Introduction Today the industrial applications of robots are used mainly in serial production lines. The programming of the robot over Teach-In takes time, are tedious and need of skilled programmers. Different available sensors help to adapt the programs to reality, but this in a very primitive way. Robotic security is an add-on and each installation needs a fence, collision sensors and other security items. A Human-Machine interaction is difficult and risky. With my presentation I want to show the functionality, development and technology we need and develop for the next generation. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 3

Next Generation Industrial Robotics Need of fast programming or instruction of the tasks for the robot Collaborate and work together with humans Interdisciplinary work of Mechanics Electronics Control and Regulation Informatics Biophysics Neurology Psychology among others. This interdisciplinary approach allows us to get the performance of security, cognitive functionality, dexterity and mobility for robotics. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 4

INTRINSICALLY SECURE For a side by side cooperation of humans and robots a safe interaction is a basic requirement in industrial, care and household environment. Analysis of potential human injuries, collision simulation and real crash tests with dummies shows the needed design criteria for secure robots. KUKA LWR - Approaching the First Law of Robotics: Isaac Asimov: First of the three Laws of robotics, The Caves Of Steel, p , 1942 KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 5

KUKA LWR - Light Weight Robot Analysis of collision reaction strategies in nature Neuron-regulation of the human arm, shows the way for secure control algorithm. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 7

FUNCTIONALLITY Teaching and programming methods, that allows a simple use of robots: Program by demonstration (PbD): the positions or trajectories are recorded when the robot is manually guided to the position or along the desired path By 3D path adaptation: The algorithms of the intuitive graphics interface can adapt and parameterize the 3D recorded data to generate a complete process. Sensor guided adaptation with Vision and Laser KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 8

By 3D path adaptation KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 9

Sensor guided adaptation with Vision KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 10

FUNCTIONALLITY A worker is instructed how to carry out a work task. Robots are like unskilled workers and need to be instructed in HOW things a Task-Level instruction is enough, telling only WHAT have to be done. Cognitive control and cognitive capabilities such as PERSEPTION, REASONING, LEARNING and PLANNING KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 11

COGNITIVE FUNCTIONALLITY The most important advantages of this are Learn from experience Adapt to environment Cooperate with humans Improve performance Be aware of own capabilities Respond robustly to surprise The cognitive functionality improves reliability flexibility adaptation performance The human interaction and cooperation with these systems are easy and is a strong support for the user. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 12

Next Generation Care Robotics Care robotics, a very large application field for the next generation. Robots that can assist elderly people will be a need in a society that lives longer. Here the same features for the industrial robotics apply: cognitive functionality and mobility. Voice instruction is here a base requirement. Instruction over a digital control unit is an additional way of instruction and communication. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 14

MORPHA Project KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 15

MOBILITY The actual basic mobility is based on systems with wheels. One system is the KUKA Omnimove program. The Omnimove use a wheel system that allows movements in all directions without a turning radius. KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 16

OMNIMOVE KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 17

CONCLUSION Compare actual classical industrial robotic application with the next generation production assistants. Actual Next generation * Fixed installation * Flexibly to relocate * Periodic, repeatable tasks, * Frequent task changes seldom changes * Online / Offline programmed by a * Online instructed by a process expert robot specialist supported by offline methods * Programming takes hours and days * Programming or instruction takes minutes * Seldom interaction with the worker * Frequent interaction with the worker, only if being programmed even force and guidance assistance * Worker and Robot separate through * Work space sharing with the worker fences * Profitable only with medium to large * Profitable even at small lot sizes lot sizes * Work as programmed * Learn by experience and adapt to environment KUKA Roboter GmbH R32-ASM Erich Lohrmann Page 20

CONCLUSION Today, about 1 Mio industrial robots are in operation worldwide. With the next generation, applications will increase dramatically and we expect to see 3 to 5 Mio robots working in the industrial areas in the next decade. Additional, all the household and care assistant robots that will be available for the value of a midsize car, will change our life. Robotic technology will become our good companion.
