1 ACTIVITIES BY GENESIANS PG 6 ISAAC ASIMOV PG 7 ROBOTICS EXCHANGE WITH GERMANY VEX COMPETITION PG 5 EUREKA Advanced Rocketry Workshop On 13th Feb. 2015, the astronomy group of module 2 had their 5th section, advanced rocketry. It was organised by ZLIFE EDUCATION. The rockets were not only made by the students of the school but also by the German exchange students. Then the session began, everybody was exited to know about the type of advance type of rocketry. We were told that this time in rocketry we would be inserting an parachute in the rocket. After some time they explained how to make the rocket and also told about centre of mass of an object.!1
2 After the theory lesson we were given the materials to make the rocket like 2 empty bottles of 2l, cello tape, fevi quick, electricians tape, bottle cap with a hole in the centre, thread, hook, rubber bands, permanent markers, big plastic polythene, clay, and a metal ring. How did we make it? More Photographs of the workshop We took the bottle cap with the hole in the centre and tied a 15 inch thread. We took one of the bottles, which was in good condition, and we placed a bottle cap and stuck it using fevi quick and left it for drying for ten minutes. Then we took the other bottle and cut it approximately 1/3 towards the cap and filled one strip of clay towards the cap to change the centre of mass. We took the first bottle again and applied 3 strips of clay to balance the centre of mass towards the top. Then we took the polythene and marked 8 points on the circumference with equal distance. We put some electrician tape to cover the hole and make the polythene strong. We made holes at each point made. We had tied 8 equal knots of threads from the hole to the centre approximately equal distances. We tied all of the threads with the metal ring in the order we had tied the thread with the circumference. We left the parachute aside and took the first bottle again and stuck the fins to it with cello tape on the bottom towards the cap. We took the 3 rubber band which we got and tied them to each other to make a chain. We tied it with a hook which was stuck with the bottle with cello tape with equal distance from the top of the bottle. Now we took the half cut bottle and tried to fit it on the base of the first bottle where the cap was stuck so that the parachute could come out when the rocket has to come down. The other end of the rubber band was stuck to the half cut bottle s cap with electrician tape. Tie the ring tied with the parachute to the thread tied from the bottle cap to fix it with rocket. Fold it with such a way so that it opens while coming down. Now put the cut bottle on its place and get prepared to launch it. On 13th Feb. 2015, the astronomy group of module 2 had their 5th section, advanced rocketry. It was organised by ZLIFE EDUCATION. The rockets were not only mad by the students of the school but also by the German exchange students.!2
3 Editorial Column This issue of Eureka-The Science magazine comes at a time when all the students of GGS are the most studious ones. This magazine hopefully will give the necessary break from the text book to look for some respite yet at the same time keep the thinking cap on. The present issue is a collection of activities in the science world of GGS and various club activities. The Robotics club keeping its banner high went on International exchange program, this time with Germany. There have been interesting developments in the Astronomy club with advanced course workshop an added bonanza for the club members. Meanwhile another club that has been toiling quietly yet contributing significantly towards the environment with its Re-Use and Re-Cycle motto is the Tod-Fod-Jod club. Keeping our tradition that we started with our first issue the present one pays a tribute to Sir Isaac Asimov The world famous Science Fiction author. Along with his legacy of four hundred books that he left behind in the year 1992, he also was the Director of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine During the fifteen years he was Editorial Director of the magazine he blessed it with a regular editorial, personal replies in the letters column, and a fine assortment of his own fiction. The Science Department wishes all the students of GGS success. ~MS. JAYATI BHATTACHARJEE Robotics Exchange with Germany!3

7 Isaac Asimov Born on January 2, 1920 in Russia, Isaac Asimov was an American writer specializing in the genre of science fiction. He is considered one of the three great masters of Science fictions and remained a significant figure of science fiction for over five decades. Also a professor of biochemistry at Boston University, Isaac Asimov has over 500 published volumes. He was the son of Judah Asimov and Anna Asimov who immigrated to the United States when Isaac was three. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Asimov s childhood was spent reading passionately. He explored all the libraries within his reach and was a perfect description of the term bookworm. Asimov graduated from Columbia University in 1939 with a degree in chemistry and then also obtained a PhD from the same university in He later accepted the offer of lectureship at Boston University where he was made an associate professor of biochemistry in Night fall, a short story Asimov wrote in 1941 proved to be his ladder to literary success. The story is based on a planet where night appears only once in every 2049 years. Till now it is considered by some to be the best science fiction short story ever to surface. His first book, Pebble in the Sky was published in His most famous set of novels is a trilogy namely Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation ( ). This space based trilogy narrates the tale of a futuristic galactic empire. I Robot (1950) which was also filmed in 2004 is another brilliant piece of work by Asimov which focuses on developing rules and ethics for artificially intelligent machines. Note: The students are encouraged to read these masterpieces and get hooked to Science Fiction. Happy Reading!
