1 September 2012 Contents: Folklife Program Event, Wed., 15 August Heritage Festival Application Forms & More HIGHLIGHTS from the FIRST Florida Folklife Program at Baker Block Museum, 15 August 2012 The Baker Block Museum was the proud cosponsor of a folk forum presented by the Florida Folklife Program on August 15. State Folklorist Blaine Waide talked about methods for identifying and documenting folklife in the Florida Panhandle between demonstrations and performances by a variety of area residents who are carrying on folklife traditions. They included; local barber, fiddler, storyteller, and folk artist Mack Brooks of Crestview, pine needle basket maker Connie Palmer of Altha, beekeeper Laurence Cutts of Chipley and bluegrass fiddler Samantha Purvines of Laurel Hill. Folklife Program Assistant Suzanne Huffman provided a variety of informational material on the Florida Folklife Program, which is a component of the Florida Department of State's Division of Historical Resources and CD's featuring folk musicians from across the state. The staff at the Baker Block Museum would like to express our appreciation to area residents whose attendance helped make the event a success. We would also like to thank museum volunteers, Brenda Russell, Raymond Russell, Jamey Broxson and Anissa Thompson for their hard work on this event and continued support of the museum.. 2 Florida State Folkloriest Blaine Waide talks about identifying folk and traditional cultural resources in our local communities during a folklife forum at the Baker Block Museum. Laurence Cutts awaits his turn during the folk forum beside the Florida Folklife Program banner on the porch of the Helms log cabin.

3 Third generation beekeeper Laurence Cutts of Chipley discussed beekeeping and the importance of pollination during the August 15th folklife forum. Mack Brooks and band members, Ricky Edenfield and Raymond Russell performed several tunes for the audience, with Brooks telling stories and talking about his folk art paintings of historical landmarks between sets.

4 Connie Palmer traveled from Altha, Florida to share her pine needle basket making techniques with area residents during the Baker Block Museum's first folklife forum. Samantha Purvines began performing bluegrass fiddle tunes at a very early age and has won many competitions for her talents. She has also performed at the Florida State Folk Festival in White Springs Florida. Samantha is a senior at Laurel Hill High School.
