During the war in Iraq, Saddam Hussein's forces ignited hundreds of oil wells in Kuwait. Smoke belched from the torched wells fo r many m onths afterwards. Satellite photos showed a black-grey plume swept south from Kuwait as far south as the Arabian Sea equal to the distance from Manhattan to the tip of Florida. Meanwhile, the invasion of Iraq caused destruction estim ated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. M onths after the American m ilitary forces freed Kuwait City, the effects of war were still evident. 136 The coup in the Soviet Union began on August 19, An eight-m an com m ittee led by Vice President Gennady Yanayev to o k pow er from President Mikhail S. Gorbachev. Tanks and other m ilita ry gear moved into Moscow as Russian President Boris Yeltsin called on Russians to resist the coup. On Tuesday, August 20, President George Bush was joined by the European Com m unity and demanded Gorbachev s return to power. Three of the leaders of the new eight-man ruling com m ittee were said to step down. On Wednesday, August 21, the leaders of the coup were reported to have fled Moscow. Tanks and arm ored personnel carriers moved away from Russian Parliam ent and leaders of the national legislature dem anded th a t G orbachev be re tu rn e d to pow er. The C om m u n ist P arty denounced the takeover. On Thursday, August 22, Gorbachev returned to Moscow before dawn and reassumed his position as President of the Soviet Union. He was not able to regain his previous authority, however. Gorbachev disbanded the Com m unist Party and throughout the republics of the USSR, nationalist m ovem ents took advantage of th e ir new freedom. One by one, the republics declared their independence from the Soviet Union. In Moscow, Boris Yeltsin, President of the Russian republic, com m anded Secretary of State James A. Baker III was President Bush s representative on dozens of diplom atic trips around the world but prim arily to the Middle East. A peace conference in the Middle East was his prim ary mission. A lasting peace in the Middle East has been a goal of many presidents, but President Bush was hopeful th a t it would become a reality during his adm inistration. vast popular support a fte r his brave protests to the August coup. Riding a wave of popularity and nationalist fe r vor he continually challenged Gorbachev's authority as m ore and m ore of the re p u b lics abandoned th e c ru m b lin g central governm ent. On December 6, P resident Yeltsin of Russia and the presidents of the Ukraine and Byelorus announced th e ir intention to create a new Com m onwealth of Independent States. The Com m onwealth would be open to all of the previous Soviet republics and possibly to other nations, as well. Gorbachev and his Soviet governm ent were left out as negotiations began between the form er republics. The main issue under consideration was the distribution of the USSR's nuclear missiles located within the boundaries of the new independent republics. In the Russian republic, Yeltsin dem anded th a t G orbachev step down from his position as leader of the USSR and give the Krem lin to Russia's national governnm ent. As 1992 began on January 1, the ham m er and sickle flag of the Soviet Union was lowered fo r the last tim e over the tsar's old fortress. In its place, the new Russian flag fluttered over the Kremlin in Moscow. Michael Jordan flew through the air w ith the greatest of ease. 137 P re s id e n t Bush n o m in a te d C la re n c e Thomas, a 43-year-old conservative Republican, to the Supreme Court. Nearly three m onths later he was confirm ed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 52-48, after a series of tu m u ltu o u s and fie ry public hearings. Just days before the full Senate was to vote, some serious allegations of sexual harassment were raised. Professor Anita Hill, a 35-yearold law professor from the University of Oklahoma and form er assistant fo r Thomas at the E.E.O.C., claimed she was the victim of sexual harassment while the tw o worked together about 10 years earlier. The Senate com m ittee reconvened and heard about three days of riveting testim ony from Thomas and Hill and a group of supporters from both sides. As the school year began in Septem ber, 1991, President George Bush was trying to get his nominees to the Supreme Court (Clarence Thomas) and the C.I.A. (R obert Gates) successfully through the co n firm ation process. But two of his m ajor tasks were peace in the Middle East and a lingering recession at hom e in the United States. And w ith a presidential election around the corner, the president was p u tting together his re-election team. Barbara Bush was constantly in the public eye as the wife of the President of the Unites States. But in quieter tim es, the 66- year-old grandm other says she yearns fo r the day when she and the president can spend more tim e doing selfish things with one another and their grandchildren. However, fo r now she is content to be the First Lady of the United States. One of the many rallying points fo r in te r national environm entalists was the Brazilian rain forest. Thousands of square m iles of fo re s t w ere being cut down and env iro n m e n ta lis ts fro m around the w orld petitioned governm ents, h e ld ra llie s and led m arches to stop the devastation. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the body-building, action-adventure actor, was a big hit in the highly successful movie Term inator 2: Judgem ent Day. At a cost of more than $90 million, it was the m ost expensive m ovie ever made. Schwarzenegger is shown in this photo in front of an image of his wife, Maria Shriver.

174 Halloween For the first time, the entire school celebrated Halloween to g e th e r in one stupendous spectacle. Dressed as robots, vam pires, dancers, explorers and a bunch of grapes, the lower and middle schoolers paraded into the gym. Behind them marched the faculty dressed as the Supreme C ourt (including newly confirm ed Judge T h o m a s ) and a c o m p le te baseball team. Then cam e the main event: the upper school Halloween c o m p e tition. Each grade p e rfo rm e d as a group presenting a single theme. The Freshmen dram atized the epic poem Casey at the Bat in the best

175 Pageant 1992 freshman presentation in recent PDS history. The Juniors created a Purgatory gam e show and a host of heavenly (or otherwise) beings. The S o p h o m o re s, th e second place winners, recreated the sounds of a rainstorm inside the gym, then revealed a stunning rainbow to win a very deserved second prize. The blue ribbon, however, w ent to the Class of '92 for the second year in a row. They are the first class ever to win back-to-back. The winning prese n ta tio n w as W h e re s W a ld o " brought to life. The amazing sets and inventive them e carried the Senior class to victory.

196 Seen in the Spokesman Highlights fro m the PDS Newspaper Students Among First to See New Soviet Union by Daniel Weiner and staff The PDS Russian Exchange trip will take place in spite of the world-shaking overthrow of power in the Soviet Union and the disintegration of com m unism. Mr. Skvir, an upper school Russian teacher and the director of all exchange programs, will take a group of ten PDS students to Moscow from November seventh to November thirtieth. This trip was originally scheduled for late August and early September. Mr. Skvir went to Washington Friday, October 4, to confer with group leaders of other student visits to the form er USSR and with State Departm ent officials. We now have a staff of three American adm inistrators in Moscow to supervise all student programs. This will be the PDS s third exchange visit under the guidance of Mr. Skvir. In previous years he had conducted five tours of the Soviet Union, which often included faculty members. The delegation of students will stay in the homes of various Moscow students and will be hosts to these young people next April. The PDSers will be attending classes in the same school (No. 84) as in previous years. A m em orandum from the US-USSR High School Academic Partnership Program states that teachers and local schools are gaining increased control over the curricula and in setting educational goals. The head of the English D epartm ent of school No. 84, Mrs. E.M. Burova, a woman of remarkable intellect, w arm th and charm, who made many friends among our faculty on her first visit here, will be of great help to the students. Mr. Skvir hopes that the PDS group will also be able to go to St. Petersburg (form erly Leningrad) for a few days. In order to insure that things go sm oothly during the exchange, Mr. Skvir has visited the state departm ent in Washington D.C. to secure visas for the PDS students. Oct. 1991, Vol. XXVII, No. 3 Mr. Skvir stands in fro n t of Moscow School 84 with, from left to right, Irina Liubimova, Larissa Vasilchenko and Elena Burova. EnAct s Efforts Benefit School and C om m unity by Andy Goldenson Participation, sponsorship, and education have been three major parts of the Environmental Action Club this year. While keeping in mind global environmental issues, the club has succeeded in solving several local environmental problems both here at PDS and in the Princeton com m unity. Recently the club organized a project to plant trees in the area. They were planted in places where previous trees had been cut down to build sewer lines. All of the trees which were planted were bought by the club. EnAct also held a tree raffle as a fund raiser at the PDS Panther Party. These trees were donated by nearby nurseries. The patrons included: Frank's Nursery which donated a Sweet Gum, Obal s Garden Market which donated a Carolina Silver Bell, Klockner's Nursery which donated a River Birch, Peterson s Nursery which donated two apple trees, Makrancy Garden Center which donated a Ficus, and A & C Nursery which donated a hem lock and a blue spruce. In addition to planting trees, the club has also recently sponsored a recycled paper co-op. This enabled over 100 families to purchase recycled paper goods such as napkins, toilet paper, facial tissue, and paper towels. All of the products which were sold were made out of actual paper which had been recycled, and not bits of sawdust. A third major project which the Environmental Club has initiated is a shift from paper plates and plastic utensils in the cafeteria to ceram ic plates 1

197 and metal flatware. The tentative switch from disposable plates and utensils was soon made permanent and the Environmental Club succeeded in finding a solution to one m ore environmental problem at PDS. Another action which took place was the writing of approximately 120 letters to the Senate. These letters supported bills protecting old growth forests and protested those opening the Arctic refuges for oil development. The goals of the Club this year have been primarily to educate the faculty and the student body at PDS, and to make actual environmental reforms in the school and the com m unity. In the future, the club plans to have a low energy day when each student will try to find a way to get to school that saves energy, (i.e. car pool with a friend, walk to school, or ride a bike to school instead of taking a car.) Also, the club would like to expand the co-op to a m onthly service. By participating in these projects this past school year and making PDS students aware of environmental issues, the club hopes to establish, stated faculty Ms. Cutler, "PDS as a model for the com m unity." June 1991, Vol. XXVII, No. 2 Students Appear on National TV HiTOPS makes presentation on Growing Up in the Age of Aids by M atthew Hurford What were you watching last Sunday evening (February 2) from 6:30 to 8:00? Were you among the hapless victims of the Home Shopping Club s Groundhog s Day Bonanza Sale? T ha t s unfortunate because ABC was airing a special ninety-m inute live program entitled "G rowing up in the Age of AIDS: a National Town Meeting. The audience, which played an active role in the program, reflected a broad spectrum of opinions and beliefs concerning the AIDS epidemic. Among the participants were several faces familiar to the greater Princeton com m unity: namely, the HiTOPS Teen Council. HiTOPS, which stands for Health Interested Teens' Own Program on Sexuality, is a program "dedicated to prom oting the sexual health of young people." The Princeton based organization is com prised of twelve area seniors: seven from Princeton High School and five from PDS. The Students were asked to be on the Town M eeting" following their January 25 appearance on WABC s TV show "M aking It." It was an amazing experience, says HiTOPS m em ber Rebecca Hart XII. "Teens are the ones who should be talking to teens about AIDS and the Town Meeting gave us a chance to do just th a t. Rebecca was joined by classmates Tricia Frank, Suzanne Dolan, M att Hurford, and Dave Wise. At one point in the program M att and Dave p e rfo rm e d a skit in w hich a c o n cerned father (M att) dem onstrates the proper way to use a condom to his teen-aged son (Dave). The skit, which marked a network first, was intended not only to teach people about condom s but also to stress the im portance of com m unication. "People have to learn how to talk to each o th e r," insists Dave. "H ow can we expect to com bat this problem if we can t even discuss it?" Mrs. Wise and Mrs. Hurford, m others of Dave and Matt, also made im portant com m ents during the show. On January 27, six HiTOPS m em bers had lunch with the host of the Town Meeting, Peter Jennings. The purpose of the meeting was to plan the teen role in the prime tim e show. HiTOPS team ed up with another peer sexuality education group from Manhattan's Mt. Sinai Hospital, in an a tte m p t to convince the ABC anchor that teenagers are ready, willing and able to educate their peers about subjects like AIDS. The end result was a redesigned program schedule with a stronger emphasis on peer education. Although the bulk of the airtime was dedicated to other guests such as the Surgeon General of the United State, Dr. Novello, several HiTOPS m em bers had a chance to express their opinions about various AIDS related issues. The audience, six million strong, was slightly larger than the thirty person workshops th a t HiTOPS m em bers w ere accustom ed to addressing. "We tried our best to ignore the fact that millions of people were watching us, said Dave. Although grateful for their national exposure, the HiTOPS m em bers shared the hope that more will be done. In my opinion, as a m em ber of HiTOPS, it would be truly naive to think that a crisis of this magnitude could be solved by ninety minutes of television. Feb. 1991, Vol. XXVII, No. 6

The Faculty: Thanks fo r your continual support and praise, no m atter how many mistakes you d idn 't see. Development people: Mr. Bogle, Mrs. Noonan, Ms. Stefanelli, Ms. Wiley, you knew what we went through to put the Spokesman out and were always there to help. Thanks fo r taking us to NY, fo r telling us the office looked fine, fo r letting us on the Mac, fo r innocently m urdering college admissions people. Andy: Despite your cynicism, the paper w ent out. Thanks fo r thinking up the w orst possible things to put in. Ravi: Wow. Thanks fo r cautiously leaning over my shoulder, telling me (very politely) when I screwed up. For breaking out into spontaneous dance, and fo r being even m ore of a perfectionist than me. Jim : Thanks fo r everything taking such good care of your page, always being concerned with our feelings, and pushing me to turn out twelve page issues. Josh: Sometimes they thought you take your power too seriously. You do, but I have more. You put up with a lot and always stood tall. Dead-line! Thanks. Stace: Thanks fo r really caring about what everyone's reading (som ething we kinda forget about from tim e to tim e). You and the others will certainly im prove the paper even more next year. Think of the tim e you ll save not having to w orry about my lip. Adrienne: Yes, you shared Andy's cynicism, but we never took you seriously. I'm sorry. Thanks fo r letting me run out of gas, and not com plaining when I cut you off. And fo r keeping PAP from stealing our pizza. You re such a bozo. Sorry. Dave: Thanks fo r running one of the best sports pages in Spokesman history. Maybe next year they'll add th a t ninth page. Brian: Thanks fo r all the w riting and your help w ith layout. I know deep down inside you love it. Dan: Thanks fo r always asking what to do, acting shocked when there was actually something, and then doing it. And fo r always showing us how much better we are than other school papers. Thanks. Kev: Our m ost crucial staff m em ber and punching bag pal. Thanks fo r doing EVERYTPIING. And fo r sharing my who will notice?" policy. You ll always be photo god. Jame: One day we'll reach perfection. I promise. Thanks fo r taking a lot and telling me. Kate: Keep dreaming. Just you wait. Things one learns from being a part of Spokesman: never buy eggrolls (never leave them in closets), always m ore than tw o people on mailing, never move a page, d o n 't w orry about hierarchy, never let Josh w rite the Did You Know?, Brian not Brain, always recycle, d on't tell anyone anything, if you re an editor you can turn your article in late, look out fo r deer, read through the e d ito r s notebooks to find out what he's really thinking, NEVER crum ple a things to do list, never say can t touch th is (sorry), never use #5, always buy Root Beer, don t lose the guidebook supplement, always get a receipt. Remember the little hockey cartoon, the BK crown, our Spokesjokes, the E nglish/m etric button, oscar, the Spokescopter, the Spokesrolls... I know you'll do well next year thanks to everyone who helped make the Spokesman you know who you are. It's been te rrific. Your editor, Adam
