Demonstrate the usage of gear pullers, hydraulic presses, and arbor presses F. Demonstrate the correct procedure and usage of valve stem grinders and valve seat grinders G. Explain the reason for boring an engine cylinder and the correct procedure H. Explain the possible use of a lathe in the power equipment shop I. Identify, maintain, and demonstrate the use of air driven tools such as impact wrenches, J. die grinders, tire inflation devices, and lifts K. Identify and demonstrate the proper use of specialty tools as outlined in the repair manual Reading 11/ L. Remove a broken bolt using the proper drill bit and stud extractor Reading 9/ M. Replace a set of damaged threads with the correct set of Helicoil replacement threads using a tap and die set VIII. Basic Operating Principles 5 hrs A. Specialized Small Engine Repair Tools and Testing Equipment 8 hours A. Determine the correct measuring tool for the test and demonstrate its usage including: NumberSense micrometers, bore gauges, dial caliper, dial indicator, plastigauge, and feeler gauges. B. Lap a valve to determine if the valve is seating correctly C. Demonstrate use of a valve seat cutter kit D. Demonstrate correct use of a steam cleaner and part washer E. Remove pits of paint and rust with a bead blaster XI. Small Engine Troubleshooting and Diagnosis 11 hrs A. Use the easy/likely troubleshooting method to determine fuel delivery is sufficient Invest&Experi 1.a,c,d,f,j,l B. Use the easy/likely method to determine adequate spark CTE Ag&NR F5.0 C. Use the easy/likely method to determine adequate charge being returned to the battery CTE Ag Mech 3.2 D. Visually inspect air cleaner elements for effectiveness CTE Ag Mech 11.6 F. Use easy/likely troubleshooting to determine sufficient air/fuel mixture and air flow in the carburetor G. Measure power train O RPMs in relation to engine RPMs to determine correct gear reduction Physics 5.a,b,f,g,h XII. Engine Tune-up Procedures 8 hours A. Gap and clean spark plug B. Clean poles, inspect plug wire for damage, set air gap between magneto and flywheel CTE Ag Mech 10.5 C. Demonstrate the procedure for retrofitting point ignition system CTE Ag Mech 10.6 D. Demonstrate the procedure for setting timing on both plain bearing crankcases and ball bearing crankcases. E. Inspect valve face and valve seat for pitting F. Use valve lapper with fine grit to determine if valve is seating correctly G. Inspect air filter foam/ oil type element for signs of failure. Clean and replace as necessary H. Inspect paper element type air filter for signs of failure then clean and replace as necessary I. Flush and replace radiator fluids J. Clean and inspect cooling fins in the radiator XIII. Engine Overhaul Procedures 65 hours A. Follow correct overhaul procedure as outlined in a repair manual B. Test systems using the correct procedures and equipment as outlined in repair manual CTE Ag Mech 3.2 C. Hone cylinder as necessary CTE Ag Mech 10.4 D. Bore cylinder to appropriate dimensions CTE Ag Mech 10.5 E. Inspect bearings and bushings for signs of wear and replace as necessary CTE Ag Mech 10.6 F. Evaluate governor system for performance and replace governor springs as necessary CTE Ag Mech 11.6 G. Set top no-load speed as determined by engine specifications Physics 5.a,b,f,g,h H. Inspect oil dripper, oil slinger, or oil pump for damage. I. Inspect journal surfaces on the crankshaft for wear or wiping, clean or replace J. Install crankshaft per repair manual and check endplay with dial indicator K. Check piston ring gaps for wear against reject chart; replace if necessary L. Install camshaft per repair manual and set timing to timing gear M. Check valves for pitting and correct seating with valve lapper; cut or grind valves as needed N. Check valve /tappet clearance with a leaf-type feeler gauge and replace if needed O. Check breather for wear with wire-type gauge and replace if needed P. Overhaul rewind starter Q. Test and repair electrical starting system using appropriate testing equipment and procedures XIV. Cleaning and Storing Engines A.
