The students showed everyone all the different water fountains around school and also the biggest tower of USC. One of the student supervisors also talked about the Viterbi School of Engineering and it was nice. At the end, everyone was served hamburgers, chips, water, and granola bars. By Reuben G. Amazing Tour of USC USC has a ton of buildings including long and giant ones which makes it look like it is a city. It also looks like a city because there are doctors, schools, libraries, and even a building for musical instruments. People can walk around the college and see the beautiful neighborhood. When you go take a tour of USC, you will feel really tired because of all the walking By David O. USC Trojan Excursion When you come to USC you will see a really big tower which had a giant globe on the tip of the tower. It looked really cool. You would wish that you could go in it. They have a lot of libraries. One is open 24/7 while one closes early on Sunday because it is old. The campus has a lot water fountains, which are everywhere you walk. There are also a lot of tall towers and a lot of buildings. All the towers, water fountains, and buildings were cool. USC is a great college to visit. 5 Volume 5, Issue 2 A Trip to Egypt: The Egyptian Theater By David P. he Egyptian Theater in T Hollywood hosted the return of Stars Wars VI: Return of The Jedi on May 4th to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The Egyptian Theater had an Egyptian look. There were hieroglyphics on the outside of the theater. Before entering the theater, there were four ladies, who were artists and all them were doing face painting. By getting in line you could have a character from Stars Wars on your face, like Darth Vader, Chewbacca, C3P0, Storm Trooper, and Yoda. These ladies were professionals; they would do their work really fast in order to get to every one who was in line. They only had one rule though, one face paint per person. Going thru the doors into the theater was normal; nothing like the outside. When you enter through the doors to take your seat to watch the movie, it was back to the Egyptian theme. On the ceiling there was a gold scarab, with a lot gold decorations around it. If you are interested in Egypt, watch a movie at the Egyptian Theater. Return of the Jedi is a winner By Joseph D. hen anyone wants to W go to see a good movie, they expect to see action. They want to see a fight between good and evil. Going to a Star Wars movie means there will be action. The good guys will take on the bad guys. The best part of the Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi, has to be the light saber battle. It is a scene where a Jedi fights against a member from the Dark Side, like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Both of them had reasons to fight each other, and even though they were a family, that did not stop them. They were serious about fighting each other, because every time they swung their light sabers, they would cut something around the room. Each one of them had mastered the use of the force and their light sabers and used their abilities to try to win. Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi, is a must-see if you haven t seen it. Page 5

6 ROOSEVELT TIMES Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi is Awesome By Isabel F. tar Wars VI: Return of S The Jedi was a good movie. Let me rephrase that, it was an awesome movie! Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi was shown on May 4th 2013, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. This was a very loud experience, the speakers were set on high, and it felt like we were part of the movie. The movie had lots of characters and situations. A character that was funny looking was Jabba the Hutt. He is some evil giant slimy slug, who gives the heroes some trouble at the beginning of the movie. Another funny part of the movie was when Luke faced off against the Rancor. It was a giant creature, who had a heavy handler. Even though the scene was supposed to be sad, it was kind of funny seeing the bond between the Rancor and its handler. If you find yourself in Hollywood on your weekend stop by the Egyptian Theater, and watch Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi. Entertainment Weekly I even got to interview a writer from Entertainment Weekly, Geoff Boucher, who was there to see Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi with us and who introduced the movie. What I asked Mr. Boucher was What word do you have for young writers? He answered, The great thing about writing is that every day is different, that s why it so special. I was amazed how many people had so many good questions. One little girl questioned Mr. Boucher, Did you meet Justin Bieber? He responded Yes, many times. Mr. Boucher said he loved his job. Now I know why! Star Wars Colorful Characters By Leslie C. Emperor Palpatine A movie s characters are what can make it or break it. Usually there are some characters that will be liked and those who will be disliked. Each character tells their story about who they are. It is all up to the viewer; they are the ones who make those decisions.. Stars Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, was rather spooky, because of the alien creatures in the movie. Humans and the aliens working together or fighting against each other, made the movie interesting. The alien creatures made some of parts of the movie sad and funny, like the Ewoks. They seem like mini versions of Chewbacca; they are both Ewoks hairy, and they can t speak the human language. They were funny when they joined together with the Rebel Alliance, but it was sad seeing Ewoks get attacked by stormtroopers. Some characters are evil, like the Emperor who wanted to destroy the Rebel Alliance by trying to get Luke Skywalker to join the Dark Side of the force. Return of the Jedi is a great movie to watch because of all its different characters that you won t find in any other movie. Page 6

7 Volume 5, Issue 2 Entertainment Weekly s Geoff Boucher By Joanna A. and Isabel F. tar Wars VI: Return of the S Jedi was a thrilling movie to watch. It was full of action and comedy. The people responsible of bringing back this classic were from Entertainment Weekly. Entertainment Weekly is a magazine that focuses on TV and movies. Geoff Boucher is one of the people responsible of making this event possible. He is a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly and a fan of the Star Wars movies. Mr. Boucher began his adventures in writing with his first topic being about How to collect comic books. He has met many interesting celebrities, like the very popular Justin Bieber. He has also been at the Oscars twelve times since he has been with Entertainment Weekly. The advice that Mr. Geoff Boucher has for a young writer is that every day is different, in other words, make every day count. A New Spin on Return of the Jedi By Daisy M. A long, long, time ago, Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi was first released in theaters 30 years to be exact. I would have never watched a Star Wars movie since I wasn t even born. Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi was so fascinating! I was able to see how life in space could be so cool, yet so sad. The movie told the story of Luke Skywalker and his journey through space where he meets many villains like Jabba the Hutt, his father Darth Vader, and the Darth Sidious. We also meet his friends and allies like Princess Leia, and Han Solo with Chewbacca. In this movie, Luke is finally a Jedi because of Yoda, and now he is ready to face the dark side of the Force. The movie had many different out-of-this-worldcharacters with many different costumes. There were many kinds of spaceships like the Millennium Falcon and TIE fighters. Even though the movie looked old, the graphics looked futuristic. This was the first Star Wars movie I ve seen, making it the best. Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker Egyptian Theater and Return of the Jedi By Julissa A. he Egyptian theater T hosted the return of Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi. Before seeing the movie, there were four face painters. You could choose from many of the Star War s characters like Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, and Yoda. There were also a lot of people that attended the event at the Egyptian Theater dressed as characters from Star Wars. Once inside the theater, it was decorated like something an Egyptian pharaoh s royal room would look like. They played old commercials featuring toys from Star Wars characters and scenes. The people responsible for the whole event were Entertain- ment Weekly. They showed a short film about what kind of impact that Star Wars has on the older generations. This was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw, and it was very exciting to watch. Chewbacca and the Ewoks were the funniest characters in the movie. The light saber battles were awesome. Chewbacca Page 7

8 ROOSEVELT TIMES The Story of Return of the Jedi Jabba the Hutt By Kayla M. tar Wars: Return of The S Jedi, is a good movie to watch if you are interested in action and cute little teddy bear aliens. All the action revolves around Luke Skywalker; he is the last of Jedi. He was trained by a little green alien named Yoda. Luke wants to stop the Dark Side, and to do so he has to face his father Darth Vader. The best part of the movie is when they face off, and Luke ends up saving his father. Luke removes his mask and you are able to see this real face finally. The Ewoks are the funniest aliens in Stars Wars; they look like teddy bears. One of them even helps out Princess Leia, and shows her his home. They are not always cuddly like teddy bears; they can be tough when they are in a large group. A scary character in the movie was Jabba the Hutt; he would treat everyone in his cave mean. Jabba would open a trap door on one of his singers, probably because she sang awful. If you go to see Star Wars VI: Return of The Jedi, you ll enjoy a great movie.. Return of the Jedi s 30th Anniversary Screening at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on May 4, 2013 Thank you to the journalists and publicists from Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm, and Starwars.com for participating in the interview session. 10 ROOSEVELT TIMES Drawing is Fun By Shamonte rawing is fun because D the person who is drawing can create all sorts of different things, from Hello Kitty to stars! Other fun things to draw are books, styles or purses. As an artist, it is possible to draw anything in the world, as long as you use your imagination! Even though Hello Kitty is hard to draw, it is fun to draw her, because she is very cute, and her bow is very pretty. Stars are also fun to draw, because they are very easy to draw. It is also fun to make things up while drawing, like a flying pig with wings, or a queen with all her royal clothes. Styles are the best to draw, because anything goes! Purses are also easy to draw, because they are made up of basic shapes. Books are the easiest to draw because they are only rectangles and lines, to show the pages. Drawing is the best activity, because you can draw anytime, and anywhere. Giving to the Homeless By Heaven T. t s important because when I you give to the homeless they ll probably give to you and that s helping each other; don t you like giving or helping one another? If you don t know, you should give it a try. Giving makes you feel kind and not a pitiful person. Giving is a wonderful thing to do. Even a penny or a dollar makes a difference. Ice Cream By Jayla ce cream is yummy because I it tastes sweet and it makes peoples mouths cold. People like having ice cream because it comes from cows and it has flavors like vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream, and rainbow sherbet. Back in the day, to make ice cream, people had to turn a If you give to the homeless, your blessing will be the good feeling that you get. Some things you could give to a homeless shelter are gently used clothes and donations of money, food, and volunteer help. Giving to the homeless is a good thing because if you become homeless others will probably give to you. pole in a bucket filled with milk, cream and sugar. Now, it can be bought in buckets at a store. If you smash a banana, you can put it in the freezer. Then, you can take it out and put chocolate on it and eat it. It will taste exactly like ice cream. Did you know giving to the homeless is actually a good thing because you are helping others? Maybe if they have a little help, they may not be homeless in the future. Giving to the homeless is a great thing because you can tell your friends and family about giving to the homeless and hope that others will want to help too. Ice cream from Rite Aid is delicious because they have a variety of flavors. One good flavor is Birthday Cake, because it has sprinkles on it with different flavors. It also tastes like actual birthday cake! Most ice cream shops sell this flavor, so you might want to give it a try. Page 10

12 ROOSEVELT TIMES The Beatles By Elissa E. he Beatles were an English rock band, and al- T though two of them are dead, their music lives on. The members were Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison. George Harrison died in 2001 and John Lennon died in The band formed in their hometown of Liverpool, England in They became very popular in Britain, and then became a hit in the United States. When they started out, they were called the Quarrymen, but their leader, John Lennon, changed them to the Beatles. The band was a big hit in the 60s with some people saying they were the most successful band of all time. Their music is still listened to by many people and is still praised for good lyrics and sound. Abbey Road is one of their most well-known albums, and their best-selling album was Rubber Soul. Their best-selling song was Yellow Submarine. The Characters in Victorious By Camille I n t h e T V s h o w Victorious, the main character is Victorious. Her friends are Cat, Beck, Jade, Robbie, Rex, and Andre. Trina, her parents, and her teacher also make appearances in the show. Each of her friends does interesting things. Andre can sing, dance, and play the piano well. Cat can also sing, and, in the show, she does whatever she wants to do. Trina, however, is annoying and does not do a lot of things. Beck is Jade s boyfriend and they are always hanging out with each other. Rex and Robbie are a little weird, because Rex always blurts out every secret he is told and Robbie is a nerd. The teenagers teacher, Mr. Sikowitz, is interesting because he is always drinking coconut milk and takes his shoes off in the classroom. Finally, Victorious can dance and sing, and sometimes she enjoys singing out to the world. This is a fun show that I think you will enjoy watching. 13 Volume 5, Issue 2 Chinese New Year By Samantha N. hinese New Year is a day C some Asian people celebrate. The adults give out money to the kids because it gives them luck. At church and Vietnamese school, the students, teachers, and parents all dance, but not together. The green scarves dance together, the yellow scarves dance together, the teachers all dance together, and the parents dance together. The dads do funny plays. The dancers wear ao dai, special traditional Vietnamese dresses. When you dance, you get money from the priest. Doing the dances take a lot of time and work; each practice is 3 or 4 hours long. Some foods people eat during Chinese New Year include mu yo (sausage), spring rolls, a sweet-tasting bread, and grilled shrimp. Another thing about Chinese New Year is the importance of the color red. That s why the adults give the kids money in red envelopes. It s really rude to open the envelopes in front of anybody, so when you get one, you have to wait until you are alone to open it yourself. These fun things are why Chinese New Year is such a great holiday. Valentine s Day By Daisy t s the most wanted celebration for most people. Every- I body thinks of flowers, chocolate, pick, red, hearts, and family. It s the month of love, when people give cards, chocolate, and flowers to one another. It s the month of happiness, cheer, and joy! But it s one day out of the year when people can show their love to one another. Most people go crazy over it and some, not so much. Did you know Valentines were named after a guy named Sam Valentines and it was made by a company named Johnson & Family Company? Most people stuck with it and they started creating more and more of it. Most people go broke to get something for their loved ones or they spend a lot. Most people crave strawberries covered with chocolate. A lot of people crave chocolate covered things in Valentines. Valentines have a lot of pink, red, and everybody knows, love. Did you know most people use red flowers instead of flowers of other colors? What is Your Favorite Holiday? What is your favorite holiday? Do you like birthdays? A lot of kids like to have a party with their friends, get lots of presents, and eat cake. A lot of kids like Halloween, because it s a time when you can dress up and put on lots of fun makeup. Other popular holidays are Christmas and Hanukah - there is usually a lot of family, a lot of good food, and a lot of presents. What about Easter? Who doesn t like an Easter egg hunt,.for all these holidays, it s good to remember why the holidays came about. None of them were about getting lots of presents! Page 13

16 ROOSEVELT TIMES JUNE 2013 RAP Roundup By Abraham Hernandez, RAP Program Leader and PressFriends Advisor he school T year has come and gone, and now summer is already here! Let me say this, it went by pretty quick. Even though it may have seemed a pretty short year, it was full of laughter and new experiences. I would like to thank everyone who has made the Roosevelt Times possible. To all of our students who took their time and effort out their other clubs and contributed to the club, thank you. I also owe a big thank you to Maggie Guillen and Elena Rodrigue for allowing me to continue with Roosevelt Times. The biggest thanks goes to PressFriends; they have allowed us to take a part of new experiences this year. Without them this newspaper club would have not been possible. They have brought another year full of knowledge and with opportunities for lots of new field trips. I greatly appreciate all the mentors who took the time with our students on every Friday. It was because of the mentors that our students would be thrilled and would count the days until they would meet again with their mentors. As for school year we can t wait for it to begin. It will bring together new and returning students but also a new year of RAP and PressFriends. Hopefully there will be another year of me continuing to mentor students on the Roosevelt Times. Note from PressFriends By Luke Southwell, President, PressFriends Student Advisory Board D id you know that PressFriends has been working with your afterschool newspaper club for five years, and we ve been working with Mr. Abraham for four of those years?
