3 Page 3 of 6 A Pop Art master, Roy Lichtenstein produced an impressive body of work in printmaking. His first Pop subject was in the 1956 lithograph Ten Dollar Bill. Lichtenstein examined our age of consumerism and mass production, finding his images in that world, such as in his comic book subjects. Regarding this screenprint, the catalogue raisonné of his prints states, "The plates were commercially printed and wrapped in clear cellophane packages of 10 for sale at Bert Stern's On 1st store. Correspondence found in the artist's records indicates that the plates may have been fabricated at Artmongers Manufactory, New York...Paper Plate is related to other designs the artist produced for dishware, such as the limited-edition place settings produced by Jackson China Co. for Durable Dish Company in 1966, and the tea service designed for Rosenthal China in 1984." $1,000 ~ $2,000 CAD $1,400 CAD Lot # 006 ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG American Storyline I, Reels (B + C) colour photolithograph on paper, signed, editioned 44/62, dated 1968 and stamped copyright 21 1/2 x 17 in, 54.6 x 43.2 cm Private Collection, Montreal Gemini G.E.L. 4 Page 4 of 6 Liz Taylor was one of the great icons of the film world, and was a friend of Andy Warhol's in the 1970s and 1980s. Fascinated with the cult of celebrity, Warhol moved in their circles, and became one himself. Warhol was intrigued with the power of the feminine, and Taylor, with her charisma, extravagance and resilience, was a fascinating embodiment of it. Jerry Saltz wrote: "Andy loved women and the power of the feminine, and the women he loved most and best were Marilyn, Jackie and Liz. Many of the paintings made in his heyday, between 1962 and 1965, were of them. Like the women themselves, the pictures of Liz exude a primitive hit of graphic power, stunning color, seething glamour, repressed sexuality and flawed beauty." As he had done with Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol produced both paintings and prints of Taylor - in 1963, he painted a series of 13 works of her, and in all, made over 50 portraits, ranging in image from her child-actress appearance in National Velvet to her screen goddess incarnation in Cleopatra, and from his own photographs. This powerful print, with its saturated colour contrasts dominated by the red background and her ruby lips, embodies Tayor's sensuality and strength. The catalogue raisonné states that this print is from an edition of approximately 300, signed and dated in ball-point pen. This work was published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Please note the condition report for this lot. $12,000 ~ $15,000 CAD $32,500 CAD Lot # 008 Liz (F. & S. 11.7) offset lithograph on paper, signed and dated /8 x 23 1/8 in, 58.7 x 58.7 cm Private Collection, Toronto Edition, 2003, reproduced page 60, catalogue #11.7 The catalogue raisonné states that this print is from an edition of approximately 300, signed and dated in ball-point pen. This lithograph was published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Please note: this work is unframed. $12,000 ~ $15,000 CAD $32,500 CAD Lot # 009 Marilyn (F. & S. II.27) screenprint on paper, 1967
5 Page 5 of 6 on verso signed in pencil and stamped with edition 169/ x 36 in, 91.4 x 91.4 cm Edition, 2003, reproduced page 69, catalogue #11.27 Andy Warhol was a pioneer of Pop Art who changed the way we saw the world. His images from American culture of mass consumerism, presented with utter simplicity, made us become aware and examine that world, from everyday consumer objects such as the Campbell's soup can to incendiary stars such as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor. Monroe died in August of 1962, and for four months after her death Warhol made over 20 silkscreen paintings of her based on a publicity still from the 1953 film Niagara. He had an eye for an unforgettable image, and was fascinated with Monroe and the obsession that the media had with her. She was sexy, vulnerable, talented and tragic - and Warhol had a predilection for themes of death and the cult of celebrity. This extraordinary screenprint is from a portfolio of ten images of Monroe, executed five years after her passing, each one printed in different colour combinations. Most, with the exception of a silver and black one, were brilliant in colour. This print celebrates Monroe's extraordinary star power as captured in the mediums of photography and film, and exudes her presence. It is one of Warhol's most iconic images. The catalogue raisonné states this print was published in an edition of 250 plus 26 Artist's Proofs by Factory Additions, New York. $50,000 ~ $70,000 CAD $75,000 CAD Lot # 010 Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (F. & S ) screenprint on Lenox Museum Board, 1985 signed and editioned 26/40 and on verso stamped Andy Warhol /8 x 31 1/2 in, 100 x 80 cm Equinox Gallery, Vancouver Edition, 2003, reproduced page 142, catalogue # Tate Modern, Queen Elizabeth II, workid=27116, accessed March 31, 2012
6 Page 6 of 6 The catalogue raisonné states this print was published in an edition of 40 plus 10 AP, 5 PP, 3 HC 30 TP. This print was published by George C.P. Mulder, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is from the 1985 portfolio Reigning Queens, which also included images of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. Andy Warhol's image of Elizabeth II was based on a photograph taken for her Silver Jubilee in The Tate online comments on this print, "Warhol presents the Queen as an iconic and overtly glamorous figure. His own lines, added to the photographic image, suggest the stylised makeup of a Hollywood star, associating the portrait with the cult of celebrity that was prevalent in the 1980s." $40,000 ~ $50,000 CAD $47,500 CAD help online auction live auction gallery art index search contact us history news site map home
