Match the Character and their Prop In ballet, there are no words to tell the story. Dancers use mime and dance to tell us how they feel and have special costumes and props to help us understand their characters. Can you match up the name of the character with their mixed up props below? Remember to keep an eye on our website for pictures of the dancers practicing with their costumes and props, and come along to the show to spot them in action! CHARACTER Hansel He is very young and needs comforting PROP Moon Gretel She is good at getting her brother out of trouble or witches traps! Sandman He always carries his magic sleeping dust with him on his back Dew-drop Fairy She flies through the forest protecting lost children Breadcrumbs Cupcake Key Witch She draws the children into the forest at night time Bunny Comforter Teacher She teaches the children how to bake Sack Ravens They follow the children into the forest, eating up anything left behind Wings 3

Forest Maze Help Hansel and Gretel escape from the Witch s Gingerbread House by following the pebbles all the way back through the forest to their home. If you follow the pebbles, you will arrive safely, but be careful the Witch has laid some traps along the way to tempt little children away from the safe path don t get lost! 4

Word Search (ages 6+ with adult) There are ten hidden words in this Word Search below - can you find them all? They are characters or words from our story, and there is another word we have hidden in there too, which is something you might find here at Scottish Ballet. This one is a Secret Password which will help you unlock more magical treats on our website! Go to to find out more... Circle the words you find, and write down the secret password but don t let anyone else see Hansel Gretel Story Witch Moon Forest Raven Ragdoll Sandman Cupcake SECRET PASSWORD B F O R A G C A P E C F M O H A N S E L A F U S S C P V C E H L O O P N T G R E F T L R A N C A O S W N M O E G D A A H R A V I D S C R O M K S Y R N G T A U E O D E A N O A M C C P T M N O D A R M O O N H E G A O N H F S T R M O L A S M S S N D B A L L E R I N A 5

Make your own Comic Strip and Storyboard Choreographers make up the dance moves for the ballet. They can use different ways of getting ideas for their story. Some draw Storyboards, which are a bit like Comic Strips but with the words describing the action at the side instead of speech bubbles. Can you draw the characters for these four Comic Strip scenes below? Then you can make your own Storyboards as well. You can even use these ideas to make your own ballet! COMIC STRIPS Draw the characters for the Comic Strips below. Think about which characters are speaking and what they are doing. You can draw the scenery around them too Scene 1: Lost in the forest Try not to worry let s just get some sleep. Gretel! It s so cold! 6

Scene 2: Hansel and Gretel see something strange What s that through the trees? It looks like a house! Scene 3: A house made of Gingerbread Look! It s covered in sweeties! It looks suspicious to me 7

Scene 4: Sweets galore! Let s try and reach the ones at the top Hansel! I feel sick should we stop? Scene 4: Something wicked this way comes Heeheehee! More yummy children for me to catch! This is better than breadcrumbs Something s not right 8

STORYBOARDS Draw your own Storyboards and tell us what is happening in each. You can draw the characters doing movements just like dancers, or look at our Ballet Mimes activity (p.16) for some ideas. You can stick on extras like fabric for the costumes to make it more exciting! What is happening here? 9

Setting the Scene Before the ballet begins, the curtain comes up on the Opening Scene and the audience sees the Set for the first time. This is like the first picture of a new book, without any characters in it yet. On the next page you will see a picture of the Opening Scene of Act 2, when Hansel and Gretel have fallen asleep in the forest. Can you read the description above the picture and draw in the rest of the Scene? You can draw the characters, other bits of Set or Props, or anything else you like! Remember to make it bright and colourful for your audience Here are some things to think about when you are creating your scene: What characters are in the scene? Where are these characters? How are they feeling? What are they doing? Is there anyone or anything else in your scene? What time of day is it? What will happen next? 10

11

What happened next? You can make up your own version of Hansel & Gretel. We ve given you the beginning of the story; can you tell us what happened next? Fill in the blanks between the sentences, and come along to see the show to find out if your Hansel & Gretel is the same as ours! Hansel and Gretel lived with their parents by the edge of the forest. They were very happy until unfortunately. Hansel and Gretel were alone in the wood and very scared. Night began to fall and it became cold, but fortunately The Witch cackled to herself as she sprinkled icing sugar on Hansel and Gretel ready to eat. They had almost given up hope, when suddenly 12

Crossword (ages 8+ with adult) Can you use the clues to work out the words in this crossword? They are all words you use in ballet or the theatre, and you may have found them in the Fun Pack already. Once you have filled in all the words, the letters in yellow boxes make up a Secret Password which will unlock more magical treats on our website! This password is something from our story of Hansel & Gretel. We ve helped you by putting in some of the letters already. Fill in the words you work out, and write down the secret password but don t let anyone else see SECRET PASSWORD _B C S_

Ballet Mimes When ballet dancers are on stage they can t speak, so they need to use their hands and bodies to tell the story. They can do this through their dancing, or through a special language you use your hands to speak this is called Mime. Can you learn the Mimes below? You can try and learn them with your friends and family and see if you can make up a story with them just like the dancers or even make up your own Mimes too! Dance: stretch your arms up above your head, gently curving to make a circle (this is called fifth position) then circle your hands around each other. Crying: run your hands, palms inward, down your face like tears Love: cross your hands over your heart. 15 Continue to next page

Order/Command: point a finger straight to the floor with confidence (and a bossy face!) Promise: hold up your hand with your index (pointing) finger and middle finger pressed together and the rest of the fingers curled shut in a fist. Death: hold your hands clenched into fists and cross your wrists low in front of you (you can be as dramatic as you like!) Beauty: run your hand in a circle around your face and close it at the end Continue to next page 16

King/Queen/ Prince/Princess/Royalty: place an imaginary crown on your head with two straight hands. Sleeping: press your palms together and lay your head on them as if on a pillow Engaged/Married: point to your ring finger. 18 Forest Ice Decorations We often make decorations for indoors, but what about outside Why not make these Decorations to hang in your garden? Or you could leave them in your local park or forest for other people to enjoy too! ADULT SUPERVISION You will need Freezer-proof bowls - any size Some string or wool Things you have found from the forest floor these can be leaves, twigs, feathers, acorns, shells, pebbles anything you like! What to do 1. Boil a kettle of water, leave until the water is cold, and then boil again. This makes sure there are no air bubbles in the water, so your sculpture will be clear. 2. Put your bowls next to each other and the string across them all. The string needs to touch the bottom of each bowl and have plenty left at the end for hanging your decoration up later. 3. Place one Forest object in each bowl, resting it on top of the string. 4. Making sure it has cooled right down, pour the water from the kettle into the bowls until all your objects are covered 5. Put your bowls in the freezer overnight for the sculpture to freeze. 6. Take out the bowls and put them into some cold water. This will melt them a tiny amount, and make it easy to get them out! 7. Hang up your sculpture outside by the long end of the string and enjoy your Forest Decorations! You can experiment with different sizes of bowl, and with different numbers of objects. 18

Origami Gingerbread House (ages 6+ with adult) To start making your Gingerbread House, you need a piece of Origami paper. This can be any square piece of paper that is a different colour on each side. 1. Make sure your Origami paper is face down. This means that the side that you want to be on the outside, is at the bottom. 2. Fold your piece of paper in half horizontally and crease gently. Unfold it so it is flat again. Then fold the whole thing in half vertically and crease gently. Unfold it so it is flat. Your paper should have four smaller square sections. 3. Fold the bottom half up until it meets the middle line, and then fold the top half down to the same middle line so the two flaps meet in the middle. 4. Turn your Origami over so that you hide the two flaps. Continue to next page 19

Origami Gingerbread House continued 5. Fold the right half in to the middle line. Do the same with the left half. 6. Gently pry open the top right corner and flatten down. Do the same with the top left corner 7. Turn it around and stand it up now it s time to decorate it! 20

Origami Raven (ages 8+ with adult) To start making your Raven, you need a piece of Origami paper. This can be any square piece of paper that is a different colour on each side. The Raven is made in three stages Stage 1: Square Base, Stage 2: Diamond Base, Stage 3: Raven. Stage 1: Square Base 1. 3. Turn your paper over. Fold along both diagonal lines (corner to corner) and crease gently. Unfold so it is flat again Continue to next page 21

Origami Raven continued 4. Turn your paper over. Take the four corners and bring them together, then flatten so that the whole piece of paper collapses into your Square Base! Continue to next page 22

Origami Raven continued Stage 2: Diamond Base 1. Place your Square Base so that all the open corners are at the bottom facing you. 2. Fold the Left corner into the middle (there should be a faint crease line to help you). Crease it down well. Do the same with the Right corner 3. Fold down the top corner and crease it well. Then unfold all three of the last folds Continue to next page 23

Origami Raven continued 4. Pull the bottom corner upwards and fold in along the crease lines to make a diamond 5. Turn your Origami over and repeat these 4 steps on the other side now you have a Diamond. Continue to next page 24

Origami Raven continued Stage 3: Raven 1. Place your Diamond Base so that the two flaps separated down the middle are pointing towards you 2. Fold the Left flap up to make a leg that points straight out to the left. Do the same with the Right flap. 3. Fold the top triangle down over the two legs. 25 Continue to next page

Origami Raven continued 4. Fold the Right side of your Origami behind the Left side, so the whole thing is folded in half vertically and the legs are on the inside pointing left 5. Make a small bird s head by pulling the top corner down and so that it folds inside the sides of the neck 6. Decorate your Raven and put him somewhere where he can balance. Or maybe fly away! 26

CONE TEMPLATE CHARACTER TEMPLATES 28

Inside Out Gingerbread House The house that Hansel and Gretel find is covered with the most amazing sweets and treats, but inside it is shabby and dark. Can you decorate the two houses below so that the picture of the outside is beautiful and inviting, but the other is gloomy and scary? You can cut them both out and make a set for your Hansel and Gretel puppets by sticking them onto some strong card that will stand up while you re-tell the story in your own way 29

We d love to see how you decorate these pictures how imaginative can you be? Send us pictures of your Gingerbread House in action and we might even put them on the website! 30

Gingerbread Children How about making a Gingerbread Hansel and Gretel, or the missing children from the story? You can decorate them to give them costumes, like the dancers, or create your own Ingredients ADULT SUPERVISION NEEDED 350g plain flower 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 100g unsalted butter 175g soft light brown sugar 1 egg 4 tablespoons of golden syrup Decorations you can use writing icing, sprinkles, crushed nuts, raisins, whatever you like! Preparations Preheat the oven to 200 pc /Gas Mark 6 (180 pc/gas Mark 4 for a fan ovens) Put a layer of greaseproof paper on a baking tray ready for your Gingerbread Children Remember to wash your hands and put on an apron! Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Sieve the plain flour, ground ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl, and then use your finger to rub in the butter until it looks like a bowl of breadcrumbs. Stir in the light brown sugar. Warm up another mixing bowl (run it under the hot tap for a minute) and put in the egg and golden syrup and beat together. Pour the wet mix into the dry mix from Step 1 and stir into one large ball of dough. Knead your dough until it is smooth and stretchy, and roll it out until it is about 5mm thick. Use the cutters to make the shapes of your gingerbread children. Put these in the fridge for an hour to set. Put your Gingerbread Children on the baking tray and into the oven; they will take minutes to cook. Once they are cooked, put them onto a wire rack to cool down for about 10 minutes before decorating. If you enjoyed baking these Gingerbread Children, why not take a look at our Wee Recipe Pack and try something else? 31
