Page2 4-H Club Banner - Anoka County What is a 4-H club banner? A banner is 3 x 5 and designed to hang vertically. A banner must be made of fabric or a material that will hang and can be 1 or 2 sided but only the design on one side of the banner will be judged. A club must indicate which side of the banner they would like judged. The club s name must be visible on the backside of the banner. A banner must be completed and equipped with a dowel (length 3-8 ) and yarn or rope tied on the dowel ready to hang. A banner can carry words, pictures, and messages to be shared with others. A 4-H banner allows clubs to make a statement and express their feeling about 4-H involvement by emphasizing: joining 4-H, a project, benefits of involvement in 4-H, the local club, Anoka County 4-H, or 4-H in general. Plan of Action - A banner message should be simple and without clutter. Do some brainstorming as a club. - What message do you want to share? - Do you want to portray by picture and words? - Do you want color, form, and space to convey your feelings? - List any ideas your group might have. Make sketches of at least three or four of the best ideas. - What is the simplest way to convey your idea? - Who is the audience that will be viewing your banner? - Remember the message should be brief and the design bold and simple. In planning your banner, think about the following. - Decide what elements will dominate. - Size and color elements help. - Make sure the message doesn t get lost. - Simple and bold is best. Make a sample banner. - Make a 3 x 5 sample banner on paper. - Cut and pin the colored parts of design and lettering on banner. - Tape the sample banner on a door or wall and stand back and get a visual effect. - If the design does not look quite right, change and adjust it now. - Remember, your banner will be viewed from a distance of 20 feet or more. Be sure it is readable from a distance. (Club Banner, Page 1)

Page3 Choosing Materials 1. Background a. There are a variety of materials available such as: Denim, canvas, heavier cottons, corduroy, blends of polyester, felt, burlap, wool, and upholstery or drapery material. 2. Lining a permanent banner a. Be creative and think what type of fabric will add interest or accent the theme. 3. Adding accents for texture and special effects a. Suggestions might be: velvets, brocades, knits, leather, lace, sheer materials, felt, burlap, corduroy, or vinyl. b. Consider: a variety of textures, quilting, stacking for a three dimensional effect, appliqué, beading, and/or embroidery. Putting a Banner Together 1. Assembly a) Banners may be hanging in windy or humid weather. Durable assembly techniques are needed! b) Hand or machine stitching is more durable than glue and can become an important part of the design if you choose. c) An iron-on bonding tape, such as Stitch Witchery, works better than gluing. 2. Finishing a. Allow extra material for a half-inch seam allowance on sides, top, and bottom for finishing. b. If lining, the edge-to-edge method is easy because front and back are cut in the same shape. 1) Put front piece and lining material together, right sides in. 2) Sew side seams and bottom. 3) Turn right sides out. Press. 4) Finish top after choosing the hanging rod. c. Felt banners can be left un-hemmed but felt tends to curl. If two pieces are put together, stitch along edge. Stitching becomes a part of the design and gives banner the sharp look and makes it more durable. 3. Hanging a Banner a. Dowel suggestions: Wood or bamboo poles, plastic PVC pipes, adjustable metal (brass) rods--1 inch diameter or smaller. The length of the cord should be no more than 6-12 longer than the length of the dowel. b. Yarn, rope or cord for hanging may be secured to pole by: 1) Cutting a small channel in each end, 2) drilling a hole and running the cord through, 3) inserting an eye screw in each end of the dowel. c. A weight at the bottom will help the banner hang straight. Suggestions are: a rod like the top one or drapery weights sewn in the bottom. d. Banners sent to the fair that are not ready or capable of hanging will not be considered State Fair Eligible. QUESTIONS Anoka County 4-H Office or annag@umn.edu (Club Banner, Page 2)

Page4 4-H Club Bench- Anoka County Promote 4-H by a club designing, building and decorating a bench with a 4-H theme to be used outside. PLAN OF ACTION Youth will plan and design a bench that promotes a 4-H theme. Make sketches of best ideas. When designing, please consider the weight of the bench. Benches are lifted and moved multiple times each year! Bigger is not always better! BENCH REQUIREMENTS Heavy benches should be built with sturdy locking castor wheels or another creative method to help move it easily. May be made from a pattern or original design. May be made from any type of wood or metal. Must be able to seat and hold at least two people. Must be durable and sturdy so bench will not tip easily. Bench will be used outside so make sure all materials are weatherproof. Enter your bench at the county fair as a club project. All benches will be donated to the fair and will be used on the grounds to promote 4-H and for the enjoyment of the fair visitors for many years to come. QUESTIONS Anoka County 4-H Office or annag@umn.edu

Page5 4-H Club Container Gardening A club should design a planter/floral display to be entered as a club project in 4-H at the Anoka County Fair. Purpose of the container garden is to develop teamwork and decision making skills as a club and to develop skills in creativity and horticulture. Containers are used to beautify the area around the 4-H building. The theme of the container garden must showcase 4-H. One container per club and must be registered by July 1. The container garden must be large enough to create a highly visible outdoor display and be made of a non-breakable material. Clubs are encouraged to use recycled materials when creating container displays. Plants must be appropriate to be displayed outdoors and in full sun. Containers will be judged on their color combination, overall health of the plants and attractiveness of the total plant display. Youth input and participation are the key factors in the club exhibit process! Any exhibits left in the 4-H building after the fair will be disposed of at the club s expense. Each club is responsible for the watering and care of their container garden during the County Fair. QUESTIONS Anoka County 4-H Office or annag@umn.edu

Page7 4-H Building Improvement Project- Anoka County Your 4-H club can help keep our 4-H Exhibit Building looking its best with the 4-H Building Improvement projects! 4-H clubs will choose a project to complete and then create an exhibit and be conference judged at the county fair. 4-H clubs will submit their proposal to 4-H staff for approval. 4-H staff may have to obtain Fairboard approval as well so please submit proposals by June 1. If there are costs involved the 4-H club and 4-H office must settle on a mutual budget before moving forward. Projects must enhance the 4-H building appearance or function. Projects can be improvement related, construction, or fundraising to purchasing something for practical use in the building. Purchased items could include- new display options, signage, push brooms, tables, etc. 4-H club must create a 3 sided display or other visual display to showcase their work and how they worked as a team to accomplish their goal. (Posters currently are hung on the lattice using hangers) Mount Berber carpet to the large photo display boards. There are 3 2 sided-displays. Picnic tables If clubs have suggestions to improvements on other areas of the grounds or building that we use, submit a proposal and 4-H staff will work with you to consider if the project is an option. 10 Page10 4-H Club Scrapbook - Anoka County General : Use scrapbook (purchased or handmade) no larger than 16" x 13". Photo album pages are recommended for photos. If mounting photos on paper pages, photo mounting spray is recommended. You may bring your on-going scrapbook, but only information from the current year will be judged. Format: First page should be a title page, including name of club and club year. Second page should be a table of contents. Number all pages. Tabs may be used for convenience. You may include: Photos/artwork Newspaper clippings Articles clipped from county newsletter/website Important correspondence Brief story and/or statements about your club's activities Club charter or constitution/by-laws Club goals and how you've achieved them Quotes from members/families List of 4-H activities/events and a checklist of who participated from your club Anything else that helps to tell your story Do NOT include your ribbons--the book gets too bulky. Tips for Success: Highlight or underline pertinent information or names in newspaper articles. Caption pictures and identify people in the photos. Type or neatly print. Use of color can make the book more attractive. Again- bigger is not always better! Thoughtfully select what items and photos tell your club story. Judging of Scrapbooks at County Fair: Each club submitting a scrapbook should select one or two club members who will meet with the judge and talk about the scrapbook. Judging will take place on Monday of County Fair. All scrapbooks will remain on display throughout county fair. Scrapbooks do NOT go on to State Fair. 2011, Regents of the University of Minnesota. University of upon request. Direct requests to the Extension Store at Printed on recycled and recyclable paper with at least 10 percent
