2 ANJOLIE ELA MENON 2 Her paintings show deep awareness of the human condition. She portrays Indian people an the human figures mostly. A dominant feature of Menon s work is her strong use of colour which expresses emotional qualities. Through her paintings, she explores feminine consciousness and the position of women in the indian society.

3 MAGICIANS STORY OIL PAINTING In this painting there are many indian references like the tiger and the body of the man which is painted purple, a reference to the many different colors gods are portrayed. Both the men are placed in boxes, which could be a comment on people being categorized by their race as one is clearly indian and the other is anglo- saxon. FESTIVAL FESTIVAL- OIL PAINTING MAGICIAN S STORY This painting consists of three large triangular shapes on a bright textured, purple surface. The triangle shape moves across the canvas as though it is one shape depicted as it falls. The background of this painting is textured through a series of gestural marks, which consists of dots, squiggles and section of colour, as is suggested through the title festival this painting makes reference to the nature of the many festivals that take place in india. 3

4 LAXMAN SHRESHTHA Abstract painter. He principally explores colour and geometrical shapes. His works have evolved from using a variety of colours on a canvas, to one another per artwork, where all the hues and tone of that colour are explored. The painting shown above is shreshtha s reaction to his environment, specifically the himalayan ranges. Through the potential colours have to express emotions and the purity of geometrical shapes, this landscape describes a sense of spiritual awareness of the land. The colours in this paintings describe the physical nature of the land and the feeling the land leaves with it s viewer. 4

5 JAMINI ROY Inspired by both traditional indian folk and village arts and western methods of painting. Many of his themes are around jesus who is a chiristian icon in western society to which he applies aspects of indian traditional arts. E.g. christ incorporated ina a mosaic texture and indian symbols. JESUS WOMAN SEATED WOMAN SWAANA YANESHA typifies his painting style. Combination of western and eastern ideas. The subject matter depicts a traditional indian god and the colours used are also reminiscent of those used in traditional indian painting. CHRIST SWAANAYANESHA 5

6 S.H.RAZA Raza integrates signs and symbols of Indian mythology, For e.g. the significance of certain colours like red, black and yellow and seeks to capture the essence of India. His themes also explore the traditions of Hindu philosophies and the traditional artworks used to represent these. FERTILITY A strong, abstract image. It concentrates on solid geometrical shapes and colours which include black, green, blue and white. As with traditional Indian paintings this artwork incorporates a painted frame which becomes the art also. The centre of the painting is clearly defined and all the lines In the painting emerge from this point. Considering the title fertility, the solid spine could represent a starting point of life from which all other life emerges. 6

7 N.S. BENDRE Pioneer of Indian modern art. Influenced by cubism, expressionism and abstraction and various other trends in mainstream European modernism. The themes of his paintings explore everyday situations of Indian life. VILLAGE GIRLS LOTUS SELLERS A classic example of Bendre s technique. In this painting, 3 women sit dressed in traditional Indian clothing selling lotus flowers. This scene is typical of the streets of India. the colors in this painting are highly representative of India also and mimic the colours used in traditional Indian paintings. LOTUS SELLERS 7
