Oriole Feeder The secret to attracting orioles? Oranges! This DIY oriole feeder is simple to make and fruit-loving birds will flock to it. By Birds & Blooms Editors No need to break the budget when it comes to attracting orioles! This simple DIY oriole feeder was inspired by one designed by Daniel Medbury of Plymouth, Michigan. We ve simplified it a bit so anyone can build it even a child with some adult supervision. You may even have enough scrap lumber lying around to make one or two without spending a dime. Supplies: One scrap 2 x 4, at least 13 inches long One 1in x 8in board, about 12in long One 1/4in dowel, at least 18in long Four 2 ½ in galvanized finishing nails Four common nails Waterproof carpenter s glue One Screw eye for hanging the feeder Recommended Tools: Table saw Power Drill Combination square Instructions: 1.) Cut a 2 x 4 board at least 13 inches long. Cut two 45 angles to form a centered peak on one end (this will become the top). Use a combination square or tri-square to help draw the cutting angles. "Dog-ear" the corners at the bottom end by sawing about 3/4 inch off each corner at a 45 angle. Drill two 1/4-inch holes. Center one hole 1-1/4 inches from bottom of the board and the other 6-1/2 inches from bottom. Make sure you drill the holes perpendicular to the 2 x 4. This will ensure that your perches will be straight. 10

2.) Cut two roof pieces from the 1-inch x 8-inch board. One section should measure approximately 6 inches x 7-1/4 inches and the other 5-1/4 inches x 7-1/4 inches. If you'd like, dog-ear the outside corners of the roof pieces by cutting off about 1 inch from each corner at a 45 angle. Nail the roof pieces to the 2 x 4 peak with two common nails. The longer piece overlaps the shorter. 3.) The oranges are held onto the feeder by spearing them onto 2-1/2-inch finishing nails. Center these nails on each side of the 2 x 4 about 3 inches above each perch hole. Drive the nails about 1 inch into the 2 x 4 at a downward angle so the oranges won't slide off. 4.) Cut the 18-inch dowel in half for perches. Insert the dowels into the holes and center them. A little waterproof carpenter's glue in the holes will hold the perches firmly in place. 5.) File or cut a flat spot in the center of the roof peak for a screw eye, which is used to hang the feeder. Drill a pilot hole first to prevent the wood from splitting. A coat of deck stain is optional, but it'll help protect the wood from weather. Be sure the stain is dry before using the feeder. Repurposed Coffee Can Birdfeeders By Amanda Palmer For outdoor décor that is custom and affordable, try crafting your own birdfeeder by repurposing a coffee can. It s a simple 5-step process that anyone who can handle a pair of wire cutters can do. Follow the instructions below to get a jumpstart on springing up your lawn. Supplies: Metal coffee can Drill 11

Craft wire Spray paint Wire cutters Scrap screen Hot glue gun (optional) Painters tape Birdseed Instructions Drill 1. Cut a 1- to 2-inch hole in the lid of the coffee can and a second, much smaller hole right below it where the perch will go 2. While the drill is going, a) make two small holes on either side of the can where the wings will attach and b) two small holes at the head and the base of the can where the hanging wire will go Paint 3. Spray paint the can and lid black, or whatever color the base will be. Let dry Snip 4. Cut four long pieces of wire, approximately 12-inches long 12

5. Loop two wires into a teardrop shape, twisting the bottom together extending 1/2- to 1-inch. At this point, you can add the mesh/screen to span the wires. If you choose to add the screens, hot glue them to the wire. Twist the other two around each other for the hanger More paint 6. Make sure the base color is completely dry. Then, using painter s tape, create a pattern on the can for where stripes or spots will appear and spray paint again Glue 7. Attach the wings and perch using the hot glue gun. For best results, bend the twisted end piece of the wings so they hook into the holes. The perch will need to be about 1/3 of the way into the hole to stabilize Tip: Add any extra pizzazz to it, like eyes, tiny wire legs or antennae. Anything you use will need to be weather-friendly and hot-glued to the feeder. Get creative! Adding Feed 8. Fill up the feeder, hang on a branch, and watch the birds flock to the best-looking feeder on the block Tin Can Snowman By Jessi Wohlwend If you re looking for a quick and easy Christmas craft, look no further! This adorable tin can snowman is not only a great way to recycle some leftover tin cans, but it s a really fun project and it s fast and simple to put together! Supplies: 3 empty tin cans in varying sizes paint (white for the body, pink for the cheeks) buttons (enough for the eyes, nose, mouth, and body) twigs or thick floral wire for the arms black felt for the hat Christmas fabric and embellishments for the scarf hot glue paintbrush 13

Instructions 1.) Start by painting all of your cans white. I used spray paint and it was quick and covered well, but regular paint with a paintbrush will work just fine too. Be sure to paint the entire outside of the can, including the bottom. The Head 2.) Start with the smallest can; this will be the head. Turn your tin can upside-down so the opening is on the bottom. Adults, using hot glue, attach the buttons for the eyes, nose, and mouth. Once the glue is dry, paint on small pink circles above the mouth to make cheeks. The Arms 3.) I found thick, brown floral wire which already looked fairly twig-like. But I wanted my snowman s arms to have fingers. I used wire cutters to cut a few bits off the end of the wire, and then used hot glue to re-attach them to make hands. The Body 4.) The two larger cans are going to be the body of the snowman. The middle-sized can is the upper body and the largest can is the lower body. Start by adding a few more buttons to the two larger cans for the snowman s coat. I put three on the middle-sized can and two up near the top of the largest can. Before you start gluing, make sure the openings of the cans face down! 5.) Next drill holes on either side of the middle-sized can for the arms. I was a bit worried I would smush the can by drilling the holes, but if you re using tin cans, they seem to be strong enough to withstand a bit of pressure from the drill. Don t worry if the hole you drill is bigger than the arms; you can fill it with hot glue later. 6.) Stick the arms in through the hole and adjust their length as necessary. Reach inside the can and bend the end of the wire flat against the can. Hot glue it in place. 7.) Once the glue is dry, bend the arms outside the can to whatever shape you d like. The Hat 8.) To make the hat, cut out two circles from the black felt, one larger one for the brim and one smaller one for the top. (You can also just cut one large circle and then cut the smaller circle out from the inside like I did below.) You also need a rectangle of felt to give the hat its height. 9.) Fold up some printer paper into a ring, and glue the rectangle of felt to the outside. This will help the hat keep its shape. 14

10.) Once you have a ring of felt, glue the top of the hat to the top of the ring, and glue the brim to the bottom. Put it together 11.) Attach the hat to the snowman s head with a bit of hot glue. I glued mine on at a jaunty angle, cuz look how cute that is! 12.) Then glue the tin cans on top of each other with the smallest at the top and the largest at the bottom. Make sure to line up the face and the coat buttons! The hot glue dried sorta yellow-ish, so I painted it with some white paint. 13.) Once the glue (and paint) is dry, cut a long thin rectangle of fabric for the scarf. Wrap the scarf around your tin can snowman s neck and tie it. *Adults should help cloverbuds to attach items using the hot glue gun. 15

Garden Stepping Stones By Holly Koss, 4-H Leader Supplies: Concrete mix (ex. Spray your pie tin with cooking spray to make sure the stepping stone can come out. 2.) Smooth the top of the concrete. 3.) Plan our design for stepping stone using your rocks, shells, etc. 4.) Place items in concrete. (Make sure that all items are pushed far enough in the concrete to secure them) 5.) Let the pan sit overnight, then remove from the tin. 16

17

Tin- Can Lights Supplies tin can hammer large nail water towel spray paint, optional Instructions: 1.) Clean cans and fill with water. Place cans in freezer for at least 24 hours. 2.) Once water has frozen solid, you are ready to start making holes. *The frozen water stops the can from becoming dented. 3.) Create a pattern to trace onto the can such as a star or heart. Draw the pattern on the can using a marker. 4.) Lay can on a towel and use the hammer and nail to tap holes in the can. 5.) Once holes are made, place can in a sink and wait for the ice to melt. 6.) Dry can, being careful, as the back of the holes on the inside of the can are sharp. 7.) Paint can, if desired. 18

8.) Place tea-light candle inside and light or put a battery operated candle inside. *You can add a wire hanger by drilling holes on either side of the can and securing the wire inside. 19

DIY Tin Can Flower Bird Feeder Repurpose tin cans to make this cute yet functional bird feeder Supplies: Tools: Cleaned out tin can Spray paint Craft foam Large wooden beads (or plastic) Thick twine Drill to put holes in the can to hang Hot glue gun 24

Instructions 1.) On the side of each tin can, use a ruler to measure about a 1/4-in. from each end in a straight line. Then mark a dot at each of these points with a permanent marker. Use a drill or metal punch to make holes about 1/4-in. wide where the marked dots are. These two holes are where you will insert the twine for making a hanger later on 2.) In a well-ventilated area, spray paint the outside of your tin cans in various colors. Apply as many coats as needed for full coverage and let dry hours. 3.) Lay the open end of each can centered on a foam flower. Trace around the circle opening with a pencil. Centered inside the circle either freehand or use a compass to draw another circle about a 1/2 inch smaller all around. Then use a ruler to draw several crisscrossing straight lines inside the original traced circle (like the way a pizza is cut). First cut out the small inner circle. Then cut along each crisscrossing line, stopping at the traced outline of the original circle. This will make several tabs around the inner perimeter. 4.) Lay the foam flower face down on a flat surface. Apply a ring of hot glue around the perimeter of the traced circle. Then place the open end of the can aligned on top of the hot glue ring. Hold the can firmly in place until the glue dries. Hot glue each of the cut tabs down on the interior of the can rim to further secure the foam flower in place. 5.) For the hangers, first cut a in. piece of twine for each of your cans. Thread one end through the back hole, inside of the can and back up through the front hole. With even lengths of twine, place several large beads on each loose end. Knot the top of the twine to secure the hanger with beads in place. Repeat for each tin can feeder. 25

Wild Turkey Project Supplies: Items from nature, such as pinecones, leaves, sticks, pebbles, bark, and seeds Kitchen items, such as bay leaves and dry bean-soup mix Colored poster board Scissors Pencil Small plate Thick white crafts glue Instructions: 1. First gather items from the outdoors, such as those listed above. 2. Cut poster board to the desired size. On poster board, trace around a small plate for the body shape. 3. Starting at the outside of the circle, glue on small pieces in rows. Create a tail and feet from long pieces of nature items. Use bark for the head. Add eyes, a beak, and a red wattle. Let the glue dry. 26

Message and Display Board Tools: 27

scissors hot glue gun pencil small art paintbrush Supplies: cardboard fabric ribbon hot glue stick small plate wooden clothespins pictures craft paints Instructions: 1.) Gather your tools and materials. Using a small plate as your guide, trace a circle on a piece of cardboard. Cut the circle out of the carboard. 2.) Trace the shape on the back side of the fabric, using the cardboard as your guide. Cut at least one half-inch beyond the outline on the fabric. 3.) Place the cardboard circle in the middle of the upside-down fabric. Using a hot glue gun, fold the extra fabric onto the back and glue into place. 4.) Paint each wooden clip inside and out except on the back where it will be glued to the fabric. 5.) Flip the fabric-covered circle over and space the pins around the edge. The clip should be facing out with half the pin touching the fabric. 6.) Apply glue down the center of the back of the pin. Only cover half the pin with glue, and then press firmly in place. 7.) Glue a knotted ribbon to the top pin, which will allow the frame to be hung. 28

Beat in butter, eggs and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Drop by tablespoonful 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375* for 8-10 minutes or until browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Yield: 3 Dozen 30

Printed Leaf T-shirt Supplies: White, prewashed t-shirt Heavy piece of cardboard that will fit inside t-shirt Leaves of various shapes and sizes 31

Small foam paint brushes Fabric Paint Paper plates Newspaper Instructions: Insert cardboard into t-shirt. Place leaves, vein side up, on newspaper. Using the foam paint brush paint the leaves different colors. Pick leaf up by the stem and place on t-shirt. Gently press down on the leaf with hand or using paper towel. Carefully lift up the leaf. Allow the shirt to dry overnight and do not wash for at least 7 days. 32

Decorated Recycled Buckets Approximate Time: One hour for project. Longer time depending on how many coats of finishes applied Supplies: Empty cat litter or detergent bucket or 5 liter bucket Small foam brush Mod Podge Paper large sheets of scrapbook paper or any other paper scissors wet rag to wipe hands on during project 33

Instructions: Cut paper to fit around the bucket or cut as you go. If using large scrapbook paper, only the paper for the sides needs to be cut. Overlapping the paper is okay. You want to cover all the writing on the buckets. Pour a small amount of Mod Podge into a bowl or use out of the container. Apply a medium coat of Mod Podge on front of bucket evenly. Put on scrapbook paper or other paper of your choice. Make sure the paper is straight and where you want it. You will only be able to move it once or twice, as it gets tacky fast. Smooth out as much of the bubbles and wrinkles you can with your fingers before it gets tacky. The rest will flatten as it dries. Once you have finished the first side, start on the opposite side. Do the sides of the bucket last. You might need to overlap the side paper with the front and that will be fine. Let it dry. You can then put 2-3 thin coats of Mod Podge on. I put two coats on mine. You can follow what's written on the Modge Podge container for the coats. There is no right or wrong way to do this project. If you think it doesn't look right, wait till it dries. It does look a lot better dry than wet. Once the coats are applied, most of flaws disappear. It is very unique looking. Use with or without the lid on. 34

Handprint Leaf Napkins Supplies: White Cloth Napkins Fabric Paint (Yellow, Orange, Green) Brown Puffy Paint for decorative edging Paint Brushes 35

Baby Wipes Paper Plate Trash Bags/Newspapers Directions: First lay your napkins flat on some clean, trash bags or newspapers. This is especially important because the fabric paint will more than likely bleed through to the other side and you don t want your pretty table to get messed up. Then one by one, paint your child s hands and press them in various areas on the napkins. I did four handprints in each of my colors {a total of 12 handprints on each napkin} You may need more or less to get the look you like. Now grab your puffy paint and outline each handprint, to look like leaves. {It doesn t have to be perfect} Once done, let the paint dry completely before using or storing your napkins. 36

Salt Dough Leaves Salt Dough: Ingredients: 1 cup flour ½ cup salt ¼ cup water ¼ cup vegetable oil Food coloring Directions: Mix the flour, salt water and oil together in a bowl. Add a little more flour or water if needed until the dough reaches the desired consistency. Separate the dough into smaller bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl to create various fall colors. 37

Leaves: Supplies: Salt Dough Cookie cutters (leaf shaped) Baking tray Straws Twine Parchment paper Directions: Lay a piece of parchment paper onto a baking tray. Flatten out pieces of salt dough and use leaf shaped cutters to begin making salt dough leaves. Lay the leaves onto the tray. Use a straw to punch a small hole into the top of each leaf. Add vein like design using a toothpick. Bake the leaves at 200 degrees for 3-4 hours. Let them cool and harden overnight. Once they have cooled, you can tie twine through the hole of each leaf to hang them. 38
