1 Ocean in a bottle What you will need water cooking oil (we used canola, but vegetable would work well) blue food colouring large bottle (2 litre pop bottles work well) funnel If you are using a bottle that s not child safe, you might want to run a little hot-glue around the inside of the bottle lid. What to do: 1. Fill approximately 1/3 of your bottle with water. 2. Add several drops of food colouring. 3. Have the child shake the bottle to disperse the food colouring. 4. Top up the bottle with oil. Fill right to the top then pop the lid on. Exploration goal 4 - Children experience an environment where they develop working theories for making sense of the natural, social, physical and material worlds.

2 Cupcake Case Birds What you will need Cupcake cases Scissors Glue Black pen Orange paper How to do it 1. Flatten the cupcake case. 2. Draw a loose bird/animal shape on the underside (the bit that won t show- crucial if you are using cases that have decoration only on the outer side). 3. Cut out your shape or let your child do it themselves. It s great for working on scissor control since the shapes are simple and the thin paper is easy to cut. For the bird, start at the tail end, cutting two similar sized wedges out to create a fanshaped tail. At the opposite end, cut out a triangle to give the head/beak shape. From the point at which the beak meets the main body, cut outwards to create the tip of the wing, then do the same on the other side of the beak. You are effectively cutting out an M, or W depending on which way you look at it. 4. Cut a small triangle from some coloured paper. Stick to the tip of the beak section to actually give you a beak. Or you could paint/colour it in. Then add two eyes. Fasten the underside of your bird to the short end of a bendy straw and stick in a plant pot, window box, pencil holder. Children will develop: Control and confidence in their fine motor skills through cutting.

4 Home Made Chalk Ingredients: Pottery plaster or plaster of Paris Water Tempura powered paint (or food colouring Silicon mould Spoon Bowls Directions 1. Add 2 Table spoons of water to a small bowl. 2. Add 3 Tablespoons of plaster powder. 3. Add ½ Tablespoon of tempura powder (or 6-8 drops of food colouring. 4. Mix well. 5. Add a few drops of water if the mixture is too dry. Have the children experiment with mixing the colours. This is a great way to teach them about colour combinations and mixing to make other colours. Apply small blobs of the coloured mixture into the silicon moulds. Make a slightly more runny mixture by adding a few more drops of water and apply this over the mould to ensure all gaps are filled. Wait for 12 hours to allow the moulds to dry. Communication goal 4 Children discover and develop different ways of being creative and expressive.

5 Matching Alphabet Beans Literacy Game What you need: Dry butter beans Black marker Cupcake cases Muffin tray What to Do: Use ordinary, dry butter beans (sold in the bag at the supermarket), write on the letters of the alphabet using black marker to create a set of alphabet beans. Place the beans into a basket or bowl. a Fill a muffin tray with cupcake cases. Inside each paper case write a letter of the alphabet for matching the beans to. The beans are lovely and tactile, making a kinaesthetic learning resource for other possible literacy games too. By making another few sets of each letter they would be perfect for using to spell out small words, practise name writing or to select initial letter sounds to match objects. Adapt these for any stage of literacy development! Children experience an environment where they experience the stories and symbols of their own and other cultures.

6 Pipe cleaner fun Pipe cleaner and a colandar it doesn t get much easier than that. This is an ideal activity for babies twelve months plus. Start by putting the pipe cleaners into the holes to show baby how it works, baby will instinctively pull them all out but then comes the challenge when they try to put them back in.
