Aims and Objectives Aim: This course aims to develop learner s ability to visualize and communicate engineering and three dimensional objects. Topics covered are orthographic projection, auxiliary and section views as well as dimensioning and working drawings. Modern Computer Aided Design software is used to create dimensioned drawings (introductory level). Students learn by hands-on exercises in free-hand sketching of engineering drawing. Objectives: Brings in to the learners the fundamental knowledge, principles and understanding of engineering drawing by visualizing. Practicing skills how to create drawings as per the engineering graphics conventions. 3. Syllabus Introduction: Brief introduction on Drawing instruments and paper sizes, Dimensioning systems, geometrical constructions and tangential arcs. Introduction and Difference between Orthographic, Isometric and Perspective Projection Systems. Explanation of First Angle Projections and Third Angle Projections. Orthographic Projections Systems: Brief Explanation and Practice on Projection of points and lines. Simple exercises. Projection of right regular solids (cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder and cone). Simple Exercises. Section of solids Introduction to Section of solids (cube, prism, cylinder and cone) cut by plane perpendicular to atleast one reference plane. Sectional views of simple machine parts (full section and half section only). Free hand sketches Free hand sketches of fasteners - external and internal threads, drilled hole, blind hole and tapped hole. 3 4. Learning Outcomes On completion of the module, the student should be able to: 1. Discuss the need of engineering drawings and various projection systems associated with production of engineering drawings. 2. Illustrate various projection methods of elements and objects through free hand sketches and practices. 3. Describe the concepts used in sectioning and standard methods of representing sectional views. 4. Discuss the need of Computer Aided production of engineering drawing by learning its introductory level. 5. Learning and Teaching Strategy Every week there will be 2 hours of classroom sessions during which the students will be learning through lectures and be exposed to practice the engineering graphics by using drawing instruments manually and introduction to CAD software. Assessment Strategy The evaluation method in this module comprises of three components, one being Course Work (CW) for 50 marks and other being Mid Term test (MT) (1 1/2 hour duration) for 25 marks and End Term test (ET) (1 1/2 hour duration) for 25 marks. In each class student has to complete the problems given and get it corrected on the same class. There will be a total of 10 sheets. Each sheet will be marked for maximum of 10 marks. 7 9. Learning and Teaching Expectations Read the Module Handbook very carefully and follow it as a guide to module requirements. Attend the lecture/practical classes regularly and participate actively in all the activities related to the module whenever held, by interacting with the teacher to enhance learning and understanding of the subject clearly. Study from text books once the topic is discussed in the classes. Check the black board regularly to receive information/announcements regarding module delivery. Develop good rapport with the Module Leader and Tutor to obtain adequate guidance, support and knowledge from them. Workout all the exercise problems and check their answers as and when the topics are covered. This will help to understand the further topics with ease. Clear your doubts with the tutor as and when it arises. Since it is a practical module with drawing in all classes, bring all the necessary drawing instruments to the classes regularly. Any difficulty in understanding the module, module delivery methods and finding relevant information from the prescribed sources should be discussed with the module leader and Tutor. 10 Graduate Attributes P7 P a g e
