Clark III Chief Scientist, Space Exploration Systems of Lockheed Martin Astronautics Are We Ready? What are the technological and operational barriers to sending astronauts to Mars, and how can we overcome them? Sending humans to Mars is a two to three orders of magnitude greater undertaking than sending robotic missions, by all reasonable measures of technology, mass and cost. Yet, with clever and efficient design, the costs of Mars missions have been reduced drastically over the past two decades. Compared to robotic spacecraft, human missions require closed-loop life support systems; large-volumetric, pressurized living accommodations; more elaborate fail-safe mission success subsystems; human health maintenance capabilities; radiation shelters; and a new class of Earth-to-orbit launch vehicles. 4 Dr. Benton C. Clark (continued from page 1) Dr. Clark received his PhD in Biophysics from Columbia University in 1968, with previous degrees from University of California and University of Oklahoma. He currently leads the Advanced Planetary Studies group at LMA, developing concepts for future missions in planetary exploration. Dr. Clark played a key role in development of the Stardust mission concept and is a co-investigator for that mission, as well as a Co-I on the Genesis, CONTOUR and Huygen s Probe missions. While in the U.S. Air Force, he worked on development of space radiation instrumentation for two Gemini missions and six unmanned satellites. He was responsible for conceiving and developing the x-ray fluorescence spectrometers for analysis of Martian soil samples that flew onboard the Viking Mars landers in He was also a co-investigator on the Particle Impact Analyzer (PIA) experiment flown successfully on the European Space Agency's Giotto mission to Halley's Comet in 1987, and discovered organic particulates (CHON particles) among the more preponderant cosmic grains. For four years, he chaired the External Advisory committee for the NASA Exobiology center at UCSD and the the Salk Institute. He has served on three National Academy of Sciences NRC Task Groups on planetary protection and robotic / human missions to Mars, and as member of numerous advisory committees on Mars exploration. 5 From the Archives of the AIAA Albuquerque Section In commemoration of the approaching 100th anniversary of flight, AIAA launched the Evolution of Flight, a campaign to recognize the passionate men and women who have challenged history and defined aerospace achievement who are shaping the future while improving life on Earth. Through the campaign, AIAA and its partners, will celebrate the legacy of flight, encourage new talent, and lay the groundwork for the next 100 years of innovation in aviation and space technology. NUCLEAR TIMES FEBRUARY 13, 1959 In conjunction with the Evolution of Flight campaign, the Albuquerque Section will be reprinting memorabilia from our archives. The fledgling Albuquerque Section of the IAS (Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences, predecessor to AIAA) held its first ever section meeting on Feb. 17, 1959, entitled Looking Toward Space Horizons with speaker Col. Paul Dane of the Air Force Academy. A meeting announcement was published in The Nuclear Times, a publication of Kirtland AFB. Page 5

6 The Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies is holding their Space Technology and Applications International Forum (STAIF) on 2 6 Feb 03 in Albuquerque. STAIF is a major international technical forum hosting five concurrent conferences. This forum promotes international participation and provides for a timely exchange of information among technologists, academicians, industrialists, and program managers on technical and programmatic issues related to inexpensive access to space and space commercialization, exploration, and the potential for performing scientific research and developing new technologies. STAIF is highly attended by high- level representatives from commercial industry, government agencies, and institutes of higher education, both nationally and internatio n- ally and co-sponsored by several professional engineering societies. 7 Chairman s Contrail, Mark Torres We re really moving now! One of the great things about AIAA is that it has the ability to bring together some fantastic speakers and programs for its members. Behind the AIAA name are the people who make it happen, and this year, Peter Dunn (our past chairman and current Programs officer) has gotten us off to a great start. In September, we had a tour of the F-16 Tacos Air National Guard squadron, which received rave reviews from those who attended. We missed seeing the Tacos last year because of the terrorist attacks, but the wait was well worth it. Thanks to everyone who organized and ran this event. Aviation, this young modern giant, exemplifies the possible relationships of women with the creations of science. Amelia Earhart, 1935 In October, we will hear from Distinguished Lecturer Benton Clark (Chief Scientist, Flight Systems, Lockheed Martin Astronautics) about Human Missions to the Red Planet. This meeting will be remarkable not only because of the lecturer and topic, but also because we are joining with UNM students and the Society of Women Engineers, and we will have representatives from AIAA s western offices to speak with you about AIAA programs, and to hear your views on how AIAA and the Albuquerque section are doing.
