1 Page 1 of 6 Online Auction Catalogue Lot # 301 JOHN WILLIAM BEATTY OSA RCA Jasper, Alberta oil on canvas, signed and dated 1915 and on verso signed, titled and dated 12 1/2 x 16 in, 31.7 x 40.6 cm By descent to the present Private Collection, British Columbia In the spring of 1914, John William Beatty and A.Y. Jackson received a commission from the Northern Railway to travel west and paint the Rocky Mountains. The paintings they produced on this trip were to be used in advertising campaigns to promote travel to the Western provinces. Beatty and Jackson traveled west in the summer months of that year, and made the railway camp at Yellowhead Pass their headquarters. Beatty primarily painted from the railway tracks at the stations and from the trains. In August of 1915, Beatty and Jackson's paintings were exhibited at the Northern Railway Building at the National Exhibition. 3 Page 3 of 6 Born in Winnipeg, Lionel Lemoine FitzGerald spent his life there, contributing greatly to the growth of awareness of art in the city. In 1924, he began teaching at Winnipeg's School of Art, and was its Principal from 1929 to FitzGerald had ties with artist friends and colleagues such as Bertram Brooker and Group of Seven members Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson. He exhibited works in two shows with the Group of Seven in 1930 and was invited to become the ninth member of the Group in 1932 when J.E.H. MacDonald died. He was a founding member of its successor, the Group of Painters. Trees often appeared in his paintings, in delicate painterly works such as this and in strongly delineated and stylized works such as the 1931 canvas Doc Snyder's House, in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. Landscape reflects FitzGerald's interest in Impressionism during the 1920s, in its soft pastel hues and use of dabbed brush-strokes of paint, giving the impression of the flickering of light through the leaves. Colour and light dominate in this lovely atmospheric work. FitzGerald's style and technique varied throughout his life; his work later reflected the influences of Pointillism and Cubism, and explorations into abstraction were inspired by German and Russian Constructivism. 4 Page 4 of 6 Lawren Harris's paintings of Lake Superior, the Rocky Mountains and the Arctic increasingly pared landscape elements down to their powerful essentials. Harris's profound interest in Theosophy led him to see the spiritual in nature; the life force that manifests throughout the landscape. Mountains were not just stunning visual images for him, but were also zones of purity and higher frequencies. After his Arctic paintings, Harris underwent a dramatic process of change that led him to abstraction. In 1934 he settled in New Hampshire, which was near to the White Mountains, which Harris considered to be almost Himalayan, and therefore exalted. His painting there was abstract, but natural forms such as mountains were still present, represented by geometrical forms such as triangles. There was a direct link between the triangular mountain forms, the atmosphere and divine light present in the mountains, with the shapes and atmosphere in Harris's abstract work. From 1938 to 1939, Harris lived in Sante Fe, New Mexico, cofounding the Transcendental Painting Group, and his abstract painting there continued to be formal and geometrical. In 1940, he returned to Canada, settling in Vancouver. Here another stage of evolution began; he had seen the work of the American Abstract Expressionists in the late 1940s, and his use of line became more fluid and gestural. LSH 27 is a richly atmospheric painting, with elegantly curving lines defining forms which are given substance by softly brushed colour fields. Abstracted mountain forms rise from dancing fields of energy, and the work strikes a fine balance between vitality of movement and the serenity of the cool blue "sky" at the top.
