1 MODULE DESCRIPTOR TITLE Screenwriting (long form) SI MODULE CODE CREDITS 20 LEVEL 6 JACS CODE P313 SUBJECT GROUP Media Arts DEPARTMET MAC MODULE LEADER Annie Watson MODULE STUDY HOURS (based on 10 hours per credit) Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities Placement (if applicable) Independent Guided Study MODULE AIM Total umber of Study Hours To further develop your script-writing and story development skills with a view to producing a selling package, typically consisting of a treatment, synopsis and sample scenes, which, in the best cases, may be suitable for submission to agents and production companies. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module you will be able to: 1. Understand further aspects of how meaning in long form fiction is produced. 2. Explore a longer story idea through research and development. 3. Produce professionally appropriate proposals and treatments. 4. Apply critically and theoretically informed criticism to your own work and that of others.

2 IDICATIVE COTET Typically, over the course of the module, you will explore, through scripts, theory and moving image clips, the different elements that make up the craft of long-form screenwriting. You will apply this learning to your own ideas in order to structure an original story up to a treatment stage, which, along with sample scenes, will provide a professional package potentially suitable for industry submission. You will be encouraged to identify areas of research within your own story idea, which may be theoretical, cultural or historical and, through self-directed learning, gather evidence that authenticates your story, and helps to place your screenplay within the wider world of film audiences. The importance of planning, structuring and understanding the professional context of the writer will be enforced by the production of proposals and treatments. LEARIG, TEACHIG AD ASSESSMET - STRATEGY AD METHODS Illustrated weekly lectures and seminars with visual presentations, research tasks, ideas development sessions and discussions will allow you to explore a number of different approaches to screenwriting. A visiting lecture from an industry insider will provide a master-class in screenwriting. You will undertake short exercises, which relate to seminar discussions. These exercises will be presented and reviewed informally by the group and tutor. You will receive an indicative mark and written feedback for your submission of your first draft treatment. This will be followed up with a personal tutorial, providing verbal feedback and the chance to explain how you can improve the treatment during the remainder of the module.

3 ASSESSMET TASK IFORMATIO o. Short Description of SI Code EX/CW/PR Weighting % Word Count or Exam Duration 1 Draft Treatment CW 20% C.1500 words 2 Treatment & sample scenes.
