5 Why focus on science education? The Science WoRx program brought scientists into the classroom that helped our kids who were doing research, and it was amazing. Ruth Gleicher, Science Teacher at Niles West on ABC 7, WLS Chicago 4th and 8th grade students in Illinois achieved only average scores (148 and 148 points out of 300, respectively) on the science section of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Only about 30 percent of students in each grade had proficient or advanced knowledge of the subject. WOW! I am completely and utterly excited for this! I am in a high school and would love to use demos and a program of this sort in my school! Judy Jones, Biology Teacher, St. Francis de Sales in Chicago, Ill. Experts indicate that even though American teens are embracing the subjects of STEM with increasingly positive attitudes, many lack the necessary encouragement from mentors and role models in these fields. 5
