Day 1 After so many challenging lessons we had throughout the year, we, a small group of 5 th and 6 th graders from our school, guided by our English teacher, chose a special destination on the map of Europe: Great Britain and London, in particular. We have already learnt interesting facts about this country s culture and traditions and we were curious to discover its landscapes, tourist sights, people and entertainment. We were on our first day of holiday and we really wanted to have fun. Our parents offered us this opportunity to travel since we all had very good results at school. So here we are ready to travel by coach, crossing 6 countries to get to our final destination, London. Dreams, ambitions, hopes, go ahead. We start our voyage On the morning on 21 st June we waved goodbye to our parents, placed our luggage and discovered new friends from Bistrita Nasaud who were travelling with us and Cristina, a very nice 17 old year-girl from Alexandria, who has just won an essay national competition. After we had passed by several monuments in Transylvania a 15 th century wooden church in Huedin, Oct.Goga s famous memorial monument in Ciucea, Oradea s biggest gothic cathedral - we got very excited to the border of the country. In Hungary our first stop was in Budapest, where we stayed at a beautiful hotel overnight. The sun was shining mildly when we arrived in the afternoon. We saw the impressive Houses of the Parliament, reflected in the friendly waters of the Danube, crossed by so many bridges. We admired the whole panorama of the city from the height of the Gellert Hegy, where we took some photos. We walked through the Heroes Square reminding us of the great leaders and heroes of the Hungarian People, a group of statues arranged in 2 semi-circles. At the hotel we played the Marshmallow Game. Our best friend proved to be our guide, an English teacher from Tg.Mures, called Huba, who explained us everything patiently and organized the trip.

Day 2 Dear Diary, We spent our night at hotel Ventura in Budapest, where we had breakfast early in the morning omelette, milk, cereal and bread. We continued our journey by coach to England, through Hungary. On top of a hill we saw a giant bird made of metal. Next we saw the famous Hungarian windmills in the fields. On the left side of the road there was the oldest monastery created by Stephan the Saint built in the 11 th century. In the coach we played Black Stories. For lunch we stopped in Austria, at a Landzeit restaurant. We liked the food and we were very glad that we could eat cooked food. The girl who served us was dressed in traditional Austrian costume. In this country we stopped to visit the most beautiful town built in gothic style Scharding, situated on the Inn River. We walked down the river on a sunny day and admired the scenery. We saw the Tower House called Rathaus in the centre of the town. The church we visited was called Sankt Georg and had beautiful, colourful icons and an enormous organ.
Day 3 Dear Diary, We woke up after a long and tiring night spent in the coach, dizzy, but still joyful. We continued our adventure by reaching England through the 50.5 km long undersea level Eurotunnel. We felt kind of weird and mostly disappointed about our new experience (it was too short and boring) since it didnt t reach our huge expectations. However, when I found out that the tunnel is considered one of today s 7 wonders of the world, it became more interesting. When we finally got out and I saw England for the first time, I felt amazed by its beauty and out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere. The first place we discovered was Rochester, a little town that impresses you by its simplicity and welcoming atmosphere. We visited Dickens World, a documentary centre created in the writer s honour. In this place we had a lot of fun as we discovered the Victorian period when Charles Dickens became a famous writer. Throughout our journey our guide entertained, excited and educated us. We learned how all kind of people, regardless their wealth and education lived in that age. I personally felt cozy because I got to act out a short passage from one of Charles Dickens books, that made me feel fantastic. We walked curiously along the streets of the enchanted town and I was amazed that all the people were friendly to us, without knowing us. When we finally got to our mobile homes in the Allhallows International Park, on the estuary of the Thames we were impressed by their tidiness and design. This was to become our home for the next 5 days. We are looking forward to what the next day is planning for us! Maria 4

Day 4 Dear Diary, This was the first day to discover London. We were all very excited. I appreciated that the guide told us a lot of info about London the fact that they speak about 300 languages, that they are different nationalities European, Asian, African. I saw the doubledeckers crossing the bridges. The first place on the visiting list was The impressive Houses of Parliament, situated in Winchester.I was impressed by its neo-gothic architecture. We walked very close to Westminster Abbey where we found some interesting facts from our guide. Everything was impressive, monumental. After that we headed to the Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the guards. The streets were full of people, you could hear music everywhere. The next stop was at St.James Park, a big green place in the heart of London, where hundreds of people spend their free time and relax. We could taste a delicious ice-cream lying in the grass and feeding the pigeons with our sandwiches. Then we went to the Piccaddilly Circus, the busiest crossroad in London, where many Londoners and tourists meet. We admired the huge column with Anteros. We also went to Covent Garden, where we bought souvenirs from many shops and markets. At the National Gallery, situated in Trafalgar Square, we could admire a lot of impressive and famous paintings from all over the world. The sight I will never forget was the London Eye. From the capsule for 45 minutes we could see the whole panorama of the City of London. We got higher and higher and we could see all the important buildings and streets and people and parks. The sun was shining and we were exhausted from the long walks, but happy. Carla 6

Day 5 Dear Diary, Today, Wednesday, was fabulous. We woke up early because we had a busy day. Let me tell you what our mobile homes look like. It looks like a big caravan with five rooms. In one of the mobile homes stays our group: Ana, Carla, teacher Lucy, Nicolaida, Maria and Cristina, while in the other one my dad (Nicu), Ana-Maria (another English teacher), Ilinca and me. Every evening we play a game called Riddle Hunt. The teachers hide English riddles in the living room and we have to find and answer them. The winner is the group which guesses more riddles. I like this game and I like living in the mobile home because it is fun and cosy. In the morning we visited the British Museum, a wonderful museum, where we saw many mummies, ancient necklaces, rings and bracelets, letters written with hieroglyph, Chinese, Japanese writing. Most of all I admired the Rosetta Stone. It is a special stone written in three languages: Greek, Egyptian and Demotic. It is important because it helped the scientists to decipher the ancient hieroglyph scripts. Secondly we walked along the Oxford Street, a real paradise for shopping. I bought a pencil case from a Chinese shop. We visited Primark, a huge shop where I bought two shirts, a pair of shorts and a cool bag. We also entered different famous shops like Zara, Bershka, but I couldn t buy anything as it was too expensive. After that we went to Madame Tussaud s Wax Museum. Here I could see a lot of amazing wax models of famous people. I remember some of them I liked most: Kate Winslet, Bob Marley, Leonardo di Caprio, Julia Roberts, Rihanna, Adelle, Angelina Jolie, Katy Perry, Madonna, Jack Sparrow, Vlad Tepes and Britney Spears. All of them looked like real people. Later we entered a horror tunnel but I wasn t scared at all, I laughed all the time. Then we drove a smaller car that followed a track through The Spirit Ziua 5 Ziua de astăzi, miercuri, a fost fabuloasă.

It was delicious! Then we played Riddle Hunt, we didn t win but it was funny, we won more experience. It was a nice day! Mara 9

Day 6 Dear Diary, Today, on Thursday, we woke up at 7 o clock as usual and we had a tasty breakfast. Our mobile home s key was misplaced, so today we are going to have a key hunt. After a short trip along the Thames and Essex river we arrived in Cambridge, situated on the river Cam. Cambridge is a famous university centre, like Oxford (they are in rivalty). The town has a population of about 120,000 people, 31 colleges and 251 schools. 40 % of the population has a college degree. Cambridge University has 10,000 students and it was funded in 1209 with the help of the teachers in Paris. We also visited the King s College, one of the most famous ones, and admired the Sacred Tomb. We had a wonderful time visiting those monuments. We discovered a popular activity in that town, called punting, that is rowing down the river and the guide explaining facts about the monuments while passing by them. To our surprise, the punter of our boat was Romanian, from Tarnaveni. He offered guidance and presented us the universities along the river Cam. There were impressive buildings surrounded by an incredible green of the lawns. After that we chatted with him and we found out that his name was Andrei and he was proud to have graduated Trinity College in this town. His family lived in Oradea. His British was perfect, we could understand almost everything. Back on the coach we had some entertainment. Mara sang in a fabulous way on the microphone her song Every time we touch everybody applauded her. There was another girl from Bistrita who had a good voice. In the end of the day we went to an Asda supermarket to buy food for the mobile home and when we arrived home we had a delicious dinner and then we played a quiz about London and sang traditional English songs. All in all, we had a pleasant day today but now I m tired and I m going to sleep. Goodnight, diary. 40 % din populaţie are studii universitare. Mara a cântat nemaipomenit cântecul ei preferat Every time we touch, toată lumea a aplaudat-o. Ilinca 11

Day 7 Dear Diary, This was another day in London, more exactly the last one. We woke up very early in the morning, at 5 a.m. We were stressed because our mobile home was a mess (but finally we cleaned everything up) and he had to pack up for our departure back home. Firstly, we visited Greenwich Park. I enjoyed the greenish field/lawn and I imagined myself living in a world with beautiful landscapes. From up the hill we could have the view of the whole city of London, which took my breath away. From there we took the train (underground) to Bank, the final destination, to visit Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. It was rebuilt 3 times, the last building we see now was built in 1997 and keeps the structure of the original theatre. It has no roof as in Shakespeare s time there was no electrical power for the lights. The most expensive seats were right on the stage, so that the audience could see their rich outfit. The cheapest seats were on the ground level. A nice and funny actress was our guide, who explained everything about the theatre and the art of acting. Using a funny game we acted in groups scenes from the drama Romeo and Juliet. It was interesting, energetic and spontaneous and we learned how to express our feelings in an interactive way. I can t tell you much about the Tower Bridge as I felt a pain on the left side of my stomach. The Tower was amazing. We surrounded it and we admired the 3-walled emblematic fortress, which was visited by many foreign tourists. Then we took a break to have some fish and chips, the English traditional food. It was very hot so we also enjoyed a delicious ice-cream while sitting on some large stone benches. 13
In the end, we took the train back to Greenwich to visit the National Maritime Museum. We took photos and we were curious to see Admiral Nelson s jacket with the hole where he was shot during the Spanish War, and special sea battle equipment. We bought souvenirs for our family. It was nice but it was not my cup of tea! Then we picked up our plenty of luggage from the camp to travel back home and to cross the English Channel. Nicolaida 14

Day 8 Dear Diary, I am not a romantic, but in the evenings I used to stroll along the seaside, seeing the estuary of the Thames from our camp. I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, looking for pebbles and seashells along the coast. In the morning, it was low tide, the waters were far behind in the sea, all you could see was wet, damp land, which in the evenings was covered as usual by water. The incredible thing about the weather was that every single day of our trip was sunny, sometimes windy. No rains, no bad weather, lucky for us! We started our voyage back to Europe and Romania, our home. After we crossed the English Channel, we travelled back through Belgium, Germany, Austria and Hungary. We spent a difficult night sleeping in the coach. After some short stops at gas stations we had a beautiful, incredible sight: that of the Cathedral of Melk, in Austria. It is a magnificent Benedictine settlement, built between , one of the most famous sights in Europe, being included in the cultural UNESCO heritage. Outside the abbey you can see a huge gate with the statues of Saint Stephan and Saint Paul. The abbey was decorated in a baroques style and inside it there are decorations with hundreds of kilograms of gold. Sadly, our Romanian guide couldn t explain anything in the courtyard, since they had their own guide. We walked along the alleys of the abbey and stepped inside the huge cathedral where we could admire the statues, icons and decorations and we could listen to wonderful religious music during a wedding ceremonial. After visiting this place (it was sunny, too), we continued our way back to Romania through Hungary, where we stayed at another hotel called Hunor. The greatest fact about this trip is that I made some friends from Bistrita. I had a lot of fun with them, but sadly tomorrow we are going to leave one another. The most amazing place we ve been together was in Cambridge, where we walked through the town and had a lot of fun. 16
Another important fact that happened during the trip was that on the last day the guide organized a quiz about all the places we have visited so far. Many children in the coach were rewarded for their good results. Can you guess who came first? Me. I got a mug with the symbol of the Studentlines who organized the trip. I would like to thank everybody who organized the trip and made us feel safe and cosy. 18 My new and old friends in England 18
Day 9 Dear Diary, In this last part I ll just tell you my overall impression about this great trip I ve been so lucky to take part in. As you see, I ll never have enough words to describe he feelings I experienced while discovering the great beauties of London mainly, but also of Rochester, Cambridge and Budapest. Firstly, I ll write something about Budapest, the first city we visited. I have to admit that the place was beyond my expectations. I didn t imagine it is so impressive, so full of genuine history. Another place that impressed me was Scharding. This little town cooled us down with its peaceful atmosphere and enriched our general knowledge. Now let s get straight to the topic, describing my impressions about Great Britain. At Rochester we discovered Charles Dickens birthplace. At Dickens World Centre we were taken by the guide into a challenging journey through the Victorian Age, in the 19 th century. There we had the chance to fully understand the way people lived and how hard it was for Dickens to become the world-wide known writer he is today. The following day was spent in that fabulous city I ve always dreamt of visiting, London. Since morning deep feelings of joy and excitement engulfed me and I knew that it would be the perfect day, one of the best ones in my life. So many places, each one with its own history. Even if we have read or studied about them at school, there is nothing greater than seeing them through our own eyes. The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, in short, the English symbols, all seemed so impressive, elegant and special in their style and design that I was left speechless. I felt so tiny and unimportant in front of these emblematic monuments, just like any other human being that comes there to wonder (to be honest, that is what I really was, but I like to believe that my feelings are personal and unique).
An important place I would like to mention is the British Museum, with its precious collections of mummies, Roman and Greek sculptures and antique remains. I m not really keen on history, however it impressed me a lot. The visit to Shakespeare s Globe Theatre offered us the most interactive lesson and history and mostly drama. It was, to me, the perfect way to understand Shakespeare s works and intelligence, all this with our friendly guide s help. Cambridge was a desired break after tiring days spent in London, by visiting so many places. I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of the university centre, I enjoyed the walks along the cobbled streets with my new friends, while admiring the beauty of the most famous colleges in the world. Even if there are many other attractions which are worth writing about I think it s time to end. The memories about London will always remain in my mind and heart. People s kindness, the special atmosphere and the magnificent places make me want so much to be part of their community. Who knows, maybe one day my dream will come true! Cristina With my friends in England, visiting fabulous places 20
