Founded in 1935 by Amor and her sister Carolina, La Galeria de Arte Mexicano was the first gallery promoting contemporary artists to be established in Mexico City. It represented the work of artists like Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and Frida Kahlo, among many others. The gallery, now known as GAM is directed by Inés's daughter, Mariana Pérez Amor and Alejandra R. de Yturbe. It is not precisely known how this painting came to be in Toronto, but based on the date of the certificate, it was likely purchased by a visitor to Mexico around The stretcher bears the framer's (W. 3 Page 3 of 7 Fernando Botero is from Medellín in Columbia, an isolated but beautiful Spanish town where he had little exposure to art. However his travels, beginning with his training at the Academy in Florence and his great interest in the painting of central Italy, expanded his horizons. He now lives most of the time in New York and Paris. Botero encountered such powerful movements as Abstract Expressionism, but resisted such modernist influences. Rather, he looked back to the work of figurative painters of the Trecento and Quattrocento, while remaining connected to South America in his memories, fantasies and images, expressed in his unique style. His paintings and pastels are known for their strong sense of space and volume, and his distinctive figures for their rotundness. Botero loves beauty, and in people it is not the western concept of beauty in thinness, but that of Spanish-speaking countries, more associated with, as Werner Spies writes, "the roundness of a handsome, well-nourished person." This accentuated corporeality creates a distortion of form. Regarding his intention, Botero stated, "The deformation you see is the result of my involvement with painting. The monumental and, in my eyes, sensually provocative volumes stem from this. Whether they appear fat or not really does not interest me. It has hardly any meaning for my painting. My concern is with formal fullness, abundance. And that is something entirely different." His affinity with painters such as Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Rubens and Ingres included their approach to figures, who as he stated, "all depict figures of a certain fullness." In Homme, Botero's figure casts a cool gaze, not at the viewer, but into space. This was intentional, and Botero declared, "I want the figures to gaze into emptiness. I want to paint people as still lifes." There are recurrent archetypal figures in his work, such as this man, seen in numerous works with his small moustache, close cropped hair, distinctive hat and round face with arched eyebrows. Botero creates a palpable atmosphere of sensuality, which emanates from the fleshy physicality of the man and objects such as the fruit and glass of beer or wine, as well as the rich colouration of pastel, which makes the simple interior sumptuous. A strong element of visual interest is added by the bare lightbulb, which, with its emanation of light, draws the eye to the man's face. 4 Page 4 of 7 The work of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez is committed to the Op Art and Kinetic Art movements. Kinetic Art is based on optical movement and the way in which the viewer is affected by the elemental qualities of colour and form. Cruz-Diez's works, such as this fine painting, are geometric and use strong colours to help create a visual experience and emotional reaction in the viewer without the use of representational imagery. The artist is deeply focused on perception, and centered a series entitled Induction Chromatique around the idea of retinal presistence. Retinal persistence is the phenomenon of the afterimage - when an image still appears even after looking away. Inducción Cromática Serie B 3/4 is from this series, and the strong colour palette and composition carry the viewer's eye from corner to corner on the surface. This work is an excellent example of both retinal persistence and the linear compositions that Cruz-Diez has become internationally renowned for. This auction has multiple sessions. Page # Cruz-Diez has lived in Paris since 1960 but maintains strong ties to his native country, especially his hometown of Caracas, which is inscribed on the verso of this work. In 1997, the Carlos Cruz-Diez Print and Design Museum opened in Caracas, which emphasized education for the public and support for contemporary Venezuelan artists. His works can be found in the permanent collections of important museums and galleries world-wide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The influence of being surrounded by the objects of antiquity is undeniable in his work. While Marini displays a profound understanding of the history of art, his work also embodies the avant-garde in contemporary painting. David Ebony states: "Communicating by means of a personal iconographic system steeped in mythology and classical ideals, Mariani fuses the past with the present in order to illuminate a sometimes unsettling, but always exhilarating future. He evokes the hushed serenity of antiquity and the cacophonous turbulence of modernism, which momentarily in the paintings at least, have reached tentative accord. In reviewing the course of her long career, it is astonishing to realize that she broke most of the rules that could assure her future success as an exhibiting artist and, despite that, succeeded in garnering exceptional acclaim for her paintings and drawings throughout her life. There are many resources available for us to learn the details of Martin's unique biography: her 20-year struggle for recognition; her evolution from figurative to abstract painting; her overwhelming success in exhibiting at Betty Parson's Gallery in New York after 1957; her sudden departure from New York to Santa Fe in 1968 and her withdrawal from art-making for the next seven years. But no written reference can inform us better than a taped interview in the artist's Taos studio by Chuck Smith and Sono Kuwayama in In that conversation, Agnes Martin makes many provocative and profound statements that reveal both her goals and her state of mind as a visual artist, which aid us in knowing how to truly see the intimate, inspired works she created. For Matisse, the printmaking process was personal, and it was an extension of his drawing. The technical process of printing gave him a contrast to his long periods of painting. The personal nature of Matisse's printmaking is visible in his working method. Unlike many artists who depended on close relationships with master printers in their workshops, Matisse had an etching press installed in his studio, allowing him the freedom to print when and how he liked. This intimacy extended to his choice of subjects. Portraits of friends, family and fellow artists, as well as images of female figures and nudes were all part of his repertoire. The most iconic of these were the odalisques influenced by a trip to North Africa, and Odalisque assise à la jupe de tulle from 1924 is an exceptional example.
