1 Section B - HOBBIES AND CRAFTS Department 909 Chairman - Kathy Hilbrant ITEMS ARE TO BE BROUGHT TO THE EXHIBIT BUILDING E ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 11TH BETWEEN 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. RULES - Entries close August 1st 1. All general rules apply to Section B. Please read them 2. All entries MUST be made by the exhibitors. 3. No hobby kits are to be used unless designated. 4. Special categories are listed for children, youth, young adults, adults, and senior citizens. 5. Items entered in any other category will risk being dis qualified if the item should have been entered into a listed category. 6. Exhibitors may "age up" and enter in classes above their age range. Exhibitors MAY NOT "age down" into age groups below their age range. 7. One entry per class will be enforced. 9. Children and Juniors Your age must be indicated on the Entry Form. Entry Fee: Children 11 and under no entry fee. Age 12 and up $1.00 per class Awards for Each Class 1st $ nd $ MILK CAP WALLHANGING 3 Year Olds Supplies: 3-lids, Aluminum foil, Ribbon or Strip of Construction paper 1. Cover the lids with Aluminum foil. 2. Glue anything you like to inside of the lid. (leaves, feathers, macaroni, etc.) 3. Lay the ribbon/construction paper flat and glue the lids to the ribbon or paper. 4. Loop the top of the ribbon/construction paper and glue, allow to dry before hanging. 2. MITTEN LACING CRAFT 3 Year Olds Supplies: 4 sheets cardstock, Pencil, scissors, holepunch and yarn 1. Draw and cut out a mitten on 1 piece of cardstock. 2. Trace around the mitten on the 3 remaining pieces of cardstock. 3. Cut out the mittens. 4. Line up two mitten shapes and hole punch around the sides. Do not hole punch along top (where your hand would go in.) 5. Use yarn to lace 2 mitten shapes together. 6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for the other mitten. 7. Cut a long piece of yarn, tie 1 end in a hole on each mitten. 8. Decorate as you like. 57

2 3. POPCORN BLOSSOM TREE 4 Year Olds Supplies: 3 cups of popped popcorn, Pink or red powdered paint, Paper bag, Blue, brown and green construction paper 1. Place popcorn in a paper bag. Sprinkle one cup of pink or red powdered paint. Shake bag till corn is colored. 2. Cut a large tree trunk with branches out of brown construction paper. 3. Cut out green leaves. 4. Glue tree trunk onto blue construction paper. 5. Glue on leaves 6. Dip popcorn into glue and stick on branches. Let dry. 7. Punch 2 holes in top of paper and run yarn or string, so item can be hung 4. GLITTER PLAY DOUGH SNOWMAN 4 Year Olds Supplies: 1 cup flour, 2 tablespoons Cream of Tarter, 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon oil, ¼ cup of salt, 5x5 piece of study cardboard, Glitter, Measuring cups and spoons 1. In a medium pot combined 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, ¼ cup salt, 1 tablespoon oil and 2 tablespoons of Cream of tartar. 2. Sprinkle in some glitter, then stir all the ingredients to combin them. 3. Heat mixture over medium heat, stirring until mixture thickens into a dough. 4. Remove the dough from the pot. Once it is cool enough to handle, knead it until it is a smooth consistency. 5. Roll the dough into balls to form Snowman. 6. Place on your decorated piece of card board. May place toothpicks between balls so it is sturdy. Glue to Base. 7. Use your imagination to make your snowman look snowman like. 5. STRIPED CATERPILLAR 5-6 Year Olds Supplies: Empty container (oatmeal, Coffee, etc.), Construction paper, Material or felt, Pipe Cleaners, Paper towel tube, Glue 1. Cover your container with glue and then cover with your paper material, or felt in a stripped pattern. 2. Use your choice of materials for the face, eyes, mouth and nose. 3. If you can poke two holes 2 inches apart on top of the head (you can also glue) attach antennas to the top. 4. Cut three 1-inch rings from paper towel tube. 5. Cut rings in half to make six half circles. Paint or color them. 6. Glue three to each side of the caterpillar. Place so the caterpillar does nor move around. 6. SNOWMAN SNOW GAUGE 5-6 Year Olds Supplies: Paint stick, White Paint, Paint brush, Black & orange marker, Black craft foam, Small piece of fabric or ribbon, Scissors, Ruler. 1. Cover the paint stick with a coat of paint. Let dry. Repeat if necessary. 2. Once dry, lay a ruler alongside the paint stick. Mark every inch with a black line, then number each line beginning at the bottom of the stick. 3. Draw eyes and mouth on the top of the paint stick with black marker, then use orange marker to draw a carrot nose. 4. Cut out hat from the black craft form and glue it to the top of the stick. 5. Cut a narrow strip of fabric and tie it around the notch in the stick to make a snowman s scarf 7. STONE PETS OR PEOPLE 7-8 Year Olds Supplies: Smooth stones that have some flat spots for stacking. Glue/glue gun, Assorted colors of paint 1. Balance stones on top of each other and glue. 2. Make animals or people. 3. Paint with assorted colors to depict your person or animal. 4. Place on base. 58

3 8. GLITTLER SNOWFLAKES 7-8 Year Olds Supplies: Toilet paper rolls, Scissors, Glue, Glitter, Piece of ribbon 1. Flatten toilet paper rolls and cut into six sections. 2. Glue the six sections together side by side to form a snowflake. Let dry. 3. Run a thin line of glue along the top edge of the snowflake. Sprinkle glitter over the top of the glue. Let dry. Repeat above for other side. 4. Run a piece of ribbon through the top and tie. 9. BOTTLE DOLL 9-11 Year Olds Supplies: Detergent bottle, Scrap fabric, Card Board, Plastic foam ball, Glue, Tissue, Paper, Yarn/string. 1. Wash and dry a detergent bottle. 2. Glue pieces of scrap fabric to the bottle for clothes. 3. Glue on cardboard arms covered in fabric. 4. Glue cardboard pieces to the bottom for shoes. 5. For the head cover a plastic foam ball with glue and tissue paper. 6. Add yarn/string for hair, cut paper features 7. Cover lid with fabric for a hat. 10. TIN CAN LUMINARY 9-11 Year Olds Supplies: Tin Can, Plain paper, Pencil, Duct or masking tape, Nail and a hammer 1. Wash can well and remove label. 2. Measure your can so you know how big of a design to draw. 3. Fill can with water, leave about 1 inch from top, freeze overnight. 4. Plan your design while your can freezes. Cut the paper to fit around the can. 5. Once water is frozen place paper with design around can and tape into place. 6. Use the hammer and nail to tap holes into the can and ice. Leave space between holes. 7. When design is done, remove pattern and let ice melt. 8. Make sure can is dry. You may supply a battery-operated tea light. 11. CHRISTMAS BALL WREATH Year Olds Supplies: Christmas ornaments Circular wire form (no bigger than 18 inches), Christmas ribbon, Hot Glue, Thin wire, Christmas florals 1.Weave length of ribbon in and out of the wire form. Leave ends crisscrossed and hanging off the bottom. 2. Glue ornaments to wire frame. 3. Attached a bow and/or Christmas floral. 12. RAINBOW FRIENDSHIP BANDS Year Olds Supplies: Large wooden popsicle sticks, Buttons, Felt, Colored Sharpies 1. Soak popsicle sticks in boiling water for a couple of hours. Check to see of sticks are pliable, most will need to soak for a few more hours in another batch of hot water. 2. Bend your sticks slowly, place inside a glass to dry overnight. 3. Decorate anyway you like. 59

Materials must be picked up by August 1st. The Entry Office is open Monday-Friday 9am-11:30am and 1pm-3:30pm. Exhibitors must use ALL materials provided and two additional materials can be used. 14. FAMILY FUN Theme: Winter Wonderland Use your imagination to create a Winter Wonderland out of as many recycled materials as you can. keep under 3ft tall and must be free standing.
