1 Bug Etiquette Picture of random bugs Find or print pictures of bugs and post Discuss bugs are living creatures that need to be treated with respect Do not intentionally step on bugs or disturb them If you turn a log or rock over you might find a bug in action The bugs will be disturbed but it is a good opportunity to quickly look at the bug at work Briefly observe then make sure to gently put the log or rock back the way you found it

2 Resist Spider Web Water color paint Paint brushes Rubber cement White construction paper Paint a spider web on a sheet of construction paper for each child using rubber cement Let dry overnight Paint over the spider web outlines Let dry Peel off the rubber cement to reveal a spider web!

Ask have you ever seen this bug or insect in real life? Ask what bug or insect don t you like? Ask why don t you like this bug or insect? Ask have you ever seen this bug or insect in real life? Ask would you want any of the bugs as a pet? Ask why or why not? Record answers on the large sheet of paper It is an option to discuss any bug or insect that may be misunderstood Repeat this activity anytime you introduce a new bug or insect to the children

5 Working Web Yarn Chairs Scissors Cotton balls Set chairs out Tie one end of a long piece of yarn to one chair leg Discuss - What a spider web is - Spider s eat insects - A spider s web is made of silk threads that come from the Spider s abdomen - A spider s web is sticky to catch their prey Create a spider web that will catch cotton ball insects Wrap the yarn around the chair legs to make a web Test your web- toss cotton balls at the web Does your web catch the insects? If it does why does it? If it doesn t discuss how the web could be improved

6 Eat Like a Grasshopper Large sheet of paper Marker Draw a line down the middle of the large sheet of paper Label one half same and the other half different Post the large sheet of paper Discuss - Grasshoppers eat plants and live in the undergrowth - Some eat plants that grow in the garden - Others eat only weeds - Some eat only grass - Grasshoppers don t drink water they get it through the plants they eat - How is your diet the same as a grasshopper? - How is your diet different? Record the results

7 Silkworms Hatch Sturdy shoe box with lid Scissors Mulberry leaves (very important) Silkworms Use the scissors to poke small holes in the lid CAREFUL to not make the holes too big or the worms will crawl out IMPROTANT NOTE: Silkworms will ONLY eat mulberry leaves. Do not try to feed them anything else. They will not eat it and starve to death. Place the silkworms and the mulberry leaves inside the box Place the lid back on the box Observe the silkworms each day and discuss This experiment takes several weeks so you will need to continually replace the mulberry leaves to keep the worms from starving.

8 Butterfly Life Cycle Worksheet Worksheet (provided) Crayons or markers Scissors Glue sticks Print a butterfly life cycle worksheet for each child Discuss - What is the life-cycle of a butterfly? Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly - What do butterflies eat? Sweet nectar from fruits and flowers - Why do we need butterflies? Butterflies are the second largest group of pollinators next to honey bees - What is the difference between a butterfly and a moth? Most butterflies fly during the day (diurnal). Moths fly at night (nocturnal) Color your worksheet Cut out the egg, chrysalis, caterpillar and butterfly Paste the pieces in the correct life cycle order

9 Butterfly Pollination Bright color construction paper Scissors Juice boxes Cheeto puffs Cut a construction paper flower for each child Place a juice box out for each child Place one Cheeto puff on each side of each juice box Discuss butterflies and pollination Pick a flower and place it on top of your juice box over the straw You are now a butterfly! Land on your flower and take a sip of the nectar (juice box) As you drink touch your tiny butterfly hands on the pollen (the Cheeto puffs) Fly around the center and touch all the other flowers and transfer pollen on each bloom you land on Discuss the results

10 Bee Pollination Flower printout Scissors Simple bee printouts Cheeto puffs Crayons or markers Jumbo craft sticks Large paper bag Glue Print and cut a simple bee for each child Print and cut out a flower for each child and one extra Cut down the bag to half size Glue a flower on the outside of the bag Dump Cheetos into the bag Discuss bees and pollination Color your bee and flower Glue your bee onto a jumbo craft stick making it a puppet Use your puppet to fly over to the flower and grab some Cheetos Reminder- as you eat your Cheetos DO NOT wipe or lick your fingers Fly around and land on each other s flowers You can see how pollen is left behind You have successfully pollinated a flower!

11 Bug Jar Construction paper Markers Ink pads Use a marker to draw a simple jar on a sheet of construction paper for each child Write Bug Jar on the top of each sheet Discuss different types of bugs and insects Write your name in the blank Dip your finger on an ink pad and stamp it onto the jar Use different colors to create different tyeps of bugs Try creating a bee, firefly, ladybug, butterfly, caterpillar, etc. Wash your hands Add detials to your bugs with markers for example eyes, wings, legs, etc.

12 Glowing Firefly Green 20 ounce bottle Glow stick Green and gold pipe cleaners 2 Yellow pony beads Construction paper Glue gun Scissors Photos of a fireflies Wash the bottle and remove all labels Cut a pair of construction paper wings Cut a rectangle of construction paper that will wrap only partially around the bottle (you don t want it to wrap all the way around) Discuss fireflies and show the children photos Wrap and twist three green pipe cleaners around the bottle as legs With the teacher s help glue gun the rectanlge around the bottle not covering and glue gun the wings onto the body Place the cap on the bottle With the teacher s help glue gun the two yellow beads on the cap as eyes Twist a gold pipe cleaner around the neck of the bottle as an antennea Crack to activate the glow stick Un-cap the bottle and drop it into the bottle and re-cap it Turn the lights off and take turns flying your firefly around the center!

13 Insect Body Parts Large sheet of paper Markers or crayons Post the large sheet of paper Discuss - What is an insect? - How many of you have seen an insect? - What did it look like? - I have a large sheet of paper and I need help drawing an insect Input ideas of what the insect looks like as the teacher draws it Does it have a head? Is it square, oval or round? What does the body look like? Does it have a tail? What does it s mouth look like? Does it have legs? How many? What color should we color it? Does it have eyes? How many? Does it have ears? Does it have a nose? When your drawing is complete take a step back and discuss the results. Does it look like any insect you have seen outside? Try this activity again towards the end of the month after the children have learned about bugs and insects. Compare it to the image drawn the first time. Is the second drawing more accurate?

Motions: Head: point to head Thorax: point to stomach area Abdomen: point to rear and shake 6 legs: show 6 fingers 2 Antennae: with index finger wiggling above head Compound Eyes: hands cupped like "c" around eyes Wings: interlock hands at thumbs and wiggle fingers in flying motion

15 Name that Bug Pictures of different bugs and insects Print pictures of different bugs and insects or use a tablet and gather bug and insect images Show images one at a time When you see an image shout out it s name How many as a group can you identify?

16 Bug and Insect List Large sheet of paper Marker Magazines Scissors Post the sheet of paper Help the kids create a list of every insect they can think of Encourage them to include anything they think is an insect Look through magazines to try to find a picture of each insect on the list Cut the insects out and glue them on the list next to the appropriate name As the month goes on go back to the list to cross off any names that aren t really insects such as a spider or scorpion that are arachnids

17 Classification Large sheet of paper Marker Stick Notes Pictures of bugs and insects Tape Draw lines on the large sheet of paper creating columns Label each column using a sticky note with one insect characteristic For example has one pair of wings, has two pair of wings has six legs, has four legs, etc. Post the sheet of paper Look at each picture Decide as a group how to classify it Tape it in the corresponding column

18 Color Mixing Butterflies Ziploc bags Red, yellow and blue paint Pipe cleaners Discuss butterflies- their body parts and specifically their wings Give each child a Ziploc bag Squirt a small amount of red and yellow paint, blue and yellow paint or red and blue paint into the bag Seal the bag securely Use your hands to squish and mix the colors Discuss results Twist a pipe cleaner in the middle creating a butterfly

19 Bug Camouflage Collage Magazines Scrap construction paper Glue sticks Construction paper Liquid starch Paint brush Discuss how bugs hide in areas where their coloring blends into the environment which is called camouflage Discuss why it s important for bugs to do this Tear a photo of a bug out of a magazine Glue the picture on a similarly colored sheet of construction paper Look at the bugs color patterns and tear several pieces of scrap construction paper with similar coloring Glue the torn pieces around your bug Create a habitat in which your bug can be camouflaged Brush a layer of liquid starch over and let dry

20 Camouflage Game M & M s and candy corns Box Various items- crayon, Lego, block, spoon etc. Crayons or markers Shallow container Mix the M & M s and candy corn in the shallow container Gather various items and place them in a box Choose a few things that will be hard to see because they blend in with the box Discuss how bugs hide in areas where their coloring blends into the environment which is called camouflage Discuss why it s important for bugs to do this Pick three colors of M & M s out of the shallow container of candy Why are some colors of M & M s easier to see? Did yellow and orange M & M s blend with the candy corns? Now let s see how many things you can see inside a box The teacher shows the items very quickly Discuss all the things you saw as a group Look at the items closely to see if you saw every item Discuss why some items were more difficult to see and why they may have been missed

21 Insect Me Creation Head, Thorax, Abdomen song (provided) Random scrap and collage materials Glue, scissors and tape Camera Printer Place all of the materials at a table Take a picture of each child s head Discuss the parts of an insect Sing the Head, Thorax, Abdomen song While the children are creating print the pictures Time to get creative! Now you know all the parts of an insect you are gong to create one Use the collage materials and tools to create an insect Cut the picture of your head out Attach it to your insect as it s head

22 Roly Poly Brown construction paper Light brown construction paper Brads Silver sharpies Sticker eyes Glue sticks Cut a supply of brown construction paper triangles with rounded edges (8 per child) Cut a supply of light brown construction paper legs and antenneas Discuss roly poly bugs and why they roll up into a ball Discuss how the children instead of rolling up and being scared can face their problems and find a way to work them out Dictate to a teacher ways to solve a problem The teacher writes a different way on each triangle (each section of the roly poly s body) With a teacher s help attach the triangles with a brad creating a roly poly bug Add a sticker eye Glue on legs and antennas

23 Dough Bugs Favorite play dough recipe Play dough making materials Head, Thorax, Abdomen song (provided) Pipe cleaners Wiggly eyes Scissors Cut the pipe cleaners into small pieces that will represent legs Discuss the three parts of a bug s body- head, thorax and abdomen Sing the Head, Thorax, Abdomen song Make a batch of play dough! Roll three balls- head, thorax and abdomen Stick them together to form a bug Add pipe cleaner legs Add wiggly eyes

24 Act a Life Cycle Toilet paper Discuss a butterflies life cycle- egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly Wrap a friend in toile paper like a mummy- this is the caterpillar making it s chrysalis Break out of the toilet paper Fly around! Repeat with a different friend

25 Pasta Butterfly Life Cycle Construction paper Marker Glue Dry pasta- spiral macaroni, shell macaroni and bow tie macaroni Rice Divide each child s construction paper into four parts and label each part 1, 2 3, and 4 Discuss a butterflies life cycle- egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly For day 1 glue on rice as the eggs For day 2 glue on spiral macaroni as the caterpillar For day 3 glue on shell macaroni as the chrysalis For day 4 glue on the bow tie macaroni as the butterfly
