1 The book contains original papers dealing with Membrane Computing and Theoretical Computer Science. The topics include mathematical aspects of P systems, modelling of biological processes, combinatorics of words, grammar systems, tree languages, and randomness. Informal personal reflections conclude the book. The book is dedicated to Gheorghe Păun s 65th birthday. Gheorghe Petre Perez-Jimenez Rozenberg Salomaa (Eds.) Marian Gheorghe Ion Petre Mario J. 3 Preface The present book is dedicated to Gheorghe Păun on the occasion of his 65th birthday in December In this way his collaborators, students and friends wish to express their gratitude and respect to this great scientist. The scientific work of Gheorghe, unique in its depth and diversity, spans over forty decades. Because of his broad views, original ideas and contagious enthusiasm for research, he has acquired unusually numerous collaborators and students all over the world. During our editorial work we could sense their admiration of Gheorghe in the enthusiasm of their response to our request to contribute to this book. The scientific importance and overall influence of Gheorghe s work has been acknowledged by the scientific community in many ways. Many detailed accounts about this can be found in the literature. We refer also to the article of Solomon Marcus in this book. Here we want to make only some brief remarks about Gheorghe s work. Gheorghe s early work dealt with formal languages and traditional theory of computation. Soon the emphasis shifted to molecular and DNA-based computing, models inspired by nature. This lead to membrane computing or P systems (P from Păun), conceived by Gheorghe as computing models abstracted from the compartmentalized cell structure mediated by membranes. The importance of membrane computing is witnessed by the unique expansion of this research area. Membrane computing started as a technical report by Gheorghe, soon followed by a highly referenced journal article. Numerous collaborators and their students joined. The area expanded and diversified. There were conferences and yearly brainstorming events. A handbook concerning membrane computing was published. Research in membrane computing takes place worldwide but especially remarkable is its current growth in China. Beside his scientific life Gheorghe s intellectual interests and activities are broad and numerous. He wrote several novels and is a member of Romanian Writers Association. A very interesting book written by Gheorghe 1994, Changeless Change, a continuation of the famous Orwell book, was translated into English and Hungarian. He wrote many books on games and puzzles, among others an introduction to the game of GO which had several editions (as a matter of fact Gheorghe was the first president of the Romanian GO Federation). He also contributed regular columns on the topic of games to a number of well known magazines. Gheorghe s cultural work, unusual for a scientist, as the founder and editor of the highly respected journal Curtea de la Argeş is brought forward in a special section of this book. For a detailed account of Gheorghe s cultural activities we refer the reader to the article by Andrei Păun and Grzegorz Rozenberg in this book. V
4 Most of the scientific papers in this book are somehow related to Gheorghe s work. Some personal accounts are also included. The editors express their gratitude to the contributors and reviewers. It gives us a particular pleasure to thank Ms Lavinia Spandonide for her creative cooperation on this book and Ms Cristina Stoian for her prompt help throughout the entire editorial process. Most importantly, we wish Gheorghe continuing success in science and cultural activities and happiness in life for the coming years. November 2015 The Editors VI
