Polaris K-12 Mural Policy Originally created Oct by Sarah Lewis, Gavin Kentch, and Kristen Merrell Updated changes Sept by Catlin Holowatch and Jody Jenkins Changed Oct by Christina Newell Updated Feb by Mario Davis, Brook Pigg, and Katherine Oliver Definition of Public Art: At Polaris, public art is all art displayed publicly throughout the school for an extended period of time. This art belongs to the entire school community. Public art does not always affect people the same way. Artwork may produce different opinions and reactions, but should not alienate any member of our community. Intent: The intent of Polaris public art is to reflect our diverse community. Murals are encouraged to be unique designs and styles. The artwork should be tasteful and transcend the boundaries of time. Process: 1. Draw a detailed, color sketch of your mural and write a paragraph of explaination detailing the intention of your mural and how you think it will be a positive addition to the school. 2. Sign the contract and give it to the art teacher after discussing a realistic timeline and completion date 3. Present the proposed mural to Op. Group and the Principal 4. Notify the school community by ing teachers, staff, and Parent Forum a. Do this through your advisor or art teacher 5. Display the following forms on the wall where your mural is to be created: a. The Proposed Mural to be Created Here form b. A detailed, color sketch of your mural c. Comment forms for people to fill out i. Suggests that comment box and pencils be provided at the mural space by the artist ii. Strongly encourages visiting advisories, family groups, Ad Board, and Parent Forum to promote your mural 6. You must have your mural on display for a minimum of 1 week and have at least 30 comments (and 80% of the comments are in favor), then you need to redo your sketch reflecting community comments and create a timeline for how you will finish your mural within three months of your beginning date, or by the end of the semester when it was started 7. Create an updated sketch of your mural incorporating comments from the community
8. Bring back your revised sketch to Op. Group for the final vote. Explain what changes you made frome the original sketch and why you made them a. This will be a 2/3 majority vote of the advisories present i. Voting in favor or opposition to the creation of a mural should be based on the mural guidelines stated in the contract and the proposed mural s adherence to them 1. Op Group will retain a copy of the mural policy including the mural guidelines in order to provide clarity as to what the guidelines entail to any representative who needs further clarification when voting commences b. If the mural is voted down then the artist will have to draft up a completely new mural with a new contract and paragraph of explaination and go through the entire process again. If it is voted down then constructive criticism should be given 9. After completing the entire process above you will be permitted to alter the mural space a. Before starting on your mural you should tape off the edges of the mural space. In order to avoid messes drop cloth or butcher paper should be used when you are working on your mural 10. Finalize the timeline for the completion of your mural in cooperation with the art teacher and any teachers or authority figures who will be recorded as your teacher or adult of record at the time in which you plan on doing your mural a. One copy of the proposed timeline should be kept with the art teacher, one with the teacher of record, and one with Op Group 11. At the end of your timeline, report back to Op Group on the status of your mural a. You should have with you a photo or visual representation of the current progress and your original proposal sketch b. A mural not completed within the timeline will be subject to a vote by Op Group for extension or removal i. Removal is defined as the painting over a mural in white ii. A simple majority of advisories and family groups present will be required to determine if the mural is to be extended or removed iii. Only one extension will be granted for any given mural, if the mural is not complete after the granted extension date it will be subject to removal in its entirety 1. Op Group has the power to reserve removal of any mural after the first extension in the case that the mural is reasonably nearing completion a. This requires a 2/3 majority vote and an agreement by the artist that the mural will be completed within three weeks b. If the mural is not completed after this time it will be removed c. Any mural not completed within the year it was proposed will be subject to removal 12. Your mural must be signed and dated when completed. Make sure to remove any masking materials (tape, cloth, etc.).
13. When a mural is complete it should be photographed and logged in a mural photo album to be kept in the art room. The log should consist of a record of the date it was completed and the name(s) of the person(s) who worked on the mural. Using Mural Spaces Already Painted On We, as a student body, are aware that there are a limited number of mural spaces in our school. Mural spaces can, however, be replaced with clean mural panels. Any student wishing to paint a mural on a space already in use must go through the following process: 1. Complete steps 1-9 in the mural process a. Op Group will take a 2/3 majority vote to decide if the new mural can be placed in the space b. Op Group will take a simple majority vote for the use of Op Group funds in order to pay for the old mural to be taken out and new panels put in i. If Op Group is unwilling to pay, then it is the responsibility of the student to seek out alternative funding methods ii. Until new panels are put in, you may not alter the mural space 2. The old mural, when the panels are removed, may be placed elsewhere in the school provided the person responsible for that area wishes to keep it in their space, otherwise it will be placed in storage 3. From here you are free to complete the rest of the mural process normally Students K-5 We recognize that this is a K-12 school and that the right to paint a mural is one reserved to everyone in the Polaris community including students, staff, parents, and clubs or groups. We also recognize that there may need to be some provision made for younger students while painting a mural: 1. Students in grades K-5 must be monitored by an adult at all times when painting a mural a. This is true even if you are painting in a group that includes students grades K-5 2. Other than the above provision, all the same rules apply to K-5 as do to the other community members. Deteriorating Murals Some murals may need maintence to stay in the condition that the artist intended, however, we recognize that this kind of attention takes time and over the years some murals may begin to deteriorate: 1. Op Group has the power to call to the attention of the community at large murals that are becoming unsightly or dangerous a. If it is determined that a mural is deteriorating, there are two ways to go about addressing this issue: i. A student or group of students may come fourth and take on the task of restoring the mural
ii. The mural may be removed 1. If a mural is removed it should be documented in the mural book in the art room along with the date of removal
MURAL GUIDELINES AND CONTRACT Please sign and return to the art teacher TASTEFUL. Including images that would be vulgar to any student, parent, or staff is not allowed. Remember that this is a K-12 community and Public Art in a school environment is different than personal artwork. ORIGINAL. Copied images should not be used unless credit is given to the original artist. QUALITY. Use high quality materials that will last and withstand normal hallway abuse. Talk to the art teacher for ideas on materials and paints. Use tape to mask off the edges and use floor cloths to protect the floor and adjoining walls. - Take the tape off when the mural is completed THOUGHT. Think about who will be viewing your artwork. Put thought into your mural so that it will be interesting and so that it is something of which the school can be proud. DIVERSITY. Create a unique mural that is unlike others. Encourages the use of different materials besides paint, talk to the art teacher for ideas. THE TEST OF TIME. Keep in mind that your mural is permanent. Do not creat images that will be out of style or obsolete as time goes on. SCHEDULE. Stick to your timeline. If you give up in the middle of the process then the fate of your mural is to be decided by Op Group. Although not required, it is definitely beneficial to have mural time built into your schedule with a study hall, independent study, or challenge course depending on your credit needs. Having a set time each week/day to work will help you stick to your timeline. IF YOUR FINAL PRODUCT IS NOT AN HONEST REPRESENTATION OF YOUR ORIGINAL SKETCH, THEN IT WILL BE SUBJECT TO REMOVAL. OP GROUP WILL HAVE THE POWER TO DECIDE ITS FATE!
I, agree to comply with the guidelines set fourth. I will do my best to create an interesting work of art for the Polaris Community to enjoy for years to come. I will complete my mural within the time set fourth by the art teacher and myself. I will take the community s comments into consideration before beginning my mural. Art teacher s signature: Date: Parent/Guardian/Adult Supervisor signature: Date: By signing this contract you agree to adhere to the mural process in its entirety, including, but not limited to: - Presenting the proposal to Op Group and the Principal - Filling out and displaying each of the mentioned documents in the proposed mural space - Getting the necessary number of positive comments - Incorporating comments (both positive and negative) in a second draft of your mural - Bringing your mural to a vote in Op Group - Creating and adhering to your timeline - Bringing your mural up for review at the completion of your timeline - Completing your mural, including the removal of tape and other masking materials and signing and dating when complete You also affirm that to the best of your knowledge, your mural adheres to all of the mural guidelines.
