteer to deal. All proceeds for the night go to Shelter House. 59. Skate-a-Thon: Have the use of a skating rink donated for a couple of hours. Participants get sponsors and individuals to pledge for the hours or laps they skate. Have a concession stand to raise additional funds.
7 60. Pub Quiz Night: Create 8-10 rounds of 10 questions each. Don t forget to put interesting food/shelter questions into some of the rounds. Teams of four work to answer questions and the team with the most points for all the rounds wins. Teams pay to enter. This can be held at someone s home or in a common space. Don t forget to have some snacks and beverages for people to nibble on while they play. 61. Board Games: Ask people to bring in board games. People can pay per person, per hour to play. Provide snacks and drinks for sale. 62. Photo-scanning Booth: Have a volunteer scan people's old, hardcopy photos on to a computer for them. 63. Hired Hand for a Day: Auction off time to mow lawns, clean out garages, babysit, etc. 64. Rubber Duck Race: Sell ducks to participants by writing their name and phone number on the bottom. Have them race in a pond or pool, and the first one at the finish line wins. Makes sure to collect all the other ducks afterwards and use waterproof ink. 65. Silly Hat/Vest: Pass a silly hat/vest around the store from one associate to another. Set a minimum in donations that must be collected in order for the associate to pass it on to the next person. 66. Mini Regatta: Have teams create boats from cardboard and other materials, and race the boats on a pond or pool. Award prizes for fastest boat, least likely to sink, most creative, etc. Teams can pay for entry, for a mandatory package of basic materials, or for extra, specialty materials. 67. Bingo Tournament: Great for all ages. Pay per card and have prizes donated for people who win. 68. Worst Hair Picture Contest: Have people bring in pictures of hairdos from their earlier years. People can pay to enter or to vote on Worst Hairdo. 69. Seed Sale: Ask a local nursery to donate seeds and sell them to aspiring gardeners in the spring. 70. Bulb Drive: Ask a local nursery to donate bulbs and sell them in the fall.
8 71. Etsy sale: Set up a store on Etsy to sell homemade crafts. Have everyone donate something. 72. Softball Game: Set up teams within your store or challenge another store team. Charge an entry fee to play. All proceeds go to Shelter House. 73. Guess That Baby: Bring in baby pictures and have people pay to guess who the babies are. The Person with the most correct wins a prize. 74. Ice Cream Bar: Create a bar with all the fixings. See if you can get a local grocery store to donate all the food. 75. Pizza Lunch: Order pizza for lunch and donate the lunch money you would have used to Second Harvest. Pizza can be purchased by a manager or everyone can pitch in a few bucks. 76. Karaoke Idol: Who has the best singing voice, or the worst? Get into it! Have teams perform songs together and award prizes for best dressed. Pay to enter or pay per song. 77. Recycled-food-container Fashion Show: Get some creative people to design clothes made of only recycled materials. 78. Battle of the Bands: Bring out your inner rock star. Compete for the glory of the best band. Pay to enter and to watch the performance. 79. Office Murder Mystery: There are a lot of pre-created stories online. Give everyone in the office a character and give out clues each day. Host a lunch or dinner at the end where the killer is revealed. Pay to play, guess and get extra clues. 80. Clue: A spin-off of the popular game. Give out characters and clues throughout the week. Pay to play, guess and get extra clues. 81. Silly String Shootout: Auction cans of silly string to be sprayed at managers. 82. Chili Cook-off: Have people bring in their best chili recipes and compete for the glory of Best Chili. Pay to enter and to eat. Great opportunity for a team lunch or open it up to the public and host it in your lobby or parking lot for the community.
9 83. Silent auction: Have people donate bought or made items for people to bid on. Proceeds go to Shelter House. 84. Beverage Cart: Everyone needs a little pick-me-up in the middle of the day. Get a cart with coffee, hot chocolate, cider or other beverages and walk through your office or school. Decorate the cart and ask people to purchase the drinks. Be creative: drinks can be mocktails or cocktails. 85. Payroll Deduction: Ask if your company will take off a set amount from every pay cheque and donate it to Shelter House Dollars a Day: Get people to pledge to eat for only $3 a day, for 1 week. 87. o-grams : Can be candies, songs or cards. Pay to send people o-grams. 88. White Elephant Gift Exchange: Hold a party where people donate wrapped gifts and pay to participate. Each person may open one gift or pay to steal someone else's gift. 89. Tacky Tie Contest: Ask people to wear their tackiest ties. Pay to enter or pay not to enter. Pay to vote. 90. Video Game Challenge: Pick a game everyone knows like Mario Kart or Dance Dance Revolution and have people play against each other. Have semi-final and final competitions. Pay to play. Winner gets a prize. 91. Sell Raffle Tickets: Shelter House s Dollars for Shelter raffle tickets are on sale from September to December. 92. Pajama Day: We ve all heard of Casual Days, when you can wear jeans, but sometime would you rather wear your sweats. Pay to come dressed to work in the most comfortable clothes you own. 93. Fitness Goals: Have colleagues sponsor you to lose weight, run a race or ride your bike. 94. Disco Party: Hold a disco party. Dress up and give awards for the best costume. Pay for tickets, drinks and food. Have a dance moves competition.
10 95. Public Speaker: Ask an expert in food waste, hunger or homelessness in Canada come and speak to your colleagues. Need ideas on who to invite? We ve got plenty. 96. Soap Box Derby: Have colleagues form teams and make race cars to race down a hill. Prizes for fastest, most creative design, etc. Pay to participate. 97. Volunteer for the Day: Come join us for a truck ride-along, food sorting or other awesome volunteer opportunities. Ask us for more details. 98. Guac-off: See who can whip up the best guacamole. Pay to participate, taste and judge. 99. Photo Scavenger Hunt: Make a list of things to photograph (like 4 people in a phone booth or sitting in the back of a cop car) and give employees a week to collect all these pictures. Pay to play. Prizes for first team to finish and best photos Share a Meal: Get special permission to use the office kitchen to create a meal for people at a local social service agency. Deliver the meal and share it with people in need in your neighbourhood.
